Lost + found

Despite how careful you are, sometimes a friend wanders off. HSHV is Washtenaw County’s only stray animal holding facility, and we are always ready to assist owners with finding their pets, as well as those who have found a stray animal running loose without their owner.

Lost Found Contact2

Think your pet may be at our shelter?

Call (734) 661-3545 immediately. Strays are typically held for 4-7 days before being placed up for adoption.

Find your pet after filing a report?

Please call (734) 661-3545 or email lostandfound@hshv.org to let us know.

While there may be money owed when you claim your pet, HSHV will not call you and demand money in advance. You can pay any fees at the shelter when you pick your pet up.

Steps to finding your animal

Every detail helps bring a pet home. Complete a report, check for possible matches, and keep looking nearby while our team helps search for a match. We welcome you to come to our shelter; hours are at the bottom of this page.

1. Complete a report

File a lost or found animal report with as much detail as possible. Reports may take up to 24 hours to appear on our website.

If you have a photo, please include it with your report or email it to us later with your name and the animal’s name so we can add it to the correct report.

Reports expire after 90 days. To extend a report, call (734) 661-3545 or email lostandfound@hshv.org.

2. Check for matches

Look through animals reported lost, animals reported found, and animals currently at HSHV. We’ll check for possible matches, too, but no one will recognize your pet faster or better than you. We also welcome you to visit; our Intake department is open from 9-5, 7 days/week.

Please check back often, since new reports and animals may be added.

3. Keep looking + notify neighbors

Lost pets may be scared and hiding nearby, even if they know you. Let neighbors know, and ask them to check garages, sheds, porches, window wells, and other quiet hiding places.

If the animal was lost or found near the border of Washtenaw County, Plymouth, or Northville City—or outside our service area—please also contact your local stray hold facility.

4. Spot a match?

If you see an animal you think may be yours, or one you think may match the pet you found, call us right away at (734) 661-3545.
