The Fox and the Hound

After months of secret preparation and planning, we took my 7yo daughter for a birthday trip to HSHV. She thought we were going somewhere she could play with puppies. Her face when we told her she could pick one to bring home was something straight out of a Hallmark movie. Her dad and I had already looked through the Love Train post of pups that would be available that morning and had a list of the top few smaller pups we thought we were interested in. Rookie mistake on our part. She looked around the room and bee-lined to the

Teddy’s Law:  The good, the bad, and what we should do next

Teddy’s Law, recently signed into law by the Governor, was drafted so that dogs and cats used in laboratories can be adopted, instead of killed, when no longer of use. Big thanks to the lead sponsors, Senators Hertel and Polehanki, for working their hearts out to save animals who sacrifice so much. However, there were changes made before final passage that need our attention. Two bills were written to create Teddy’s Law: HB 148 requiring basic reporting on the number of animals used and released for adoption HB 149 requiring adoptions of research dogs & cats when no longer of

Orange Kitty Finds a New Girlfriend

10 years ago we moved to a property with 4 1/2 acres and several outbuildings. We decided it was time to add cats back into our lives so we adopted barn cats. When you feed cats outside you can end up with more cats. One of the strays who wandered in was a large orange and white “feral” male. Eventually he warmed up to us and I named him Orange Kitty. He made friends with a long-haired, senior tortie, Isabella, who was part of our barn crew. They became a great couple and I would find them snuggled up together

Our gift from above

Just before our lovely snow storm on January 12th, our family (Josh and Kassie) decided it was a perfect day to make another trip to HSHV. Here’s a little backstory. Josh and I had our first dog together two years ago. His name was Blu Barry, he was an Alaskan Malmute/Boxer mix and was just a year old when we got the unfortunate diagnosis of large cell lymphoma. Two months after his diagnosis, Blu passed peacefully after our tremendous attempts with chemo. After he passed we knew our hearts longed for another companion but it just had to be the
