I didn’t have any particular plans to adopt, but I saw these adorable kittens with white socks on the HSHV website, and knew I had to go meet them! The rest—as they say—is history. Nelson and Hardy are almost a year old now and love to sprint after laser pointers and cuddle together on all the chairs in the house. They make coming home the best part of my day, and I’ll always be grateful to HSHV for bringing them to me! Beagle and Dane, now Nelson and Hardy

Foster fail
Juice …this poor boy came to us May of 2017, literally cowering in the back of his cage. We fostered him and his twin brother and called them the ” cheesy poofs.” My daughter was so attached, as was he to her, so we adopted. I was at peace with him never being ” my cat.. Surprise! This soft, sweet, introverted boy spends 21 hours a day in my room. He loves other animals but young men not so much. He makes muffins and is a gentle, undemanding presence. He encourages quiet and peace in the house (or he hides).

Mr. Pete, Gentle Giant!
After more than 5 months, Mr. Pete (“Marion” @ HSHV) has finally gained some courage. He overcame profound fear, living under our bed for his first 2 months with us, and spent the next 2 months in cautious, limited forays beyond that safety zone. From the start Mr. Pete delivered melodious purr-chortles, head-butts, and love nibbles when flushed out from under the bed, but retreated back there after only 10 minutes of adoration from me and my husband. He particularly bonded to my husband in early fearful days, nearly glued to his body, unbudgeable. Since those early days, Mr. Pete

Mini Golden Retreiver
When my beloved Hannah (Golden Retriever) died in 2011, I knew I wanted another one eventually. She was my second GR, and I loved their personality and how smart and intuitive they are. So, I started looking. Of course, one of my favorite places to check was HSHV. I checked several times. My granddaughter came with me a couple of times…my son as well. One day as I was strolling through, I found a little blonde dog leaning up against her cage. So sad and so afraid and so alone. I immediately asked about her and found out she was

Our Buddy
When we adopted Blue (formerly Rusty) from HSHV, he was frightened to death. It took me 3 hours to get him out of my car at home. His story was that he was abandoned by his former owner, taken in by friends for a night before being surrendered to HSHV. Today, he is our buddy. He has taken two classes at HSHV, reactive rover and basic manners. He now loves cuddles at night, snowy playtime in the backyard, and chasing our Roomba around the house. We can’t imagine our life without him. Rusty now Blue

Corny’s fresh start
When I first saw Corndog on the HSHV website, I instantly fell in love with the little guy. Corndog got adopted, and my heart was both happy for him and broken at the same time. But when they brought him back after only two days, I knew that little guy had to come home with me. We became the best of friends instantly. Adoption date, 10/8/2018

One year ago today
One year ago today, I adopted Finnegan. He has done more than a few tours through the shelter. Finnegan has been the light of my life bringing smiles and laughter every day. He has been to three training classes and was always top of his class and a favorite of his teachers ? He is a Mr. Smartypants and has really come a long way. He trusts me, and that helps a lot. He even lets me cut his hair LOL. He loves his momma, and his momma loves him to pieces. Don’t know what I’d do without him. He

Love at first Site
In July 2018, my husband and I stopped by Tiny Lions and the HSHV while driving town with only the intent of playing with the kitties. I saw Norah (formerly Rosebud) and fell in love with her immediately! Though she was initially timid, she is now completely at home in our family! She loves following and mimicking her big brother Wayne, chasing sparkly toys around the house, chirping at my husband, and sleeping on her favorite fleece blanket. We can’t imagine life without this beautiful, energetic, and cuddly girl! Rosebud now Norah

5 ways to help furry friends in frigid temperatures
Brrr… it’s cold outside! Here are 5 tips on helping our four-legged friends when the temperature dips. Bring them in. If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them! Just like people, animals are subject to frostbite — especially on paws and ears. And also just like people, our elderly and very young pets are the most vulnerable. Keep them indoors as much as possible. Gimme shelter. Make sure animals who live outdoors have a wind-free shelter; warm, dry bedding (e.g., plenty of straw); and extra food and fresh (not frozen) water. If animals don’t have fresh water to drink,
