Why Barn Cats?
Some cats who end up at HSHV cannot adapt to indoor living. They may be:
- feral (born and raised in the wild)
- under-socialized cats who prefer little to no human contact
- friendly cats who just cannot adjust to an in-home environment
Whatever the reason, when cats are not not appropriate for traditional in-home adoptions, we still believe they deserve a happy life and that they can be placed with families that value them as much as we do. The HSHV Barn Cat Program was started for just these types of cats.
Adopting a barn cat can be a mutually beneficial relationship - you will be saving the life of a healthy cat, while they will help scare off small, pesky rodents! To people that qualify, barn cat adoption is FREE.
Barn cats are:
- Up-to-date on vaccinations
How to adopt a barn cat
You'll need to provide:
- Safe, permanent shelter with an area of weather-proof covering
- A continuous supply of fresh food and water
- Veterinary care should they require it
- Acclimation time and area:
To ensure the cats acclimate tand do not run away, they must be kept in a large homing crate in their new environment for a minimum of 3 weeks. Then they should be given free range of their new home. Don't have a large crate? Ask us about providing one. Read more on how to acclimate barn cats here.
We strongly recommend having 2 or more barn cats because they keep each other company and can huddle together for warmth in cold weather.
To qualify for a free barn cat adoption, please complete this online application. We will contact you within 2 business days. You may also print off this survey, complete and mail it to: HSHV Barn Buddies, 3100 Cherry Hill Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 41805.

Please note: This program is for cats in our shelter. HSHV does not accept or take in feral cats. Please do not bring them to the shelter. If you have outside/feral cats and live in Washtenaw County, please call (734) 661-3523 or email email@example.com to discuss your options.
