Happy accidental walk

We were ready for a dog and wanted to adopt from the HSHV. We knew we could only visit three dogs per trip so we did our research and saw a few small dogs available at the humane society. When we walked two of the smaller dogs, they were a little chaotic for our small house. Then Zeus just happened to be walking by with a volunteer. He was so well behaved and the cutest boy! We took our third and final visit of the day to walk Zeus and it was love at first walk. We adopted him that

puppies help us heal

Almost a year after the passing of our 10 year old “matriarch” dog, my best friend forwarded an email from HSHV to me about a litter of “Irish Setter/Pit Bull” puppies available. This was my dream combo after growing up with Irish Setters and then falling in love with Pit Bulls as an adult. When I met the tiny fawn puppy named Pluto, she and I hung out in an outdoor kennel. When I realized that she was more interested in the biggest dogs being walked past than in me, I told her that I had a very special big

Never a Dull Moment!!!

We lost our beloved Cadenza about 11 years ago- the saddest day of my life and I vowed NEVER to go through “that” again. We were petless and the house felt empty. Fast forward, ….Our youngest granddaughter, Rachel, volunteered at the Humane Society some 4 years later and invited my husband and me to visit her and see her at work… She worked with the kittens, she told us. (You may guess the end of this story- but read on). We agreed to visit and vowed NEVER to bring home another cat. Upon walking into the lobby there was a

Crab Rangoon comes out of her shell!

When I first adopted this little orange kitty, she was described as new and nervous; she would hardly move, except to occasionally make biscuits in her bed. On top of being a bit timid, she had a really nasty URI that landed her in the ER within the first two days of adoption. She was certainly a crusty kitty in need of some TLC! I was worried that she wouldn’t make it, and many friends and family quietly believed she wouldn’t. But once she got the care she needed, Shell showed her true colors and blossomed into the wild orange

Roxy finds her rock

Before we even talk about our story, let’s talk about Roxy’s. She was a rescue, and we don’t know much about her past except for how she had been returned to the Humane Society many times, and not many owners kept her for long. She used to be required to be in a home with more dogs than just her, and she has separation anxiety. I can see why. She used to be a front desk dog at the Humane Society, but that’s all I can remember. When we were first about to take her home, the staff came to

Henry gets a second chance

This past fall I decided it was finally time to get my 1 year old cat Arthur a friend, and so I drove to HSHV determined to leave with a sibling for him. I had a specific idea in mind for what I was looking for in a second cat. I wanted an older cat (I got Arthur as a kitten and as cute as they are, I know older cats have a harder time getting adopted and wanted to give one a home) and they needed to be extremely friendly/social to match Arthur’s energy. I looked through the rooms

And then God gives you Lemon

One week after I lost my beloved cat of 14 years, Oreo, through my tears I saw a picture of Lemon. My friends and I got in the car and drove to HSHV. Lemon came right up to me at the front of the cage and didn’t give my other two friends the time of day. She was the one for me. My friend asked me if I wanted to look around more. I said “no” and headed to the front desk to adopt Lemon. (3-25-24) I was prepared to give Lemon (now called Ana) weeks to adjust. After 30

8 year old adopts cat, 10 years later he’s still by her side as she graduates.

When I was 8 years old, this would have been 2014, I went into the humane society with my mom to look for a pet cat. In the corner of the main area was a cage with a small tabby kitten surround by people. Because of the crowd we decided to not stop there and continue to look at other cats, but as I didn’t find a cat I connected with we decided to go. But as we were on our way out we noticed not a single person was at the cage anymore. Curious, I went to look and

Link stole our hearts

My partner and I used to visit HSHV at least once a week to see all the animals, and we had been thinking about getting a cat for a while, but wanted to wait till we found the right cat for us. One day we went as usual and we didn’t have any intention of coming home with a pet that day, but when we saw Ronaldo (now Link) in his cage we instantly knew he’d be ours! He was the sweetest boy from the very beginning, allowing lots of pets and wanting to play. All of the staff were

A Diamond in the Ruff

My wife and I adopted Baby (now named Molly) this past February. Molly came to HSHV at only 71 lbs. for a dog of her size, with ribs prominent through her torso. We were told she was a fearful 2-year-old with little human interaction. When we met Molly, her eyes were droopy, her fur was an ashy, dull color, and her face looked fearful, anxious, and sad. Her cataracts further amplified her fear as she had difficulty seeing. Despite all of this, the great volunteers at HSHV used patience and compassion to draw her out of her shell little by
