Helping children with their reading skills and animals at the same time!

Want a fun way for your child to practice reading skills? On Sundays from 10-11:30 a.m. and select Wednesdays from 1:30-3 p.m., youth are invited to read to the adoptable animals at HSHV. Each Rescue Reading program also includes a humane education lesson, and time for a group read-aloud and a dog meet-and-greet.

This is a drop-off event designed for ages 6-11. Have children under 6? Check out Storytime!

When: Every Sunday from 10-11:30 a.m. and select Wednesdays from 1:30-3 p.m. Pre-registration is required.

Fee: $10 per child (We’re sorry – due to the popularity of this program, all fees are non-refundable and registration cannot be transferred to other dates. Please reach out to us if your child needs to miss due to illness.)

Books: While we have many books available, we’d love to have your child bring several books to read during the session that are at his/her reading level.

COVID-19 procedures: At this time, we’re limiting this to no more than 8 children per session. Each child will be required to wear a facial covering during the program. Upon arrival, parents will be asked to agree to a statement, attesting that their child is not exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19. Staff will assist with sanitizing children’s hands throughout the program.

We’re sorry; due to social distancing requirements, we are unable to have parents attend this program with their children. If you’d like to enjoy time with your child while reading to the animals, we invite you to visit our cat cafe, the Tiny Lions lounge and adoption Center.
