Hi,

We just wanted to share this photo of Tucky and Santa with you all. Tucky is still doing great and this picture was just too funny not to send.

Keep up the great work!

Cheers to all at the HSHV!

A huge thanks to everyone at the shelter for taking me in as a stray when nobody else wanted me! At the time, my name was "Mars," and I was a skinny little thing with a really bad cold. A nice lady adopted me and changed my name to "Eliot" because she thought I was much too regal for my original name! Even though I spent the first few days in my new home sleeping in my cat basket, my cold is all better now and I've got tons of energy. In fact, I hardly ever sleep! When I'm not playing with one of my toys, there is lots to see out of all the windows in the house. The bathtub is my favourite place to explore and I simply love drinking the water that is left over from the morning shower. I also love giving the lady who adopted me lots of wet cat kisses and I absolutely hate it when she decides that it's time for us to go to bed at night! So, thanks again to the Humane Society of Huron Valley for making such a great connection between me and my new family

--Eliot Fournier (on behalf of his new mom, Karen)

Season's Greetings

Just a short to let you all know that Taj aka Marcus is adjusting nicely in my home. He is the most affectionate and lovable pet one could ever imagine. He greets me warmly every evening when I arrival. He's well-trained and mannerly. He's also very social, almost unbelievable.

I am so happy to have gotten him in time for the holidays.  I am attaching a picture of him taken after eating a bountiful Thanksgiving dinner.

Hi there!

I adopted Carter back in September and since then he has been my best friend and my joy! He has a wonderful personality and great heart. He loves to play and he gives hugs.

He is great with other people and on car rides. Here is a picture of him sleeping!

Thank you,

Danielle

We adopted “Caboodle” on October 16 and changed his name to Gus.

He thinks he’s a Great Dane when it comes to playing with our other two cats—no fear.  We’ve taught him to fetch and return the toy for another throw-acts like a dog.

Love him to pieces.

Dear HSHV:

We adopted Lilly last winter (February or March). Or perhaps she adopted us. My first memory of her was seeing her and my daughter rubbing noses in the cat room. My daughter had been looking for a cat or kitten to replace her beloved cat Isabel who had died a year ago.  Apparently she walked into the cat room and Lilly took to her immediately. It was love at first sight for both of them.

Since we brought her home, Lilly has been a delightful addition to our household of two other older cats, a geriatric dog, and a noisy parrot (plus three people). At a little over a year old now, she retains a lot of kittenish playfulness and curiosity. When caught being "naughty" (jumping on the kitchen table, elevating herself to the highest available spot, knocking off small objects to test gravity, etc.), Lilly invariably distracts us with her spotted tummy, her loud purr, her beatific gazes, and her loving rubs. Of course, we have to forgive her immediately.

She is very involved in the household and comes running to investigate any noise, and greets us every morning as soon as she hears us moving around. She is particularly attached to my daughter, and frequently sits on her shoulder while Hannah is working at the computer. She even gets along well with the other animals, especially our middle cat, Zeke. They have loud romps together, leaping and rolling and stalking and pouncing. She persists in her belief that someday we will forget to lock the parrot's cage.

We cannot imagine life without Lilly, and have always been grateful to the family who owned her before and helped her become such a loving little cat before they had to give her up.

Hi:

My name is LaFayette and I was adopted by Randi and Alex the first weekend in October of 2008.  They were so excited to have me as their first kitty.  And... I have to say that I was pretty excited too.  I love to look at the snow falling outside from the window ledge, play with my many toys that family and friends have bought me, curl up and take naps on my very own University of Michigan blanket, and get into all sorts of trouble.

My family says they are very lucky to have me as a family member and that I am the perfect kitty for them! Thanks to the Huron Valley Humane Society.... we have become a lovely, little family : )

Hi,

My fiancee and I have recently adopted a cat named Angelina (now Sasha). This was our first big responsibility with regards to another living animal. During the school year it gets very lonely where we live so we decided that a cat companion could cheer us up, and so she did. We bought Sasha a bunch of toys and set up here own resting/playing campground which has now become the entire apartment.

Sasha has made our lives a lot more brighter and entertaining. From her favorite gate of tug-of-war, to chasing fake, furry mouse around the house, to throwing her toys in the air and catching them before they fall, Sasha is an amazing watch. Though not used to being held in arms, Sasha loves to occasionally start a friendly fight with one of us, and then roll on her back and try to push away our hands as we wrestle on the floor. Here favorite time of the day is the morning, during which she jumps on our bed and calmly wakes us up with her purs and rubbing, telling us "ITS SNACK TIME".

Thank you Humane Society of Huron Valley!

Hi!

My wife, Lynn, and I adopted Heidi on April 5, 2008, and we are happy to say that she is adjusting well to our home.  She has also successfully completed her Beginning and Intermediate training classes!  She is a loving dog, loyal to both of us.  She is very social in public, and is great with kids.  Her best friend is her "cousin" Sassy, who is also a rescue dog in Lynn's sister's family.  Though Sassy is a shepherd-border collie mix, and is much larger than Heidi, they are equals in play.  We can't imagine our home without the spirit that Heidi brings to it!  We encourage all readers to take a look at a shelter dog and take it in.  You won't regret it when you see the good you do for your new pet!

Hi:

We adopted Atlas, now known as Stoli, in early August and we absolutely adore him! He is the BEST dog ever! You take chances when you adopt a dog, not knowing whether they were trained, abused, or how they would interact with other people and dogs is just a few, as I am sure everyone knows. But we got so lucky!

The first day I saw Stoli I knew I had to have him. My boyfriend and I had been coming every Saturday for 3 months waiting to find the one dog we had to have and when I saw him I knew! We decided we would think about it for a week, since he wasn't available for adoption until later that same week anyway, and if we went back and he was still there we would scoop him up! Fortunately he was!

His first week home we learned that he was indeed house trained, he took to crate training well! He knew a few commands and is a very good listener. He loves sleeping on his fluffy, going to the dog park, watching out the window and laying in bed! Everyone we know cant get enough of him either, they have a nick name for him, bat-dog, because when he looks at you his ears flop back, straight up, its so cute. The chance we took definitely melted our hearts to this little dog!

Thank you so Much for all your efforts and help!

My husband and I adopted Kenny (now Ernie) in August 2008, as we wanted our boxer Millie to have a friend to play with. Ernie gets along great with Millie and is such a happy, fun-loving dog. He loves playing tug-of-war and running around the backyard with his big sis Millie.

He is a real joy and we are so lucky to have him.

We would recommend the Humane Society of Huron Valley to anyone who is looking to give an animal a loving home.

Best of Luck,

Jade & Mike Lange.

To whom it may concern:

A special thanks to everyone at the Humane Society of Huron Valley!!!

Just a few days ago I adopted a dog from your shelter and I must say that I have truly never been happier. My dog Cairo (Meg) is nothing short of the best dog I could have ever imagined owning. She has quickly become a loving member of my family and has filled a special place in all of our hearts. I was surprised at how well behaved she was and continues to be. She is three years old and came to my home already house broken and has picked up to commands fast. Although we have to work on some nipping, she is absolutely a wonderful dog. While I know that there is sometimes a strong urge to get designer or pure breed dogs, I also know that no dog could possibly replace my amazing mutt. She is everything that I have always wanted in a canine and more. It also helps to know that I helped a dog in need, and instead of buying from a pet store I chose to adopt.

I just want to say thank you again for all your help and information when it came to making this important decision in both me and my family’s life. I will be sending pictures very soon.

Love,

Cassandra Wagner

Hi:

We recently adopted two dogs from the Humane Society Huron Valley.  We went in with an intention to adopt a small female dog.  We saw "Cookie" in the cage as a stray and had to wait for the waiting period to end before she was available for adoption.  But when I looked over to the cage two doors down I saw "Coco" a small male dog.  He just gave me a look that went right to my heart.  The two of them just looked like they belonged together. Coco is a five year old Lhasa Apso mix and Cookie (who didn't have a name when we got her) is less than one year old and a poodle mix.  We ended up adopting both of them and they are the best of friends!  They keep each other company, play tug-of-war and run around the back yard chasing each other.   Here they are after a tough day playing tug-of-war.  In the front/right is Coco and farther back on the left is Cookie.   They are a constant source of laughter in our house!

Hi HSHV:

Shortly after my wife's birthday we adopted three cats. The two siblings Daria and Dusty were a little freaked out by the move from foster care, but Fido (formerly Yogi) was ready to explore! We introduced them to a small part of our house first, and as they got comfortable with their surroundings we gave them access to more of the house.

They are doing well.

Thanks,

Thomas

We adopted Buddy (formerly Allister) on August 9, 2008.  Initially, we went to the Humane Society to look at the animals, not intending to get a pet.  The minute we saw Buddy, we knew we had to have him!  The staff at HSV was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable and it made the process only that much better.

We couldn't be happier with Buddy and he has been a wonderful addition to our family!

Thank you!

Hello,

My girlfriend and I, well.......... my girlfriend, wanted a new puppy SOOOOOO BADLY back in March. She visited your humane society and that is where she found our Ivy. I wasn't nearly as excited as she was about getting another pet, but I am so glad that she doesnt listen to me at all when she wants something. There honestly aren't words to explain how much I love our little Ivy (Who Who). She is so sweet and sooooo loving. It is beyond me how anyone would ever be able to let her go after having her for a year and a half, but they did and I got my beautiful baby girl out of it. Her Mommy likes to dress her up in clothes for the holidays and Me and Ivy watch our Lions and Pistons together all of the time. She absolutely loves hes 2 sisters (Kali and Twinky) and plays with them all of the time. Everyone who meets her just cant believe how cute and smart she is. She knows how to roll over, shake, play dead, speak and sit. We are gonna start learning more tricks soon. I won't ramble on and on about her, because trust me, I could type for days. I just wanted to thank you for the great addition and blessing you have brought to our lives in Ivy. We couldnt imagine a day without her!! Keep up the good work, You guys are GREAT!!!

Sincerely,

Ronnie, Lindsay, Kali,Twinky & IVY!!!!

I adopted a sweet Irish Setter from HSHV in May 08 that was named Roja. When I first saw her I immediately fell in love with her. I was not even looking for a new dog at the time, I already had a dog and a cat I adopted from you at home. I use to just drop by occasionally to give the dogs and cats encouragement. When I saw her sweet little face I knew I had to adopt her. She was a stray and frightfully skinny but still sweet and beautiful and I couldn't imagine how her owners could not be looking for her. It has been six months since she has been part of my family and she is thriving. She is still learning her manners and learning to live peacefully in our home with our cat Bella, and I can't believe how far she has come. The woman who interviewed me and helped introduce Bailey to my other Dog Lola was very fond of her and asked that I forward a picture once we got settled. She told me she had a special place in heart for Irish Setters because of a childhood book she read. I am forwarding a picture or my dog Lola, a golden mix adopted 2 years ago and Bailey, formally Roja.

Thanks for all you do!!

Dear HSHV,

I have attached a picutre of my best friend.  Yes, I am also the mom of  Jazz who's picture I sent previously.  Dalton came to the shelter in 2000.  He is so close to me I can hardly move from one room to the next without him wanting to be near me.  We go everywhere together.  He was surrended to HSHV as a 6 week old pup.  His previous parents could not house-break him.  The first time I laid eyes on him, he was nestled in a HSHV ball cap.   I fell in love.  I was asked to hold my supervisor's cap for a minute, and low and behold  to my surprise, there was a wee, tiny, babe of a pup curled inside the cap.  Of course my heart was immediately taken.  Dalton is now 9 years old.  And the best doxie in the whole wide world.  I will  forever be dedicated to the work of all the employees at HSHV.  It is the most rewarding, yet painful work that is necessary to the well bieong of all animals.  I will forever promote HSHV.  I know, I have been through this..  I will always hold a part of my heart for all the folks involved with HSHV.  You are all a special. "breed".

Thank you HSHV, for allowing me to care for and be a part of Dalton's life, he is such a terrific friend.

Hello,

I saw Buckley the Cat on Petfinder.com in late September, and I knew he was for me.  I went to Petsmart, where he was living, and it was truly love at first sight.  His emerald eyes and cute, tiger face are irrestible!   My parents adopted a one-eyed Tuxedo cat from the Humane Society when I was in college, and I named him after my favorite President, Harry Truman.  Truman the cat is a part of my family (and a total gentleman snuggle-bunny, by the way), so when I bought a house of my own, I decided to get a cat of my own from the Humane Society.   Long story short, I adopted Buckley and renamed him Dewey, after Thomas Dewey, who ran against Harry Truman back in the day.  I can't tell you how much happiness and laughter Dewey has brought into my life.  He's utterly silly, snuggly and affectionate.  As soon as I took him out of his carrier at his new home, Dewey ran into my bedroom and emerged from under my bed with a sock in his mouth.  He looked at me, as if to say, "Look!  I found a sock!  Cool!"  I went out to my car to get some toys I bought him, and when I came in, he was sitting on top of the refrigerator, sleeping.  He's preposterously silly, and has soooooo much personality.

I encourage everyone to stop by the Humane Society to find their new family member.  Dewey is a permanent fixture of my lap, he's extremely chatty and he jumps on me like a monkey as soon as I walk in the door each afternoon.  I want everyone to know that kittens might be cute, but older cats have personality and deserve a loving family, too!  It's worth the time to consider older pets as new family members.    Attached is a pic of Dewey sitting in his toy box, which he emptied out and decided to take a nap in.   Thank you for helping me find Dewey.  We are profoundly happy together.   I wake up each morning with him wedged between my neck and pillow.  :-)

I love him!

Meghan

Hello Everyone at HSHV:

Sorry it has taken me so long to write , we adopted Smokey back in May I believe and I just wanted to tell you what a great dog he is. Smokey has been groomed and all those mats are gone and he just looks beautiful. He is now spoiled rotten and when we go shopping he checks the trunk to make sure we got him something too.Every afternoon the goes to Allen elementry school where he is greeted by over 400 screaming kids wanting to rub his belly, and he just loves it.He spends his time during the day keeping my blind grandmother company they really love eachother  and because she is blind he gets all the food she spills on the floor. Needless to say he fallows her everywhere:) Smokey is a great dog and we are so greatfull to have him, sorry I do not have a picture, but please no that he is loved .

My brother and I adopted Jack and Joey (now Jacky and Buddy) on October 6. We are so happy with them, and thankful to everyone at the Huron Valley Humane Society who made the adoption an enjoyable experience. A HUGE thank you to Debbie Phillips for being a fantastic foster mother...these babies are very loving, friendly and sociable.
We would recommend that EVERYONE who's looking for a new 4-legged family member, first check out their closest Humane Society, they can't go wrong.

Sincerely,
Kathy and Bob Jenkins

Hello Huron Valley,

I adopted Lola (then Posey) in June. We've since moved to the Boston area, but Lola and I are doing wonderfully.  I have attached two photos of her from a recent camping trip.

Thank you,

Adam

Fred and Ben (formerly known as Eleven) have added much laughter and enjoyment to our home! Here they are curled up in our senior Bichon, Artie's favorite spot, his bed.

Thank you for your tireless humane efforts to rescue, care for and offer these wonderful pets up for adoption! You do a marvelous job there, and we will be back again and again in the years to come!

I would refer you to anyone and everyone who I hear is looking for a pet. Thank you for everything,

The Lockard family

Dear Huron Valley Humane Society,

My boyfriend and I adopted King, now Tucker, in late April. When we arrived at the Humane Society, we had little idea of what kind of dog we wanted. All we knew was that we wanted a dog as playful and energetic as we are. We walked in and the first dog we saw was King, a beautiful but sad Lab mix. He immediately jumped up to greet us. We continued to look around, but no other dogs even cared that we were there. That's how we knew that King had chosen us as his family.
Tucker has been nothing but a great edition to our family. He is the sweetest dog I have ever met. He quickly got rid of those sad eyes, and is nothing but a ball of energy. He loves everyone and is thrilled when he gets to give anyone some of his sloppy doggy kisses! He has been a complete joy to have in our lives!

Thank you so much for bringing Tucker into our lives!

Thanks,
Kelly, Mike and Tucker!

We adopted Milo in late August, for my 20 year old daughter. Her dog of 8 years died in June of cancer, he was a pure bread Aussie. My dog is a Bordercollie, and my husband's dog is a German Shepherd.

In the past I've always gone to breeders, to get a dog, but let me tell you - Milo is very affectionate,  goofy, and so happy to see all of us! He blends very well with the other dogs. I think he's got the sence of a Shepherd and he's catching on to everything with ease.

We love him, and he loves us back.

THANK YOU HUMANE SOCIETY OF HURON VALLEY,

The noble family

10-13-08 - Klaus (formerly Cobo)

It's been six wonderful weeks since Labor Day weekend, when Klaus joined our family.

We came to the Humane Society that day looking for the "perfect" dog, not at all sure we'd bring one home.  (Perfect for me meant a mellow adult female, 25-40 lbs, who would love cats).  A few that interested us weren't yet available for adoption, so on a whim we decided to take that crazy, male, 50 lb puppy named "Cobo" for a walk around the property.  He was handsome enough, but he strained so hard on the leash, and jumped on other dogs and people so wildly, we weren't sure we could even finish the walk.  Determined to see if he had a calm side, we ran him around the property, and played catch in the fenced area.  After a long time, he finally laid down - letting his tongue just flop in the dirt. When I approached, he rolled on his back and let me rub his belly. We were hooked.

Today, you would not believe he is the same dog.  Fresh with a new name, Klaus arrived fully house trained, and took to crate training effortlessly.  He is gentle and tolerant with our three kids and eight cats, and is doing well in dog obedience class.  He loves to play catch and go hiking, has run 5K at Hudson Mills, and gone on his first tent camping adventure.  Most of all, he loves to lay on the couch with his head in a lap and get his belly rubbed.

It's hard to believe Klaus spent two months at HSHV before we brought him home.  But we're glad he did, because we got what we were looking for when we visited HSHV - our perfect dog.

10-12-08 - UPDATE ON ROCKY!

I am sorry that I don't have a picture to add to this of Rocky, but every time I try to take a picture of him he moves!

Rocky is such a wonderful dog and I am so happy that my Grandmother decided to adopt him. He has made such strides from where he was back in May when she adopted him to now.  When we brought him home he was running into things and constantly and falling whenever he ran.  Now it is hillarious to watch him run; he runs in large circles as fast as he can.  Sometimes I am sure that he is going to take out a tree, but he hasn't yet.

My Grandmother tried to change his name to Jack or Jack-Boy but every time she called him that he wouldn't answer.  He could be standing right in front of her and she would call him Jack and he wouldn't turn around until she called him Rocky!  My pet name for him is just Rocks and he seems to like that name as well.

I cannot thank you enough for giving us the opportunity to adopt him.  He is always so happy, in fact now he is hitting the computer trying to get me to play tug of war with him.  I hope that we can bring him in soon to visit.  Thank you for taking the time to care for him and bring him back to the wonderful happy dog that he is today!

Dear HSHV,

I recently celebrated my 2 year adoption anniversary!!

I thought I'd let you know that I'm doing well and having a wonderful time with my Mom and Dad.  One of my new favorite activities is to go hiking and camping with my family.  I also love to swim.  But, mostly, I like relaxing at home and cuddling with my family.

I feel like such a lucky dog.  Although time has passed, I will never forget the generosity of the folks at HSHV (especially Chris, my favorite dog walker) and how they helped me find my new family.

Thank you, thank you.

Love, Hudson (Ben and Monica)

Dear HSHV,

Thank you all once again for the best friends I could ever wish for! This is a truly heart warming story about 2 wonderful dogs who's life was in the hands of the best shelter in the world and they took great care and love to get them back on there paws and in a loving home like mine.

My dogs have been a blessing. The first time I saw Boss, the American bulldog Pitbull mix, it was a mutual love at first sight! That was about 2 years ago and since then boss has been a perfect dog. He is as trained as a dog can be - I just showed him what I want he does it. He rides in my tow truck you might have seen him in a Fox's truck loving it. He became the best thing in my life very fast.

So, after 2 years I knew it was time for a new buddy for Boss and I. We headed to the best place, the HSHV. Once again I had love at first sight - a little blue Weimerener mix named then Buella but after her well manners and gentle love I call her Lady. Lady and Boss took a couple of hours to adjust and then it was love. He holds her, sleeps touching her and loves our long walks.

I have to say that I do have an ability to train dogs with ease but these dogs just needed love! The HSHV is the best!

Lady, Boss, and I can not tell you how much you all mean to us. Your work has given me the best things in my life - true love and friendship.

Jason

Dear HSHV Staff,

I'm so happy to be at my new home! I'm glad to be recovered from my heart worm treatment; now I can chase squirrels and ducks on my daily walks in the park. I'm okay with being second in command to my cat brother Parker who herds me into a corner when he wants space. But we are actually becoming pals, and I can't wait for us to cuddle when it gets colder. I just have to keep trying to make friends with my himalayan cat sister Shasta who runs and hides from me. Did I tell you? I love my new parents! I follow them all around the house and nudge their hands when they aren't petting me. They were suprised to find I'm perfectly behaved! I haven't made any messes inside or chewed on anything that isn't mine. I've even made myself useful by barking when strangers or animals come too close to our house. Our big fenced backyard is great and I have pointed out some possible escape routes so I enjoy it on a leash for now. My parents wanted you to know that they love me very much and can't imagine how they ever lived without my smiling face! Thanks SOOOO MUCH HSHV!!!

Just a quick note to let you know that MoJo and JoJo have settled in fine.

JoJo was out and about the house right away. Mojo came out of his shell the next day. They both love to climb up on my lap at the same time and watch tv with me.

They said to say thanks for taking such good care of them!

Dear HSHV,

I wanted to thank you and to also let you know that my beautiful dog, Lucy is doing well.  I adopted her towards the end of March 2008.  Her original name was Thalia, but we changed it to Lucy and she responds really well to that name!

When Lucy first came home, she was not feeling very well.  Your staff did a wonderful job and were very helpful and patient with us during the many visits we had to make after her adoption.  I'm happy to say that she is healed up and is very energetic and happy (it's amazing considering that she's a "senior" dog!)  I feel confident that she and I have several more "golden" years to come.

Again, thank you!

Dear Friends;

Thanks for placing me in this home. There are three adults here - Ed and Grandma and Grandpa. They all adore me. They tell me regularly that I am the most beautiful and cute cat that they have ever seen. They love my coat and my little face and ears, and they pet and play with me often.

Until today I had that awful virus. Grandma and Ed worried about me - afraid somehow that I was very sick. They didn't think that I was full of energy. By the way, I took that awful tasting medicine without too much of a fight.

Today as I started to feel better I showed them - I jumped up on the breakfast table, and then in quick succession I also tried the dining table and Grandma's dresser. Even though they put me down, they were all happy that I was feeling better and behaving "cat-like".

Aunt Debbie and her boys think that I am very very special too. They use such words as "Queen" and "Beautiful" also.

I am happy here, and I thank you for placing me in this home.

Quinn (Love and thanks, Dave, Ruth and Ed Tabler)

I want to share a picture of my kitties that I adopted in August. The picture is of them playing with their house.  One cat gets in and the other pushes her around the room. I adopted Harvey and Hobbit (now named Daisy and Daffy) at the end of July.  Since I was going to be out of town the first week of August they stayed with their wonderful foster mom until I was able to bring them home.

I brought them home on August 9th and they fell in love with their new home.  They love to eat, play, eat, sleep and eat!  They have seemed to adjust very well and I can't imagine not having them around. Thanks so much to the Humane Society of Huron Valley and their foster mom Jessica.

They are such a joy to have in my home!

My wife and I had come to the HVHS many times looking for the perfect dog after the passing of our cat Bonnie.....we have two other cats who we felt would get along well with a dog, but Bonnie was always very particular and so we wanted to wait for just the right time to add a bigger four-legged friend.

On one of our trips in June 2008, a volunteer named Chris met with us in between walking a few dogs and asked what we were looking for in a dog. We told her that we were looking for a medium-sized dog with a kind disposition who would get along well with cats. She said that she thought there was a great match for us who'd just come in and wasn't even checked in yet. She went back to the new intake section of cages and brought around the cutest black flat-coat retriever who'd been found as a stray. This dog was so excited to meet us and covered us in kissed while we petted her, and we knew right then and there that this dog was the one for us.

We put in an application right away, and went back to visit her later that week when she'd been trimmed and bathed and given the name Lulabelle. A few days later, we were allowed to take her for her first walk and she was everything we'd hoped she would be: responsive, gentle, and very playful. After her check-in, cat test, and spaying we took her home and she's been wonderful ever since.

While we're in the process of getting on top of a mild case of separation anxiety, she's getting along great with our cats as well as other dogs in our condo complex. She loves the crate we got for her, and has quite a collection of play toys to help keep her busy. While we'll never know exactly what led Lula to being stray, I don't know how anyone could lose track of such a kind and loving pet but their loss is our gain, and we're fortunate to be the family that got to bring her home with us. All in all, she's been the perfect addition to our family and we can't thank Chris and the rest of the kind staff at HVHS enough for bringing our Lulabelle into our lives!

Hi HSHV!

I couldn’t help but pick out a companion kitty for my newly adopted Jinx (formerly Domino).  Patti Mackey did a great job fostering my new little girlie, Julia (Juju for short)!  She loves her new brother and often is the “play time” initiator.  My family is so happy to have two cats for the first time.  She is sweet and fun and just the cutest little thing.

Thanks to all the clinic workers and volunteers for all of the hours you put in.  And a special thanks to everyone who fosters.  You are the ones that spend your love and energies encouraging cats and dogs to be lovable and adoptable!!

Biff (now Nugget) and Cody have settled in to their new home, and are enjoying play/naptime spent with older “siblings”, Zephyr (cat), Merlin (cat) and Joker (Welsh Corgi). They are very playful and love to climb around on their “tower”. They also seem to love their new “Mom”, and the feeling is VERY mutual!

Hello HSHV Staff & Volunteers!!

And most importantly....THANK YOU!! Thank you for all your good work and kind hearts.

We adopted Lily (a.k.a. 'Midge') exactly one week after losing our beloved Daisy, who we also adopted from HSHV over 11 years ago. In preparing for the inevitable loss of Daisy, we'd talked about waiting to adopt another dog - but then reality hit, and the void was just to much to bear. We decided to start 'looking' with the thought that it might take a while for us to find the right fit. Now we feel that Daisy left us when she did, in order to give us the gift of Lily. The timing was perfect for us to find the perfect fit in just two visits - unbelievable!

While Daisy was a Staffy (a Pitt), and we adored her, we weren't necessarily looking for another Pitt. But when we saw how many Pitts are being sheltered and put down, we became more and more drawn to the idea of adopting another one. It just so happened that Lily was not only the perfect fit for us, but also a Pitt in need of a good home.

We took Lily up north for a big family weekend just three weeks after bringing her home, and everyone was completely impressed with how mellow ('calm') she is for being less than a year old, and how sweet she is too! Even our extremely skeptical family members have become Pitt converts after meeting Lily! One family member went so far as to ask if we would pick a dog out for his family, since we always seem to pick ones with really great personalities.

Lily is just a pure pleasure to have around, and we feel very lucky to have found her!

I'm sending along some pictures. Lily's favorite activity these days is trolling our backyard ponds and creek for frogs and crawdads. She can go for hours and hours, just walking the perimeters, or in the case of the creek, she walks right down the center.

We're eternally grateful for the services you provide not only to all the lovable critters you care for and help find homes for, but also for the services you provide for our community as a whole. The HSHV ROCKS!!! And a special thank you to Helen. When is the first meeting of the Positive Pitt-Bull Club Helen? Keep us posted :)!

Hello there, I just wanted to thank you again for allowing me to adopt two adorable kittens from the humane society.  I have adopted a few from there, and the last two are rock solid cute.  I have sent some pictures with this e-mail.  I named Romulos, Remus.  The two brothers have grown by leaps and bounds, are healthy, and part trouble makers....lol.

Enjoy the pictures, I know the first one made me go "Wow, Beutiful cats", and the second picture was a mix of "Awww, and check out those two cats"!

My family met Oscar on July 26th at Pet Smart. We had not planned on going there at all, but my daughter (13) suggested we go inside to just look around. Well as we rounded the corner of the cat stuff, we saw Oscar for the first time . . . It was Love At First Sight for all of us!

My son Forrest for his whole life, has always wanted a Persian cat and it happened that on that day it was his 15th birthday.  Oscar has started growing his fur back so he is getting fuzzy all over.  We all love Oscar So So So much, even our 3 year old shepard/retriever mix (Mickey) likes him.  He is so cuddly and sweet and has to sleep right next to someones head at night.

Oscar loves treats and will eat anything so we have to watch carefully when my young son (2 yrs) eats at the table that he doesn't eat anything bad for him.. (he actually ate a strawberry the other day).

I also wanted to say that for years I have wanted to volunteer at the humane society and for whatever reason it never worked...until now.  Oscar has given me a gift I will take with me for my remaining years.  I really believe that he pushed me to start my journey finally to become a positive active member in the community and help any and all animals that I can in any way.  Thank you Oscar and thank you Humane Society of Huron Valley.

Sincerely, Maya BraveHeart-McAlinden

Hello everyone at Huron Valley Humane Society!

My name is Gypsy and I was adopted from your shelter right before Christmas time.   I wasn't a Christmas gift though.  My owners were looking for just the right dog to add to their family for a really long time.

They looked all over and on the day they came into your shelter they looked around at all the dogs in their cages and wished they could take them all home!  Still, none of them were just exactly what they were looking for.  One of the volunteers mentioned to my parents that a transport of puppies were going to come in within the half hour so they decided to wait to see who the new arrivals were.  Welp, it was ME and my littermates.  As soon as my mom and dad saw me in the intake room they were asking if I was a boy or girl and other questions to the volunteers.  They didn't know any of the answers because I hadn't even gotten checked in yet!  The volunteers let me be taken out of my travel crate and when my mom and dad saw me they knew I was the one they were looking for!

I barely made it into the shelter and I was adopted right there on the spot!  I did stay overnight to get my spay surgery and my mom and dad picked me up the next day.  So most of you probably don't even remember me. I didn't stay with you very long at all.  I was SO lucky to find a home right away!

Dear Friends at HSHV,

Last spring we adopted two cats from your shelter. Their names were Steve and Mabel the Manx. After a few months of getting to know these beautiful animals, we would like to tell you how well they are doing. We love them both and are glad they are part of our family.

In April, we adopted a cream tabby named Steve, who now goes by Kepler. Kepler is an energetic boy who loves to play with his toys and often gets stricken with a case of the friskies, a state in which he runs and jumps crazily about the house as he plays. He is extremely vocal and enjoys “talking” with us. Kepler is quite the people friendly cat.

When we adopted Kepler on April 5, we had met Mabel the Manx. When no one had adopted her by the end of May, we knew we had to give this sweet little girl a home, too. Before her adoption, we were made aware that she has allergy issues that were causing her to pick her hair off her abdomen. We are still working with her vet to control this problem and are glad that we are able to give her a home where she can be loved and cared for by a family. In her new home, she loves to follow people, "hunt" toy mice and mother Kepler. She is such a sweet, happy cat that we renamed her Maynrys, the Manx word for happiness.

Thank you for bringing more happiness into our home by helping us meet and adopt Kepler and Maynrys, two awesome cats.

We've had Carly (originally named Carla) for about 4 months now. With the patience (most of the time) from us and guidance of our other dog, Jake, Carly has come a long ways. I never seem to have a camera at the right moments for most of the best photo ops. But, here's one of her enjoying one of her favorite activities (she's on the right).

She is full of energy and another favorite activity is running with our neighborhood "dog whisperer". This neighbor runs up to 5 big dogs at the same time, twice a week, for 3 miles, all of them male except Carly.

Carly is the only girl but she certainly rules the pack and likes to be in the lead! In addition to the dogs knowing the day of week and anticipating these bi-weekly runs, we also take our two dogs on our pontoon boat. We've created a special dog ladder so the dogs can jump off and climb back onto the pontoon boat without assistance. Here's a pic of our two dogs - Jake (the 100# yellow lab) and Carly (the 50# new family member). They love this swimming recreation and sleep very well at night as a result.

Carly was originally labeled as a very active dog. With the guidance of our other dog, Jake, she has continued to learn the rules (staying in the yard, coming when called, etc). She can be a lot of fun and energetic, but also very sweet and cuddly. We are very happy with her, and I think she is happy also!

If we can get a good pic of her running with the "big dogs" we'll send that in also.

Sincerely,

Steve, Beverly, and Lindsey Selvig, Pinckney, MI

Annie "The Wonder Beagle" celebrates her academic achievement and her birthday!

After years of nose-to-the-ground study, Annie has earned a dual bark-a-laureate degree in food management and residential hospitality.

She invited human and furry friends alike to celebrate her exceptional academic achievements--as well as her birthday! The celebration took place at her mother's (Judy White) home on August 3rd.

The guests brought donations for the Humane Society of Huron Valley. There were 13 party animals in attendance this year along with 26 adults, one baby, one 10-year-old, and four teenagers.

Annie has consistently held her birthday party as a fundraiser for HSHV over the years.

Thank you Annie!

A while ago I adopted a kitty from you, and I thought it was about time to give an update on how we're doing together! I named her Maya, but I usually end up calling her by some silly nickname (like 'Cheeks McGee' or 'Fuzzenstein.')

She doesn't know that she's a cat. I've never met such a friendly animal of any species in my entire life. Everyone who meets her comments on how she is 'special' and how it's rare to find a cat that is so unusually friendly. She is always near me, and usually licking me! Also, she's a 'talky' kitty, so I let her record my voicemail greeting. :D

She always uses her litter box and scratches only on her scratching post. She is so well behaved it's almost eerie. I could leave a meat-lovers pizza on the floor overnight and wake up to find it totally untouched. (Seriously!)

She is literally perfect in every way. I couldn't ask for a better friend and I feel like I am the luckiest person in the world for finding her! (Actually, she found ME with those big sad eyes...)

I'm sending along a couple of pictures. In the one where she is licking my hand; she isn't licking food.. she just licks me if I come close enough. Hehe.

Thanks for matching me up with the best kitty in the world....

We adopted Tico (you may well know him as "Jesse the licky cat") back in late June '08. We decided to call him Tico after my mother's high school nickname. Tico is a popular song from the 40's. He is becoming used to his new name and talks back to me often! He's a real talker with a big loving personality. He still gives lots of licky kisses and loves his tummy scratches :)

Tico is an all 'round success!

Thanks to HSHV for this wonderful new family member!

Dear HSHV Staff,

The two kittens we adopted are doing wonderful. Chloe (aka. Silly Sally) and Sparky (aka. Colby Jack) are getting along well and both have become friends of our older cat Jynx. Sally had to have a visit back to the clinic, she wasn’t feeling well. Shes doing much better now.

Thanks to the whole staff there, you do a great job.

Thanks

Princess Marie now known as Zoey is settling into her new home. My family had been looking for a doberman for about 4 months and we weren't having any luck. Our other doby had died and we were ready for a new dog. I saw this doberman on petfinder and I had to check her out. My mom and I drove from Clinton Twp. to see her. I went up to the cage and put my hand on the links, she started to lick my hand. I knew we were going to take her home that day. She plays well with the neighborhood dogs and loves to sleep on my bed. She is spoiled rotten and it's hard to imagine that she was every a stray. She runs wild outside and lays around with the family while we watch TV.

Thank you for Zoey, she is greatly loved and will be sure to spend the rest of her life with our family.

Hi HSHV,

It’s been almost a month since I adopted “Simba” and things are going great!  I had gone to the shelter almost every weekend for several months trying to find the right dog and Simba is a perfect match.  I remember when one of the staff members in the adoption center handed me the bag of dog food and I turned to her and asked, “So, can I take Simba home today?”.  As I was asking her the question someone brought Simba in the door and said, “Here you go, he’s ready to go home.”

I burst out in a huge smile and took Simba with me.  He’s made an easy transition and has been very easy to train. Simba’s cool and smart personality routinely causes me to burst out in laughter.

Thanks for all of your help and encouragement,

Ed

Dear HSHV staff,

I just wanted to submit a "Happy Tail" about a new addition to our family!  Starting with the sadder news, our 8 year old cat, "Riley," developed kidney disease and it was only a few months before he stopped eating and just wasn't himself.  Unfortunately, he passed away.  It seemed too soon to get a new cat, but since I had been volunteering at PetSmart as a cat comforter, I met a kitten named "Domino" that I just had to have.  My family adopted "Domino," now called "Jinx" (the good kind I swear!!!), on July 21 and we are just thrilled!  He's sweet, he's less sweet, and he's a joy to have around!  We all miss "Riley" terribly but "Jinx" is doing a really good job of keeping us happy.

Thank you so much for all of the work you do and for bringing to many people happiness.  Congratulations and good luck on the new facility!

Not too long ago, I sent an e-mail about Zack, Jazz, Dalton, and Maybeline.  All but Maybeline were adopeted from the HSHV.  I have attached a picture of my wonderful dog family taken with my grandkids, Miranda and Quincy.  I hope you enjoy them.  One of the doxies, a dapple that I helped find a home for, now lives in Ann Arbor.  Bailey the boxer has crossed the bridge, and there is dalton and zack.

Thanks again for all your support HSHV,

Liz Wawrzazek

Hello from the Patrick Family!

We figured it was time to update you on "Pooh Bear" now known as "Dexter".  We adopted him on April 7th and he has been a joy to us ever since.  It took him a couple weeks to really feel at home, but from the beginning he has been a loyal and loving pet.

He gets a long great with our two beagles and surprisingly plays mostly with our oldest (12 y.o. Pepper).  He also plays really well with our 3 y.o. daughter.  His favorite activites are tug-o-war and frisbee and he abosolutely LOVES chasing birds. And thankfully, all he wants to do is please us, so he has done exceptionally well at his JumpStart class and we plan on getting him involved in agility as well because his energy is never-ending.

We thank you for taking care of him while he was waiting to come home with us and we appreciate all you do for animals in need.  And we will always rescue our future pets!

Thanks again, Kelly, Stephen, and Ella Patrick

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 24, 2008

Charlie Wilson’s War” turns out to be nothing more than an occasional skirmish!

Ann Arbor, MI—The Wilson family adopted Charlie, a dilute grey and cream calico cat with white paws, days before her birthday in late June. The cat’s paperwork described her as a stray named “Meep,” estimated to have been born June 29, 2006. This date was also her new owner’s birthday! The birthday cat was renamed “Charlie Wilson” after the Hollywood movie Charlie Wilson’s War. Laurie Wilson said, “We knew we’d need a friendly big cat with the strong constitution and giant personality to maintain composure in a house with two behaviorally challenged small rescue dogs and a two year old child!” Committed to getting the animals and kids into happy homeostasis, the war was soon on!

The Wilsons ran all the introduction stages religiously as suggested by the HSHV adoption video. Turns out everything was smooth sailing with very little issue. With just a month in the house, Charlie is the well acclimatized girl for the Wilsons! “She’s bossy, tough and friendly all in one! She’s a great eater, with excellent habits and loves everyone,” says Jon Wilson. The cat soon adapted to her new life and made it clear she wasn’t about to put up with small dog shenanigans and jealousy. Soon she was sleeping on the couch with her two canine roommates in the dog day afternoons. The Wilson’s 17 year old son, Kyle, is a photographer and filmmaker who has already made Charlie the subject of several art projects. “The dogs were getting tired of being the most photographed pets in Ann Arbor, and were ready to pass the fame baton to a younger racer,” he said.

A mellow and flexible cat personality coupled with owners who know the ropes in the “adoption adaptation” process, helped Charlie girl to fit into her new settings more quickly than ever imagined! Charlie has learned to answer to a million names, including “Tai-E” which two year old Devi Wilson calls her.

Adoption Review: “A four star success****”!

Dear HSHV Staff,

This "Happy Tail" is about LEXI the adorable Shetland Sheepdog we adopted recently. She is wonderful and she loves her new family. We kept her name, and Lexi has been pampered with lot's of TLC since we got her. She loves to go for walks and car rides. LEXI is getting over her "anxiety issues" and shows no signs of her reported past behaviors.

We love LEXI and are so happy she's become part of our family. LEXI recently got treated to a SPA treatment and she apparently now loves "Vanilla Milk Baths" and being pampered. LEXI fits in perfectly, she loves to be by one of us at all times and we love it too. I want to thank the staff for being so helpful and courteous but most importantly for taking such good care of LEXI until we could be united. Keep up the phenomenal work you do daily at the shelter and THANK YOU again.

Sincerely,
The Mealbach Family

Hello,

We adopted a kitten, "September" (now "Lola") from you a few weeks ago. We wanted to let you know that Lola is doing great; she's already gained 50% more body weight. She's very playful and loving, and a joy to have around.

Best wishes,

Dear HSHV Staff,

I am excited to update you with a happy tail about "Dale", the little black and white spaniel/terrier I adopted from your shelter in February of this year. I changed his name to Brooklyn, and he definitely lives up to the name with his spunk and scrappy nature.

Although he is only 23 lbs. he barks at dogs much bigger than he is in the park, and likes to show them whose boss. We are still working on this while out on walks. He is such an easy-going dog that he adjusted immediately to his new apartment and new job as church dog. As a pastor I spend a lot of time at church, and Brooklyn comes with me to sit through meetings and to greet people as they come in. He loves people, especially his 'mom' and loves to go with me wherever I go. And I am happy to say that everyone loves him too!

His favorite toy is his little tennis ball football; he even makes sure he takes it to bed with him. He is so agile and jumps from couch to couch in the living, and lounges on the arm or on the back of the sofa while I work. I just love him, and he seems to love his new home. I am so thankful that we found each other, and thankful to HSHV for their work and love for animals in need.

Peace,
Amy Kienzle

Hello,

I just wanted to drop you a line, Diesel, a german shepard, dachund mix, whom we adopted in march, is doing really well. He likes to sleep in his crate at night, loves to run in the yard, play with his "bonecy" and after a little adjustment has become best friends with our lab Lizzie.

Patty our other humane society brittany-ish dog is too old to spend a lot of time with him, but she does occasionally run around with him. Thank you for all the hard work you do every day, and for providing us with yet another joyful experience.

Although Patty probably will not be with us much longer, she is possibly 12 or so, we will definitely be back to "browse" for another dog one day.

Again, best wishes,

Felicia & Mark Kieme

Dear HSHV,

I recently adopted Magglio (formerly known as Chapman while in your care). Everything has been going wonderfully, and I could not be happier with my new four legged friend. He has done wonderful with me and plays wonderfully with my family and friends' dogs.

For the holiday weekend we went up north and Magglio had so much fun playing with all of the other dogs up there. Attached is a picture of Magglio at the lake, right after a swim.

Thank you very much to all of you for taking such good care of Magglio while he was in your care, and for everything you do for all of the other animals in the area!

Sincerely,

Gretchen Martuch and Magglio

Dear HSHV,

I chose Sherman a Shepard mix for my birthday gift in March 2007. His new name is Kudos.

I love Kudos. He's funny, smart and cute as pie. Potty trained at the wee age of 4 months old, learned all the tricks and he stole my heart.

Kudo's is very accident prone.......but has survived all of his silly moves..good thing I work for a vet.

I wish everyone could experience he joy my dog brings to me.

I recently rescued a Kitten and Kudo's just loves the Kitten, they are best friends and it brings joy to my heart to see them cuddle and sleep together.

I love my dog and want to Thank you!!!!

Hello,

I wanted to drop you a quick note to tell you that the cat we adopted in early April is just a wonderful little guy and happy as a clam (by every sign that we can see!).

He was named Tucker when we adopted him on 4/5/08. (Now, he's Boozey). He's got beautifully healthy teeth, fur, nails and a good appetite. He loves to play. He's always poking around and chasing his wand and favorite hair tie.  He also has very sweet moments, though as a rambunctious toddler his energy outweighs his desire to cuddle most of the time.

Thanks for everything - the adoption was very smooth and well-facilitated. We're so happy with him and really think he's happy, too.  If his owner ever asks after him, please let them know he is just fine.

Best,
Emily Jadwin

Hi All:

My happy tail is that I came to your shelter looking for a small dog and ended up leaving the next day with a shepherd hound mix named Knox. He cought my eye in the kennel and when I got to take him out he gave me a big hug which fit perfectly because it was valentines day! My heart was sunk and I couldnt leave without him. I've had him for 4 years and he's the best dog I've ever owned. I did however re-named him Buddy to suit his personality.

On February 18, my husband and I came to the HSHV without the intent of adopting a dog. We were simply "looking". That was until we came across Millie (now named Mollie) quietly sleeping in her kennel while all the other large dogs barked. This sweet ~2-year-old Beagle (age actually unknown) was just what we were looking for. She was small and rather quiet. While we spent a few moments with Mollie, I mentioned to my husband that "this dog is perfect!" It turns out that she is the perfect fit for our young family. Without looking at another dog, we decided to adopt her!
Mollie is one of the sweetest and most loving dogs I have ever met. She is also a very goofy dog. When we first adopted her, she was inflicted with Kennel Cough which meant that it took some time for her true personality to show. Now 4 and 1/2 months later, her personality is shining! She loves to play with her Kong toy and a stuffed bunny that no longer has any fluff in it! Although she loves to play, she also loves to cuddle and spend time with us. She has the true Beagle nose and loves to chase bunnies and squirrels in the woods near our home. That is the only time her voice comes out as well, which makes a great fit with apartment life. She is truly the perfect fit for this family! She has settled into her new home with her new family! We can't thank you enough for picking up this stray and helping her find a new home with us!

Sincerely,
Emily and Timothy Deschenes

Hi Everyone!

Teddy and Bethany here, just wanted to tell you that we just moved to Seattle, WA! It is absolutely beautiful here with all the mountains and trees. We drove across country and it took 7 days, because we went slow and made lots of stops to pee.

Thought you might want to know that we are happy and loving life. Teddy is doing great since his tracheal surgery, and has even been off the prednisone for 4 months now. He has been with me every night since the day I got him last September, and he is pretty much attatched to my hip. We are all going to a family reunion in Oregon this weekend, and I am sure he is looking forward to playing in the water!

Hope you guys are doing well, Teddy and I will never forget you and the happiness you brought each of us by bringing is together!

Thanks,
Bethany and Teddy

Hi HVHS staff,

In January 2008 I adopted two cats named Nemo and Dudley. Two months before that my cat Gertie had passed away after being sick for several months and I missed having a cat around the apartment. I was so happy to adopt Dudley and Nemo from the HSHV and they have been a great source of happiness to me and my friends for the past six months. Dudley and Nemo, who kept their names given to them by HSHV, were adopted together though they were not a purrrfect pair. There was some concern at first whether the two of them would get along, but by the second day of having them home they were best of friends. They enjoy napping together and getting love and attention from anyone who walks through the door. I am so glad I choose to get my cats from the Humane Society, because they bring me happiness.

This picture was taken the first week we brought Dudley and Nemo home while they were taking a nap together.

Thank you,

Stephaine

Dear Staff at HSHV,

We adopted Chester (right, formerly "Pumpkin Patch"), who was living in the communal cat room at HSHV, almost two years ago. He has always been very friendly and playful, so we decided that he would enjoy having another cat around to keep him company while we were at work. Last month we went back to HSHV and found Hazel (left, formerly "Fendi"), a two month old female kitten.

We were nervous about introducing the cats, and tried to follow the instructions that the adoption counselor gave us as best we could. We were told to be patient and not rush them together, but the cats had their own ideas, and were coexisting and playing together in less than a week.

Chester and Hazel grow closer every day. The two of them love chasing one another and playing their stalk-pounce-groom game. We catch them cuddling and napping together sometimes, but their favorite thing is to cuddle with us when we watch TV - Hazel will sleep between a pair of legs and Chester will stretch out for a tummy rub.

Thank you so much for both of our wonderful cats!

With the passing of our cat, Kitty, we decided we did not want our daughter to be without a pet in the home.  We decided we wanted to adopt a cat and not a kitten.  First we took in a cat from a co-worker, Peanut, who did not really get along with the other cats in her house and ran and hid from them.  Peanut was not very happy at our place and would not come out from hiding except late at night to drink water and go to the bathroom.  So after about four days she went back home with our co-worker.  We went to PetSmart by Target to look at cats to adopt, and that is where we found Scio.  It has been about two weeks since we adopted her.  As soon as we brought Scio home, she was very comfortable and happy.  In fact, Scio pretty much already thinks that she owns the place.  The good news about Peanut, is that she no longer has to be locked up because she doesn't take any guff from the other cats now.  So everything turned out well for Peanut and she is happy to be back with my co-worker and Scio and our daughter like to play together.  Here is a picture of them together.

For taxonomy purposes only, I must inform you that the Large Cat that my husband and I adopted from HSHV is actually a Small Cow. We plan on keeping her forever, unless zoning laws regarding farm animals housed within city limits are enforced.

In her defense, Oreo tries very hard to live up to the expectations we had of a pet cat. The purring is loud and convincing (especially at night, when she wakes me up by kneading my hair or licking/ very delicately biting my chin). She practices meowing more than any REAL cat I've ever met. Also, when Oreo sits in my lap--at any opportunity--she is careful to distribute her considerable girth evenly over both of my knees so that my legs don't fall asleep...every time. Oreo even pretends to love string games, and will leap and chase toys for an hour at a time, just to indulge us.

I understand the oversight on the part of HSHV, and don't blame you. Sometimes she still fools us.

Sincerely,
Rhonda Toole

Update on Dante the Character:

We were all waiting for the perfect kitten to come, and we waited a couple weeks!! Every other day for 2 weeks we visited the Humane Society of Huron Valley. Along with that, every day we went online to Petfinder.com and hshv.org. Finally on a sunny Wednesday in the summer of 2004 we found him. He was black with cute white feet and a pink nose. A beautiful cat we now call Dante. When we received Dante he was not the happiest cat we'd seen. In fact Dante avoided are two other cats  - Duke and Payton. What was the sweetest of all was that every night around eight he would curl up in bed with me as I read my book.

Now Dante is the perkiest of the bunch, he has grown so much! I feel proud to have raised such a great cat. And despite the flees and the way he steels the dirty laundry from the hamper, it was all worth it.

Hi there,

We thought we would send a picture of Devona in her new home.  We have changed her name to Athena, and she has fit in since day one.  We adore her, as does everyone she comes across.  We are still trying to get weight on her, she is eating very well for us.  Our baby girl loves the couch, and the bed for that matter.

We do want to send out a thank you to everyone that helped in her care, and gave her so much love and attention, until we could get there to take her home.

Please continue all of your hard work.  You do such a great job, and I hope more wonderful animals like Athena, will be able to get adopted to their own homes very soon.

Much thanks to all,

Laurel and Jared Bedore

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that helped us to adopt Bailey, the rather large one-eyed lab. We came home with her and she just fit right in from the start - it was like she was waiting for us the whole time and us for her!

Bailey got her bath and much needed brushing, she just loves the sprinkler and as soon as she stands still I will send you more pics of her and our other lab secora chasing the water back and forth.

Thank you again for making our family bigger and better.

She loves everyone and everybody and I can not tell you how grateful we are to have her and also a HUGE thank you to the family that gave her up with out them we wouldn't have her so thank you and we will continue to love both of our four legged babies.

Greetings from Chelsea.

In March I adopted Buddy, a big, 8 year old, gray and white neutered male.  Just wanted to let you know he is doing great.  After some obligatory hissing from my other (even bigger) cat, they have settled in and get along well together.  His coat is really beautiful now  --  I comb them both most every day.  He is not a lap cat but will stand on my lap and knead for a long time, then perch on the arm of my La-Z-Boy for as long as I sit there.  He is the most composed feline I have ever seen, and I've had cats all my life.  The only 2 things that ruffle him are thunder and the vacuum.

Thanks again for our new friend and for all of the good work you do for the animals in our area.

Sincerely,

Margaret Kennedy

Hello:

I was an employee of HSHV in 1999.   I want to share with you that I currently share my home with, Dalton who was brought to HSHV as a puppy of approximately 5 weeks old - I became his mom.  People at the time I was there would have known me as the "Doxie Lady" and the "Dane Lady".

I further fostered several doxies who were all placed in loving doxie homes.  At the time of adopting Dalton I shared my home with Shaquille (our 2 year old Mantle Great Dane), and Bailey (our 6 month old boxer pup).

Dalton is now 9 years old, and is in terrifc health for a nine year-old doxie.  He has a terrific life with 4 brothers and and sister, a female doxie, (Maybelline) a male doxie (Zachery) , and a  Besinji (Jazelle) , and last but not least a beautiful Siamese cat named Katey what was abandoned on the the East side of Ypsilant 7 years ago, when Mark and I took her in.

I am proud to have worked with HSHV and realize how important it is to open your heart and your home to those that need you, whether human or animal.

Hello:

Rocky is doing great! We were worried that he might require long-term medical attention but we are very happy to report that he seems to have made a complete recovery. Rocky enjoys running around and playing just like any healthy dog would. We are so thrilled that we made the decision to adopt him. He's a blessing to us and we are so happy that you all gave him a second chance to find our home, where he will be loved forever.

Sincerely,

The Bak Family

Dear HSHV,

Last novemeber we purchased a pocket puggle, Emma. She loved going to doggie daycare but was lonely at home. We thought about getting another dog for a long time and we kept looking but my fiance and I couldn't agree on a size or breed. One day we had some extra time and needed something to do. We walked in and said we were looking at getting a brindle colored pit bull. We were showed 2 or 3 dogs then we came to princess. We fell in love with her right away. Later that day we brought Emma to play with her and they have been inseperable since.

Princess thinks she is 15 pounds like Emma so we have ended up with a 50 pound lap dog and we love every minute. She loves to go to the dog park, play with Emma or just lay on the couch.  Princess is the most gentle dog and couldn't have been a greater edition to our family. We had relatives that unfortunatley had a fear of pit bulls due to the media. Now, because they know Princess that fear is gone!! She has been healthy and happy since day one. Thank you for the opportunity to adopt such a wonderful dog.

Hello:

We adopted Corbin and Goliath in November 2006. They only met at the HSHV, but they love one another very much.

Sadly my husband lost his job and the work visa attached to it in September 2007, so we had to leave Ann Arbor and return to Britain. There was no question that our boys would be coming with us, even though I had to stay in the US for six months after they'd had a rabies test (Richard went home to work).

The kitties didn't like the journey much, but they've recovered very quickly and are enjoying themselves over here. They have always been in-and-outdoor cats, but it's nice to know there are no coyotes, raccoons or ticks here (and, of course, no rabies.)

As you can see, they like the stairs, they think it's an indoor tree.

Best wishes,

Liz Turner

We adopted Spike last September 2007 and we couldn't have asked for anything more.  When we first started looking to adopt a dog we would never have thought we would end up with a dog with such a personality that match's ours so well. We both owned dogs our whole life and never have we had a dog like him. He has to be the CLEANEST dog I have ever known. He literaly picks up after himself. When he wants to play he brings his toys up from the basement and when he is done he puts them back (he literally has a corner he keeps them in). If we take him on a walk he walks AROUND the mud puddles so he doesn't get dirty.

Everyone who meets Spike INSTANTLY falls in love. Now everyone who owns a Pit Bull knows how loveable these dogs are but lets face it, if you don't own one and you ask, "what kind of dog do you have?" and your response is Pit..they usually give you 'that look.' Like you are crazy, why would you get THAT kind of dog??? But every owner of one knows that they are AMAZING dogs!!

Spike's favorite things to do is play catch with his oversized soccerball attached to a rope and cuddle on the couch! He loves playing with his gf Skyy and running in circles in the yard on weekends and going on walks at night. Here is a picture taken over Christmas, Spike loves his red bowtie.

Thank you,

Karen

Hi there!

We are Sparty and Mindy (formerly Giovanni and Medina) and we are two very playful kitties who are just LOVING our new home with our new "mom", Rachel! We were adopted on May 22. Our first night in our new home was kind of scary for two little kitties as ourselves. Our new mom was so patient with us and we grew to love her. Now we can't imagine being afraid of her. We love to follow her around and snuggle up to her when she is on the couch. And our new home is so much fun! We have so many cool toys to play with, but we absolutely LOVE hanging out in the laundry basket!

We are grateful that our new mom adopted us together as we are such great pals. We love to play and snuggle together all the time. In fact we our favorite time to play is when our new mom wants to sleep! Thats ok though because we play in our pop-up tunnel and enjoy chasing our toy balls around the living room any time we like!

We are growing so fast too! We sure are happy to get lots of good food to eat and some treats when we've been such good kitties. Mom just shakes our treat bag and we come trotting in! Our foster mom, Debbie was so nice and we appreciate her loving us and taking care of us before our new mom could adopt us. We even posed for a couple of pictures to send to her! We are so happy here and we look forward to getting to know our new mom better and playing!

I was almost ready to give up my search for an Akita in Michigan after many weeks of going on Petfinder, and checking out dogs in the area that needed homes.  Then, to my surprise, up came the Humane Society of Huron Valley who had two Akitas that needed a home!  I adopted Prince (who is now named Loki) back in April.  My kids and I changed his name because he fits the name Loki very well.  Loki means “god of mischief” and he is also half-brother of Thor according to Greek mythology.  Our first Akita was named Thor.  Not bad, huh??

Loki has filled out quite nicely and has just completed his first dog obedience class!  I am hopeful that with a lot of love and work, he will make an excellent therapy dog in time.  He LOVES people and attention and training treats!  Loki is also very smart.  He was unsure about those visiting furballs (that we know as cats) when they first came over.  The cats taught him how to “growl” and raise his paw to “slap” when he wants to be left alone.  After all, it has happened to him so many times, he decided it was a great game!!

Loki loves to chase tennis balls and play with squeaky toys.  He’s been through at least 5 of them so far!  He met new friends, a Black Lab on one side of our house and a Siberian Husky on the other side.  Their introduction was somewhat difficult at first, but now they talk to each other and run up and down the fence for exercise.  And…speaking of exercise.  As if obedience training wasn’t enough, he gets to go on two-mile walks every day, weather permitting!  He’s not crazy about the training collar, but he sure likes to visit other homes with pets and search the neighborhood for more guys like him!  He gets so many compliments when we walk downtown Wyandotte.  He certainly is very beautiful, and stands in such a commanding presence that people are just amazed at his physical presence.  And SHED?????  We’ve filled up a black lawn and leaf bag with the coat he is now “blowing” for summer comfort!!  Thank goodness for hardwood floors!!  He loves to be groomed!  He also loves to chase the “one sweep” broom we use to corral all the dog hair!  He jumps back and forth and sideways while paw-slapping the broom head!!

I am very thankful to the Humane Society of Huron Valley for Zumaya (known as Andy to HSHV).  My husband and I adopted him in October 2007 when he was 8 weeks old.  He was adorable and fluffy and fun.  He is now over 10 mos old.  He is a very nice kitty and growing slowly into his adulthood and his kitten ways are somewhat behind him but still show up occasionally.

He is a quiet guy, one of few words.  He always greats us at the door when we come home, which we love.  He loves his multiple beds that are around the house and chooses them over a lap but he’s been that way since he was a kitten.  Occasionally he will lie next to us and purr really quietly and it makes us feel special.  He has very subtle ways of showing his affection but we shower him with ours all the time.  I am very happy with what a nice and content companion he has become to us.  I was never a cat person before but all of a sudden I can appreciate all felines, not just my own.  I am committed to his health and happiness for as long as we are blessed to have him.

Thanks so much,

Karen

Hi From Kota formely known as Bear:

I was adopted in May of 2008. Since than I couldn't be happier with my two loving parents. I go for at least 3 walks a day, play with my many toys and get more attention than I know what to do with. I just had my first vet visit and I am very healthy and I gained 3.5 pounds. I now take heartworm pills and Advantix so I don't get fleas and ticks! I get to play with other puppies and get to visit many family members. Thank you Huron Valley for finding me such a great home!!

Dear HSHV staff:

Just a quick note to thank you for the work you do and to give you an update on Jack - now known as Cooper.  It has been 3 weeks and he has been a wonderful addition to our family!  Our 4 kids absolutely adore him and he is such a good dog.  Cooper was house broken in 10 days and is such a smart dog.  He does like to chew, but has come a long way in figuring out what is okay to chew and what is off limits.  Cooper has added so much to our family in such a short time.  After losing our last 2 dogs (ages 12 and 15 who were also adopted from the humane society!) we weren't sure if the time was right.  But after visiting and seeing his adorable face, we knew it was time to move on.  Now we can't imagine life without him!  It is so wonderful to see our kids run, laugh and play with our new "baby".  We have also had so many questions on where we got him from.  People are amazed to find out that such a beautiful dog came from the humane society.  I have told everyone to check HSHV out as there are still too many animals without homes.  Hopefully they will and other animals will find their "forever families". Well, it's time to go play with the kids and Cooper.

Thank you again for the work you do.
