Hi,
We adopted Piper a few weeks ago. She is such a doll. When we brought her home, she ran into the house, checked out every corner of every room, even peeked behind the shower curtain, and then made herself at home! She is housetrained, knows several commands and words, sleeps through the night, and is well behaved; thanks to her previous owner(s). She didn't respond to Piper, so we named her Ruby. It took less than a day to learn her new name and she continues to learn other things very quickly. I had decided I could never love another pug after the heartbreak of suddenly losing my beautiful pug 5 years ago. Ruby showed it was possible. And, it's taken my husband a long time after having to make the difficult decision for his beloved husky mix to be put to sleep.
We are having so much fun playing, laughing, and cuddling with her; as well as tripping over tiny tennis balls and squeaky toys! She is an adorable, energetic, smart, curious, funny, sweet, perfect pug (with a double-curled tail)! The pictures show her lounging on the people couch watching over her kingdom and also snoozing on one of her own couches. We are so happy to have her and love her very much. Thank you to everyone at the HSHV for taking good care of Ruby until we ended up being lucky enough to be owned by a pug.

Hi All,
I have had a great experience adopting my new kitty, Jerry (charlie Brown). He has been a blessing to me. I began my journey at the beginning of December by packing up and moving to Toronto after graduation and leaving Mom and Dad behind. I quickly learned that I needed a companion. I soon made the decision to come home and adopt at the Huron Valley Human Society where we have always looked for adoptions and adopted a few in the past. A few weeks later I found Jerry waiting for a home, he was in rough shape and sad when I adopted him. He had an open sore from cuterebra while a stray. He has completely healed physically and emotionally since then. Jerry has adapted very nicely to being a Canadian cat and loves to play with feet and talk to birds. We have many years of adventures in front of us, and I couldn't think of a better kitty to take with me on the journey.

We just wanted to let you know that Moxie ( formerly Vermillion) has adjusted very well to our household. She and Allie (also from HSHV) are good friends and they can be heard running up and down the stairs at night. She adjusted very well to the location of the litter boxes and food dishes and is now teasing the dogs whenever she wants to. They still try to chase her, but are beginning to understand that she has her claws and will not back down.
We're really happy that Moxie chose us to be her forever family. Thank you to the wonderful folks at HSHV and to Dean for fostering Vermillion before we adopted her.

Greetings to our friends at the Huron Valley Humane Society !
I am writing to give you a update on our lovable Leni (Echo). Leni is everything we could ever ask for and much much more. It was almost as if she had always lived in our home, a bond was made immediately. Leni has brought so much joy to our lives, and I'm more then positive the feeling is mutual on her end. Now a days Leni spends her days playing with her toy mice, running in and out of her pink & orange tunnel, chasing her laser light, eating her yummy HALO food, watching out the window, and napping in all of her favorite spots (mostly in our laps).
Thank you so much for all you do at the shelter, your team is remarkable! If it wasn't for you guys we would not have our Leni...
Keep up the great work!

A few days before Christmas '09, I had the privilege of adopting an adorable young American Eskimo boy. He was named "Pekoe" at the time, but has adapted well to his new name, "Ivan." It was quite an ordeal to meet Ivan and bring him 130+ miles home, but he's so very worth it.
He has become my near-constant companion, often called spoiled for all the car rides and trips I take him along for (the attached photo is from one of his visits to Holland's frozen lakeshore). He's usually attentive and smart, and is quickly learning and honing his repertoire of commands.
He has filled a hole that had been hollow in my life for far too long; 3 years ago I had suddenly lost my dear half-eskie companion, Ivy, of 15 years... Memories of Ivy made everything a little bittersweet with Ivan in the beginning, but he quickly showed his own personality and I've come to adore the energetic individual he is :) After just the first day, he was an inseparable companion to my housemate's two dogs. He is even good around the cats.
I'm so glad to be sharing my life with such a great dog!
Thank you, HVHS. I look forward to many more years with my new friend.

Hi,
I wanted you to know that my new dog Walter
(formerly named Slinky) that I got from the Humane Society of Huron Valley on Feb 7., is a wonderful, kind and gentle dog, and is doing great!
He loves his new bed, his cat sister and brother, his tiny dachshund cousin, going for walks, rides in the car and of course his new mom! It is so refreshing to bring home a dog who is already house trained and obeys commands so that we can concentrate all of our energy on getting to know and love each other.
Thank you Humane Society for the good work that you do and for enabling me to bring home such a dear friend!

Hello,
Just wanted to let everybody know that Otis "The Road Warrior" is doing awesome in his new home.
It took him a while to get over his little upper respiratory infection, but once he did he sure kicked it up a notch!
He loves to eat, follow us around the house, eat some more, let the dogs know who's boss, and just relaxing in his new digs. Thank you very much for everything that you guys (and gals) do. We attached a picture of Otis on the "kitty condo" looking as handsome as ever.
Sincerely,
Chris and Becky McNulty

Hello!
I adopted two kittens from HSHV in July 2009- "Rose" and "Ozzie". "Rose" is now named Pax, and "Ozzie" is now named Cat Stevens. When I first introduced the two to each other, I was a bit nervous they would never get along! They kept fighting all the time. It only took some time though for the two to become a pair! Pax is my little fluffy bundle of joy, and Cat Stevens is my handsome mini-tiger now. He won't stop growing it seems! Pax thinks she is a dog, and is always underfoot, looking for attention, or curious about whatever someone is doing. Cat Stevens takes a bit longer to warm up to people, but he's a real cuddler. They are both friendly, adorable, funny, and very playful!
Before I planned to adopt these two, I was planning a 6 month trip to New Zealand, but plans fell through at the last minute. I was very upset, and I wanted to do something fun on the day I was supposed to leave to go overseas to take my mind off of it- and coming to HSHV and adopting Pax and Cat Stevens was it! My kittens have brought me, and anyone who has met them, so much happiness and laughter the past 8 months. I wouldn't trade anything for what they've given me! :)
Thank you HSHV!

In February of last year you rescued a starving Australian Cattle Dog and named her Calista. I was fortunate enough to be her adopter last March. A couple days ago we celebrated her 4th birthday, a date we picked because her life truly began when you rescued her. I wanted to update you on her progress and share a picture from her birthday party with you. We renamed her Rosebud, and usually call her Rosie.
The past year has been a challenge for all of us as she learned how to be a well behaved house dog, but through it all she has delighted us with her will to learn and her consistantally happy attitude! She makes us laugh with her antics, sometimes to the point where we have a hard time telling her no! She loves to play with Daisy, and the two of them are inseperable.
She now weighs 34lbs, which fits her frame perfectly. She is very muscular and loves to demonstrate her leaping and running ability. I plan to enroll her in a beginning agility class this spring, as I think she would excel in it and enjoy it. She amazes us with her intelligence and willingness to learn, and is always ready to try new things. Rosie has fit right in with our family, and is so much fun to have around! She has so much personality, and is a very loving little girl. To celebrate her birthday, my daughter baked and decorated a dog cake, which you can see her "blowing out her candles"
on and eating in the pictures. She also loves to open presents, Christmas was a riot as she learned that trick!
Thank you again for recsuing Rosie, she is a great little dog!!

Hi!
Just wanted to let you know that I could not be happier with Miss Alice! She is so adorable and fun to just let hop around. She's really enjoying all the free time outside of the cage. She's adjusting well and even getting use to all the yarn and knitted goods around.
Thanks again!

We were writing to thank you for the wonderful addition to our family. We adopted Moxi ( formally Sophie) in April 2009. We had an older dog, Oakly, who would get bored when we weren't home. We really thought he could use a pal.
Moxi was only two months when we adopted her but she has grown very fast. We originally thought she would be a big husky dog, but we think now she is some sort of shepherd mix, she has so much energy. She definitely gives Oakly a run for his money! We couldn't be happier and the house wouldn't be complete without her.
Thank You,
Courtney and Brandon Bray

UPDATE ON FLASH
We recently had a post on our Facebook page from the family that adopted Flash! Many people may remember Flash because he was with us for quite a while and was a laidback dog who many people and staff members loved.
Here's a new picture of Flash and his family loves him very much!

Here is KC (AKA Spuds) who came to our family from the Humane Society in September of 06 . You may not remember, but the fish he is resting his head on is part of his 2009 Walk and Wag bag. I suspect he’s contemplating walking again this year.
We’ve had our challenges with KC. Being a beagle, there have been several adventures. Him finding small gaps in our fence allowing for fast getaways when the wind was producing too many good smells to ignore, and us wandering around the neighborhood in a panic looking for our runaway boy. Other than that, he’s such a mellow fellow and regardless of what his brother Logan (from the A2 Cat Clinic) and sister Macy (from HSHV in 08) are doing, he just goes with the flow.

Our family has been enriched and we thank everyone there for making it full of fun, pleasure and love.
Thank you,
Catherine Pineau-Oishi

Hi HSHV:
I changed Toby's name to Blu. Being a blue pit and having crystal blue eyes, it seemed only natural. I flew him back to NYC (through Philadelphia) two days after Thanksgiving. He was so good - mellow, patient, quiet. He was only 18 lbs then and fit perfectly under the seat in front of me on the plane (picture provided). He's now over 30 lbs and the talk of the town. I have a dog walker that walks him twice a day and everybody in the neighborhood knows and loves him. He is very mild mannered and playful. He has only barked twice since I've had him. He gets along well with all dogs and is trying to make friends with my girlfriend's cats, but they're less interested in bonding with him. I work at Google and have brought him into the office a couple times to play with the other dogs and my coworkers. We're going to start training classes as soon as the weather gets a little warmer, but he knows the basic commands - sit, stay, down, come, etc. He's by far the most handsome pooch at the dog parks and gets distracted by all the varieties of dogs he can play with.
All in all, Blu's been a blessing. A lot of work having to apartment train him, but he's so worth it.

Hi!
I was writing you all to thank you for introducing us to Ralph and Carly! We first adopted Carly into our home and she just fit right in. She was energetic, cuddly, and playful! Not only that but she has been so healthy and strong :) Carly cannot get enough of us when we come home and loves attention. At night, though, Carly still wanted our attention when we needed sleep! So we decided she needed a buddy to keep her company when we weren't around and at night. Carly is such a people person, but we found she is an animal person too! We came back to the Humane Society where we then adopted Ralph. Ralph and Carly hit it off from the day they met. They had no trouble adjusting to the other one being there. They share everything and play with one another constantly. The best part is when they cuddle and one will lick the others face. At night you can hear them running through the hall playing together. They are so happy and we are so happy to have a big kitty family! Thank you for all you do!
Sincerely,
Julia Krause and Lonny Stewart
P.S WeI hope you like the picture :) Ralph is the white kitty and Carly is the brown fluffy one.

Eight weeks ago I adopted a two-and-a-half-year-old kitty named Tizzy from the Humane Society of Huron Valley. I got a lot of help from her foster mother, Patti Maki. Tizzy had been through a lot in her short life; she had had surgery for a terrible corneal abrasion on her left eye. Patti took care of her and put drops in her eye several times a day for several weeks before and after the surgery. Tizzy's eye finally healed, and other than looking a little cloudy, it's fine now. She seems to have sight in it.
I was looking for a kitty a little past the kitten stage. I'm a lonely old lady who was looking for a kitty who needed some lovin' as much as I did. Tizzy was a little shy at first, had to check her surroundings out. I did not push the relationship, and she has decided I'm here to love and please as she is doing for me!!! I told her she could call me "Mom," "Ma-ma," "Grand-ma," or "G-ma-ma," but she calls me "Meow," and that works. I respond!!
I would like to thank Patti and HSHV for helping me find her! Everyone was very knowledgeable and helpful.
Thank you,
Doris Thompson and "Tizzy" |

Hello,
I am just wanting to let you know how happy we are to have Fluffy (who we changed his name to Black Jack) and Jenga in our home. We adopted them in November of 2009. We were coming there to adopt one kitten, but ended up adopting two kittens to ensure that they each had a companion. We adopted our dog Olive (who we changed her name to Brooke) in September of 2007 through your facility also and she is such a wonderful friend and companion to our family. I love to take her for walks and she is by my side all the time. The the kittens get along so well together and with our dog and it is so fun to watch them play together. Each of the kittens take turns sleeping with Brooke and it is so cute when they do. Jenga thinks that Brooke is her mother. When I am petting Brooke, the kittens sit behind her while her tail is wagging, playing with it. The kittens are so funny the dog loves them and they love her. My daughter wanted a kitten for Christmas and now we have a family of pets who all get along and we love so much. It is hard to get pictures of them all together, but I am attaching a few photos of them in our home. Thank you for all you do for the animals.
Sincerely,
Tammy |

I adopted two adult cats, Lincoln (now Henry), and Bromley (now Mudge), several months ago and first met them in the HSHV community cat room in the old facility. They are not a natural pair, but knew one another at least a bit, from hanging out in the community cat room. They have bonded beautifully from the very first day. I did not need to separate them; they seemed to take comfort in one another, especially Mudge, who was more timid and frightened. Henry has been really social and relaxed from the start, even with my 4 year-old daughter, whom he not only tolerates, but seems to seek out! It took a month to even catch Mudge to get a collar on him, but he now is much more relaxed and seeks out petting from me. The sweetest thing is how they snuggle, bathe, and frolic with one another! They race and pounce and wrestle, and are the best of friends. I have not had cats in years, but didn't feel ready to bring another dog into our lives until my daughter is a little older. I'm grateful to provide a good home to two such sweet and social cats, who are the best of buddies.
Best,

To All of the Caring People at HSHV,
On Monday we adopted little Burt, the shih tzu. We have renamed him Maxwell (or Max for short). He has two doggie older sisters here named Mia and Maggie, so we thought Maxwell would fit right in for a name. He is just an absolute darling dog. He is so well mannered, polite, and pottie trained. He loves riding in the car, laying around watching TV, playing, examining our box of doggie toys, and checking things out around here. The first night with us he jumped right up on the bed and went to sleep at the foot of the bed. His shih tzu sister likes to sleep up there too, so it's nice and cuddly. Our little white Pekinese hangs out under the bed. Thanks for being so nice to him and cleaning him up so well. We are enjoying him greatly already and will love him forever!
Sincerely,
Laurel and Larry Brenner

Hey there,
Sarah and I have been remiss in writing this "Happy Tail", but I think that accumulating memories since August will have made this Happy Tail all the more genuine. When we first met Cherry at HSHV she was immediately personable, and noticeably quiet – two often mutually exclusive qualities. We walked her and she was calm – still we could feel her pit strength straining some at the harness; we played with her in a back room and she entertained both herself and us, alternating between throwing toys to herself and running over to us to get loved; we ran around with her in the large fenced-in play area, and she was fast and fun, beautiful to watch and exciting to engage. We knew we wanted her badly, that we could give her a wonderful, loving home, and she us a wonderful, loving friend.
It is almost five months later, and our love for Cherry grows daily. She is a goofball – running around the living room and the snow-covered fields with the same vigor, chasing her tail for ten minutes at a time, sleeping with her arms straight up in the air; and she is a sweetheart – wagging her tail tirelessly when we come home, kissing us when we wake up and when we go to sleep, and all hours in between, insisting she’s a lap dog and that she can always press herself closer to us (until either she or we or all of us collapse).
In addition to her limitless affection and personality around us, Cherry is terribly excited to meet new people and animals of all sizes. She has never growled, and she does not bark (but she does snore boldly). We are thrilled to be with Cherry as she matures and experiences more and more. We cannot stress enough that she is a sweety through and through. Thank you for introducing us.
Love,
Matt and Sarah |

Gertrude the Great Dane, she is now "Greta". She is a beautiful girl, she weighed 82lbs when we brought her home, skinny and sad. She was found and brought to you as a stray, as the story goes. No one claimed her, how that is, I don't know.
When I came upon her, she was hangin' on the couch of the adoption center, still drugged from spaying! You must have known she would soon be swept up! She was listed as a "wallflower", shy, not much into people she didn't know. She was also classified as an older dog, 5ish. Old for a Dane. Well, when I saw her, I was in love! She came home with me a week later!
I consulted a breeder in my area for tips on how to put weight on her safely, and she seems to think she is much younger than expected! GREAT! So here she is 1 1/2 yrs later, happy, couch potato! Oh, by the way, she is up to a healthy 107lbs!
She is great with my older dog, children and new people who come by the house. Thank you HSHV for the experience. I will always encourage people to adopt instead of "buy". Check out her before and after pix!

Dear HSHV,
We can't believe it's been a year since we adopted Mittens and Penny (aka Dottie and Checkers) from the shelter. We can't imagine not having them in our lives! They are so much fun! Mittens has a sweet and gentle personality. She likes to follow you around during the day, getting into whatever you are doing. She also loves chasing her tail and watching the washing machine. Penny can be a little overly active at times, but loves to sleep on your lap after she has worn herself out. She also enjoys playing with pipe cleaners and drinking water out of the sink. They are always playful with each other and run around the house whenever they can. Without them, life would be a lot more dreary because It's always great to cuddle with them whenever we are not in the best mood. We all love Mittens and Penny so very much, and hope to have bunches of fun with them in the future!
Thank you HSHV!

Back at the beginning of September I adopted a kitten, Lovey Dovey renamed Taffy. She was a sweet little ball of fur that loved to cuddle and talk. She has become great friends with my mother's shepherd, Casey. As you can see in the picture, they love to cuddle together. Taffy has been a wonderful addition to the family.
She keeps us all entertained.

Hello,
I adopted my cattle dog/lab mix Spike in August of 2005, and I wanted to send you an update. When I started traveling abroad for research, there was no way I could leave Spike behind, so he spent nine months with me in Prague, and now we're several months into a year-long stay in Paris. Spike doesn't like the flights, but because much of Europe has more relaxed rules about dogs, he's had all kinds of new experiences. Spike has mastered public transportation, done a little shopping with me, and spent many an hour in restaurants, cafes, and bars. He even went to a jazz concert in Prague on his birthday. Spike makes friends wherever he goes, and he helps me integrate into the local community through other dog owners. He's become an international ambassador for shelter dogs.
Thanks so much for bringing a wonderful dog--and travel companion--into my life.

We adopted a young dog back in november, and I am glad to say she has made a wonderful new addition to the family. Her name was formaly known as penny, but now the kids have renamed her to Calli, a fitting name she responds to well. I believe that there was someone in the office that allowed us to bring her home in spite of the fact that we could'nt bring are other dog in, for fear that they would'nt get along. I'm glad to say that they get along perfectly. And a hearty thank you from the whole family for alowwing us to do so. She is already house trained, no chewing on things except for her toys (and there are alot of toys from her first christmas ), she loves to run and play in the yard with Nieko for hours. Once again thank you.
