Volunteering at HSHV is a very rewarding experience! There are many roles you can play to aid the mission of the Humane Society of Huron Valley. As a nonprofit, private organization committed to finding permanent homes for the animals in our care and preventing cruelty to animals, we need the help of many volunteers to get our work done. You must be 18 or older for volunteer positions requiring direct contact with the animals. If you are 16-17 years old, you may volunteer for other activities.  If you are 12-15 years old, you may volunteer working directly with a parent. For further information please call our Volunteer Hotline at 734-662-5585, x300 or email volunteer@hshv.org.

All volunteers must first attend the Volunteer Orientation.  Please click to view the orientation schedule for dates. For some volunteer positions additional training may be required.

As a volunteer you can:

You must be 18 years or older to work directly with the animals.

By giving your talents, you can supplement the skills and work of our staff. What are your special skills or training? How can they be put to use for the mission of our Humane Society? Let our Volunteer Coordinator know. email volunteer@hshv.org.

In the Shelter.

  • Kennel Help
    • Help the staff with the daily cleaning of the shelter, doing dishes, laundry and cleaning litter pans. You can be of help in this area any day of the week!
  • Dog Walking ~ Cat Cuddling ~ Grooming
    • Spend time with individual animals: walking dogs, comforting cats, grooming and brushing. If the animals are happy to see people, they are more adoptable. A groomed appearance is also helpful - and more comfortable! This job requires training.
  • Grounds
    • Let us put your green thumb and aesthetics to use! We have several flower beds which could use a bit more loving care than they currently receive. Weeding, mulching, trimming... if you like this kind of work, you can help keep HSHV a pleasant place for the eyes.

At Home, Foster Program.

  • Foster Parent
    • HSHV needs foster homes to provide temporary housing to animals that can not stay in our shelter. These animals may be too young to be adopted, injured or sick and need time to get healthy for adoption, or have special needs that require behavior training or socialization.

At Special Events or Fundraising.

  • Canister program
    • HSHV has donation canisters at numerous businesses in Washtenaw County. If you are able to regularly pick up donations from businesses or know of other businesses which would allow us to place a canister, let us know!
  • Walk & Wag
    • This annual event (next date is May 17, 2008) is one of our most important fundraisers. Hundreds of people and pets participate. Each walker collects pledges from family, friends, neighbors and businesses. It is a fun-filled day organized by dedicated volunteers, and we can always use more! Volunteers for this event help collect prizes and sponsorships, staff the checkpoints, handle registration, sell merchandise, run games and more!
  • Photography
    • At times we need people to photograph our special events.
  • Holiday Gift Wrapping
    • We need lots of help this holiday season, November and December, for gift wrapping at local stores. So if you need a kick-start to get into the holiday spirit this is the activity for you. Or bring a few friends and rap while you're wrapping! Many shifts available.

In the Community.

  • Community Activities
    • We need volunteers to represent HSHV at community events - festivals, parades, fairs and other occasions.  If you are passionate about HSHV and love to share our mission, we need you.

Community Service.

Court-Ordered Community Service

The Humane Society of Huron Valley accepts some types of court-ordered community service volunteers. Volunteers must be 18 years old and provide documentation of the court requirements along with the name and phone number of the case worker or probation officer. Court-ordered community service volunteers do not work directly with the animals. Volunteer tasks include shelter cleaning and clerical work. All court-ordered community service volunteers hours must schedule their hours with the volunteer coordinator by call 734-662-5585 x-300.
