Microchip Your Pet
Millions of dogs become lost each year. Tragically, few are reunited with their owners. Many lost dogs end up in shelters where they are adopted out to new homes or even euthanized. It is important that your dog has identification at all times. Collars and tags are essential, but they can fall off or become damaged. Technology has made it possible to equip your pet with a microchip for permanent identification.

One aspect of our mission is to provide shelter for homeless animals. We receive hundreds of animals each month from throughout Washtenaw County. Some are stray or abandoned animals, animals given up their owners, sick or injured animals, or animals brought in by local animal control. We strive to reunite strays with their owners and place as many animals as possible into caring homes through our adoption program.
We also work with Friends of Wildlife, Bird Center of Washtenaw County, and various companion animal rescue groups. Our staff and volunteers provide food, shelter, medical treatment and individual attention to keep our animals happy, healthy and loved while they are in our care.
Pet Lost & Found
The Humane Society of Huron Valley is the only holding facility in Washtenaw County and Canton Township. We also receive many stray animals from surrounding counties.
If you have lost your pet, please do the following:
- Call our shelter immediately to file a lost report.
- Post a picture and information on our FREE Lost & Found Board
- Come to our shelter as soon as possible (during business hours) to look for your pet. Since descriptions of animals can vary, you'll want to come to our shelter every 2 days to look for your pet after filing a lost report.
Claim Your Pet Being Held at HSHV
By state law, a stray pet is held a minimum of four days, seven days if the pet has a collar or microchip/tag. After the hold period the animal is evaluated for adoption. We attempt to place animals with adoption potential that are too young or need rehabilitation in our foster care program. There is no time limit or expiration date on adoptable animals. An animal may remain here as long as it is healthy, temperamentally sound, and we have room for it. As a last resort, unadoptable animals are humanely euthanized. We do not sell animals to research.
In order to reunite pets and owners as quickly as possible, we also offer identification tags and microchip implants for a low fee. Check out our Clinic for more information.
