Ann Arbor, MI (June 17, 2026) — Following an investigation by the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV), and criminal charges of animal abuse filed against Ann Arbor resident George White, the case was dismissed on Tuesday, May 26.
The charges stemmed from a 2024 HSHV investigation when a cat in Ypsilanti was discovered suffering from multiple penetrating wounds consistent with being shot by a BB gun. Veterinary examinations and X-rays revealed numerous BBs lodged throughout the cat’s body. The cat named “Sugar” had approximately 35 BB pellets alone embedded in her small frame and had to have several removed. Despite her injuries, she survived after receiving medical treatment and care through HSHV. Soon thereafter, another cat later named “Gelato” was found with penetrating wounds also.
The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office authorized charges against the owner of both cats, George White. White has multiple prior convictions, including domestic violence, and allegedly shot at his cats in the home. Investigators found BBs on a cat tree and in the walls of the residence.
“These sweet kitties likely endured extreme pain and fear,” said Tanya Hilgendorf, CEO of Humane Society of Huron Valley. “No animal should suffer deliberate violence. We are grateful to everyone who helped bring this case forward, and we hope to prevent such horrible acts on others.”
A witness of the abuse refused to testify, citing fear of retribution. The case was dismissed “without prejudice,” meaning if the witness comes forward again, the case can be reopened.
“White’s criminal history reflects the well-documented link between violence toward animals and violence toward people. We understand why witnesses may be afraid to come forward. Holding offenders accountable is important not only for animal victims, but for the safety and wellbeing of our entire community,” Hilgendorf said.
Both cats were treated and cared for at HSHV until they were adopted, together, into a loving home.
HSHV encourages anyone who suspects animal cruelty or neglect in Washtenaw County to report it by calling (734) 661-3512 or submitting information online at hshv.org/report.
