Ann Arbor, MI (August 19, 2026) — The Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) has rescued 149 cats from four local homes within only two months. In late June, HSHV rescued 43 cats from a Manchester, Michigan home after the resident reached out to the shelter for help. At the beginning of July, HSHV responded to a call regarding a reportedly abandoned home in Ypsilanti. Rescue Officers arrived to find 17 cats living in highly unsanitary conditions among garbage, feces, urine, and a number of deceased cats and kittens. The situation remains under investigation. At the end of July, HSHV took

“We’re at CATpacity:” Adopt free at HSHV
With a number of recent rescues involving large numbers of cats, we need to make room! For a limited time, we’re waiving the adoption fees on adult cats and barn cats. Adult cats and working barn cats are available for no adoption fee. For those who wonder whether waiving adoption fees means pets are placed less carefully, animal welfare research says otherwise. Multiple studies have found fee-waived adoption promotions successfully increase lifesaving, without compromising quality of homes. HSHV continues to use the same adoption counseling and matching process, and research has shown that pets adopted during free adoption events remain

Ann Arbor Alleged Cat Shooter’s Case Dismissed
Ann Arbor, MI (June 17, 2026) — Following an investigation by the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV), and criminal charges of animal abuse filed against Ann Arbor resident George White, the case was dismissed on Tuesday, May 26. The charges stemmed from a 2024 HSHV investigation when a cat in Ypsilanti was discovered suffering from multiple penetrating wounds consistent with being shot by a BB gun. Veterinary examinations and X-rays revealed numerous BBs lodged throughout the cat’s body. The cat named “Sugar” had approximately 35 BB pellets alone embedded in her small frame and had to have several removed. Despite her

Ann Arbor, MI (May 29, 2026) — The Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) is warning the community about the dangers of inhumane and indiscriminate wildlife traps and treatment following a series of disturbing cruelty investigations — including the death of a beloved family cat named Bucky. In one case, a man was charged with illegal animal cruelty after deliberately setting a woodchuck on fire. In another, a raccoon was left in a live trap for a week by a well-known nuisance control company

Who can we trust with our pets?
I want to share something that’s been weighing on me because pet parents deserve honesty. There has been a shift in the veterinary field, and its consequences for animals and the people who love them are serious. You may have noticed that veterinary medicine used to feel different. It was local. Relational. Not perfect but built on trust that the person treating your pet was guided by medical judgment and compassion — not corporate growth targets. Over the past decade, the veterinary industry has been quietly but rapidly consolidated by corporate giants and private equity firms. An estimated 25–30% of

HSHV Highlights Risk to Pets When Owners Are Suddenly Taken or Hospitalized
Ann Arbor, MI (February 3, 2026) — Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) reminds the community of the critical role neighbors play in protecting animals, after staff were alerted by a hospital social worker that a recently adopted dog had been left alone when his adopter was unexpectedly hospitalized following an encounter with federal immigration officers. Unfortunately, the worried owner was not permitted to contact HSHV himself, nor did any law enforcement agency notify HSHV. Thankfully, the dog was safely recovered by HSHV staff and is back in HSHV’s care—only because a hospital social worker thought to call HSHV. This story

Happy Gotcha Day, Nigel!
It was a cold day in late January 2024 and I talked my husband into going with me to HSHV to look at dogs. We were down to one dog and he seemed lonely after losing his buddies over the years. We didn’t plan to go home with a dog that day (or my husband didn’t), but that’s not how things played out. I was out “test driving” another dog and my husband was back in the kennel. When I came back in, he said, “I found our dog.” Apparently, as my husband knelt down next to the kennel, Nigel

Ypsilanti, MI (January 15, 2026) — The Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) continues to investigate the alleged abuse of a dog captured on a doorbell camera in Ypsilanti during the last week of 2025. An anonymous donor is now offering $1,000 cash for information leading to the filing of criminal charges in the case. The video, recorded on Ypsilanti’s South Street, appears to show a man running onto a porch, grabbing a dog with light-colored fur, striking the dog several times, then lifting and dragging the dog by the neck while walking down the steps off the porch. In the
