Barn cats

Some cats cannot adapt to indoor living. They may be feral or under-socialized and prefer little to no human contact. Whatever the reason, we believe all cats deserve a happy life and can be placed with families who value them as much as we do.

This program is for cats in our shelter.

HSHV does not accept or take in feral cats. For unowned outdoor cats in Washtenaw County, see our Community Cats program. To bring in a domesticated cat, please see our "Bringing in Animals."

Save a life. Adopt a barn cat.

Cats used to be killed for no other reason than they couldn't live indoors. Yet not every cat is suited to life indoors, and cats have lived outdoors for thousands of years.

Why adopt a barn cat?

Green pest control

Barn cats are working cats! They provide a natural, chemical-free form of rodent control, helping keep mice and other pests in check.

Spayed/neutered and vaccinated

All cats available for adoption have been spayed/neutered (so no surprise kittens!) and are up-to-date on vaccines.

FREE adoption

To people who qualify, barn cat adoption is free.

Twice as nice

We strongly recommend 2 or more barn cats because they keep each other company and can huddle for warmth in cold weather. Since each cat is unique, HSHV can’t guarantee anything about temperament. Some may never want human contact; others may seek attention.

For a free barn cat, you provide

  • Safe, permanent shelter with an area of weather-proof covering
  • Continuous fresh food and water
  • Veterinary care when needed
  • A carrier to get your cat home in
  • Acclimation crate, time and area

To ensure your cats acclimate and do not run away, they must be kept in a large homing crate in their new environment for a minimum 3 weeks, after which they can have free range. We’re sorry; we do not have any crates to lend.
