Special Needs Pets Can Shine Bright!
All animals need special care and love. Disabled pets often require a little extra time and energy. The HSHV “Diamonds in the Rough” program was specifically designed for animals that will require some special attention. Some are old, some are blind, some are really shy, and some have other characteristics that make a normal adoption difficult.
The HSHV “Diamonds in the Rough” program seeks potential adopters that are willing and able to care for a pet who may:
* have a physical disability
* or a chronic or terminal illness
* be recovering from a serious injury
* be elderly and/or requires hospice care at home
* have emotional and/or behavioral problems
We all deserve the ability to live our life out in a caring and nurturing home. Please consider the "Diamonds in the Ruff" pets below.
Current "Diamonds in the Ruff" waiting for adoption (last updated 7-21-09)
Sadie - Heartworm Positive
Sadie is a very sweet dog who loves people and loves to play! She's about 5 years old, and came to us because she kept getting accidental let out of her yard and brought in as a stray. Sadie is housebroken and she gets along with everyone she meets. She unfortunately turns out to have heartworm, which we will treat her for and for which you will have to bring her back get treatments.

| Bailey - Balance Problems
Bailey was previously owned but became separated from her family only to show up over a year later. Unfortunately her family had new pets by then and Bailey wasn't accepted. Poor girl. There are so many wonderful things about Bailey - were do we begin? When she was out in the lonely world she had an injury to her head. It causes Bailey to loose her balance and she has a permanent head tilt, but that does not slow Miss Thing down! She gets around just fine.
Bailey will talk to you until you pet her, brush her, or give her a Temptation Treat (which may be why she has gained too much weight). We are now cutting back on the treats and have Bailey on an exercise regime of chasing strings, feathers and ropes daily! We have to say that we all love Bailey very much and want her new family to embrace this special cat as much as we do.
Because of her balance problems, Bailey is content to be petted and brushed in the floor and really does not enjoy being off the ground. We think she gets dizzy when her paws are not on the ground so that scares her.
Bailey believes all other animals are just obstacles to her receiving all the love and attention she deserves, and dibs on the food bowl, so if she had her druthers, she'd probably choose to be an only pet - period! Bailey is 8 years old, and is residing in the Administration Building (were she is adored by everyone), so please come see her there. She has beautiful coloring, and the fur around her neck almost looks like she's wearing a scarf. |

Diamonds that have been adopted
UPDATE - Tina was adopted!
Tina is one of our Diamond in the Ruff kitties. She is a very sweet senior, 8 years old, who was lost or left to fend for herself. We know she had a home at some point because she was spayed prior to being brought to the shelter as a stray. Tina has striking coloring, dark brown/black tiger striping. She is missing hair on her tummy, and our vets think it may be Alopecia. So she may look a bit odd but she doesn't know it, she just knows she needs a new family to love! Tina is litter box trained, has had her shots and could go to a brand new and loving family today, is it you? She is a very dear gal who loves to be petted and to give head butts! |

UPDATE - Rudy was adopted!
My name is Rudy (but I am a girl dog - I have know idea why I was given that name). I'm a big gal and super sweet. I am a senior dog who would enjoy a quiet life. I don't need to go jogging, but I would enjoy nice leisurely walks. A nice bed by your fireplace would be just fine with me too. I have a wonderful personality and people always tell me what a nice girl I am.
Due to my age, I would prefer to live in a home without young children. I'm a "Diamond in the Ruff" because I'm 9 years old and do have some knee pain. I've been spayed, I've had my shots and I'd like to meet you and see if we are compatible! |

Update - Chantel went to Rabbit Rescue
She's a Diamond in the Ruff! Chantel bunny has the softest fur ever. She's a real beauty and very sweet. Chantel is about 8 years old, and has already been spayed so she could go to a new home right away. She's lived with cats and dogs and gotten along with them but is wary of small children. Chantel is just one of the beautiful bunnies we have at the shelter, come take a look! Bunnies make wonderful pets! Chantel was a little intimidated by the shelter noise and has gone to foster for the time being. Her foster Mom reports that: Chantel is an albino bunny. She has very limited sight. She is eaisly startled when you are in her cage so you must approach her very slowly. When you clean her cage you need to put every thing back where it was because of her limited sight. Chantel would do a lot better with a quiet home without kids. She is an older girl who need a quiet remainder of her life. For information on adopting her please contact HSHV at 734-662-5585, extension 111. |
