Christina and PCEP Key Club: Youth committed to helping animals

Christina recently started volunteering at HSHV and wanted to help make some different types of dog enrichment for the dogs to enjoy. She is a board member on her after school Key Club group, and she suggested they make braided dog toys. It was very successful, and now the dogs of HSHV are going to enjoy some fun new toys. Silver Springs Girl Scout Daisy Troop: Animal journey

The girls of the Silver Springs Girl Scout Daisy Troop sold cookies and used some of their proceeds to buy fleece to make animal blankets. They made many cat blankets, dog blankets, bandannas, and cat toys. The girls are working on an animal journey that focuses on the care of companion animals. Adopter beware:  The word “rescue” may not mean what you think it means.

Recently the Washington Post investigated the alarming practice of so-called “rescue” groups buying puppies at auction from commercial breeders, known as puppy mills. Here’s what we know about the puppy mill industry:  Nearly all pups that come from a commercial breeder are the result of emotional and physical torture. Lindsay Reasons, DVM

Shelter Veterinarian Companion Animals – Michigan State University Dr. Reasons is a career changer. In her previous life, she worked as a CPA for a small firm in Michigan. But the veterinary field has always been her calling.  She earned her DVM from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2019. Her special interests include integrative and behavior medicine, and how she can incorporate those into a shelter setting. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with her husband, daughter and two “foster fail” cats.
