One aspect of our mission is to provide shelter for homeless animals. We receive hundreds of animals each month from throughout Washtenaw County. Some are stray or abandoned animals, animals given up their owners, sick or injured animals, or animals brought in by local animal control. We strive to reunite strays with their owners and place as many animals as possible into caring homes through our adoption program.  We also work with Friends of Wildlife, Bird Center of Washtenaw County, and various companion animal rescue groups. Our staff and volunteers provide food, shelter, medical treatment and individual attention to keep our animals happy, healthy and loved while they are in our care.

Pet Lost & Found

The Humane Society of Huron Valley is the only holding facility in Washtenaw County and Canton Township. We also receive many stray animals from surrounding counties.

If you have lost your pet, please do the following:

  • Call our shelter immediately to file a lost report.
  • Come to our shelter as soon as possible (during business hours) to look for your pet. Since descriptions of animals can vary, you'll want to come to our shelter every 2 days to look for your pet after filing a lost report.
  • To claim your pet, please bring:
    • A picture of you and your pet, veterinary records, or other proof that the animal we are sheltering is your pet.
    • Proof of a rabies vaccination.  We can vaccinate your pet for an additional charge, if necessary.
    • Proof of your dog license.
  • Be prepared to pay a $35 intake fee plus a board fee of $25 per day for each additional day your pet is here. You will also need to pay medical fees, if necessary.

By state law, a stray pet is held a minimum of four days, seven days if the pet has a collar or microchip/tag.  After the hold period the animal is evaluated for adoption. We attempt to place animals with adoption potential that are too young or need rehabilitation in our foster care program. There is no time limit or expiration date on adoptable animals.  An animal may remain here as long as it is healthy, temperamentally sound, and we have room for it. As a last resort, unadoptable animals are humanely euthanized.  We do not sell animals to research.

In order to reunite pets and owners as quickly as possible, we also offer identification tags and microchip implants for a low fee. Check out our Clinic for more information.

Surrendering a companion animal to us

If you can no longer keep your animal you may bring it to us, but you should do so only as a last resort. We cannot guarantee that your animal will be adopted and we cannot guarantee it will not be euthanized. If you choose to surrender your animal to us, please download, fill out, and bring the Owned Pet Information form with your pet and any available veterinarian records to our shelter. Please come to the Animal Intake door during the hours of 10:00am – 5:30pm, 7 days a week.

If you live within Washtenaw County, there is a $20 fee to surrender your pet, unless for age, health or temperament reasons it is known to be unadoptable. In such unadoptable cases, there is an euthanasia fee.

If you reside outside of Washtenaw County (proof of residency is required), there is a minimum fee of $35 to surrender your companion animal to HSHV.

Bringing a stray companion animal to us

We will accept any stray animal from Washtenaw County.  There is no set fee, but donations are welcomed

If you are outside of Washtenaw County (proof of residency is required), it is best to contact the shelter in your county to increase the animals’ chance of being reunited with its family.  For a listing of other shelters serving counties in Southeast Michigan click here.  If you are outside of Washtenaw County, there is a minimum fee of $35 to bring a stray animal to HSHV.

There is no fee to bring us a stray animal from Washtenaw County, although donations to cover the cost of care for the animal are greatly appreciated.
