About the Family Day of Service program

What is it and when is it offered? Offered on select Sundays from 10-12pm. throughout the year, this 2-hour program includes education about HSHV, shelter tour, a humane education lesson (geared toward age 5-11), a meet-and-greet with an adoptable animal, and hands-on volunteer time.

Who can participate? Up to 3 family members of all ages (for each registration we ask that there is at least 1 adult age 18 and older), though our Humane Education lessons are most applicable to youth age 5-11 years. We ask that there is at least one adult (age 18+) per 2 children. For groups under age of 18, please see our JV program.

What will we be doing? While projects are based on our shelter’s need at the time, your family will be able to choose from two project options: either animal enrichment or an adopter “thank you” project. With the exception of the animal meet-and-greet, there is no handling or direct contact with our animals during the event. See our individual volunteer program, that includes animal handling training, for that.

Is there a fee, and what’s included? To cover the cost of materials, background check (ensuring no convictions related to abuse, violence, fraud or theft), staff time, and to support the work of HSHV, we charge a nominal fee of $30 per family (up to 3 participants) and $5 per additional child (babies under 1 year are free), due at registration. We’ll also provide your group with light snacks, coffee and water that day!

What should we wear? Please wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. For your safety, we require closed-toed shoes, even in summer.

How do we sign up? The program is currently on hold, but please check back for upcoming Family Days of Service!

What if we need to cancel? Please contact our Volunteer Manager. Cancellations received more than 60 days prior to your scheduled date can be refunded in full. We regret that cancellations made fewer than 60 days before your family’s scheduled date cannot be refunded.
