Ann Arbor, MI (July 17, 2024) – To alleviate the strain of an overflowing shelter and find families for homeless animals, Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) is currently participating in “Empty the Shelters,” a national adoption event sponsored by the Bissell Pet Foundation.
And one senior pup is taking matters into his own paws.
Tiki, an incredibly sweet 10-year-old stray dog found in Washtenaw County, has escaped the shelter – twice.
Because HSHV is so full, he was housed in a staff office—typically considered a nice place for an animal to stay.
“He was put in his crate in the office when staff left for the evening. Somehow, he got out of the crate, opened the office door, then walked out our front doors,” said Tanya Hilgendorf, HSHV’s CEO. “Only to happily greet one of our veterinarians in the parking lot at 6 a.m.”
The second time, concerned staff had taken extra precautions to keep him secured in the crate and in the office. But he still “Houdinied” himself out of both, and with a wagging tail strolled out the front doors as seen on security footage.
The friendly fellow was soon found and returned by Good Samaritans at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens.
“Tiki is now safely secured back at HSHV and has an interested adopter. We hope he gets a home quickly—one prepared for a laid-back but clever older gent who wants to be someone’s loving and constant companion,” says Hilgendorf. “He has some special needs, but he is a very good boy.”
Now through July 31, adopting an adult cat or dog (over 6 months of age) at HSHV is only $50, thanks to sponsorship from BISSELL Pet Foundation.
- HSHV in Ann Arbor is participating in “Empty the Shelters,” offering $50 adoption fees for animals six months and older; “Gold Hearts” animals are free. The promotion ends July 31.
- HSHV is open 7 days a week starting at 11 a.m., and no appointments needed
- All animals have been spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated
