From high energy to lovable best friend

We were almost convinced into NOT adopting him because he was high energy and put on meds for anxiety, but Kane is fun loving, playful, smart and loves his new family 💖 Loves to play ball and keeps us fit and entertained. From camping to car rides to walks at the park, he has adjusted WITHOUT drugs…just love time and patience. Samuel now Kane

One Year with Vaughn!

Tomorrow is our one year anniversary of adopting Vaughn, a shy pit bull mix who immediately stole our hearts. He’s still very shy, but he has come such a long way since we first adopted him. He LOVES his family and his personality really shines around us. He has a greyhound sister who he loves cuddling with on the couch and running with outside! He loves getting scratches, pawing at us for more. He loves to cuddle with me on the couch, sometimes climbing on top of me for maximum coziness. I work at a dog daycare, and he goes

Sid is making himself at home!

When I first visited Sid he was very anxious and would not let me touch him for several days. Once I brought him home, he was a totally different dog. Sid spends his days cuddling with me and playing with his toys (when he’s not napping). Thank you so much for taking care of him. He really is a good boy.

Lucy gets her groove back

Lucy is a typical sassy and smart husky! Understandably, she was a bit timid at first as her and her brothers came to HSHV after their owner was in a tragic accident. At first it was difficult to differentiate what was fear versus stubbornness, having to initially carry her down/up stairs (now she FLIES down them). She spends her days on long walks, playing with other dogs, annoying her cat siblings, taking long naps, solving puzzles for treats, and defiantly staying outside when it’s time to come in. She has yet to figure out how to escape the yard, but

A Year with Lucy

My husband and I adopted Lucy (formerly Suzie) one year ago today! Last year, our house seemed so empty and quiet after our sweet golden retriever died the year before, we became empty nesters, and my husband retired. Not having a lot of experience with dogs, we were looking to adopt a retriever-type dog, and one finally popped up on the website. When we met Suzie that weekend, we fell in love and brought her home the same day. We renamed her Lucy and got down to business getting to know this dog. She is super smart and well behaved,

Destined to be besties

I didn’t exactly plan to adopt Kailua (Marco Chopper) and Forest (Bear) when I went for a visit, but I fell in love. Both of these boys had a rough start to life, with a variety of medical issues, but our vet set everyone right, and all is well now. Kailua and Forest weren’t a bonded pair when they left HSHV together, but they are now. They hate to be apart, and if Forest doesn’t know where Kai is at any time, he begins to cry loudly until Kai pops in to let him know he’s still there. They wrestle

Sasha’s forever home

I adopted Sasha (formerly Felicity) May 30th. I had started volunteering at HSHV in February and she was one of the first dogs to catch my eye, but I wasn’t ready for a dog yet. When she was still there in May I knew I had to adopt her. I had originally planned on keeping her name, but it was a mouthful and she wasn’t very responsive to it. Over the past couple of months she has definitely come out her shell; she’s very playful (loves to be chased), loving, affectionate and will demand pets. Most of the time when

Safe, loved, and silly!

I met Remy (then Dilemma) one Friday after work. I spent the next week thinking about him and showing his picture to friends and coworkers, debating if it was the right time to get another cat. My old cat had died a few months before and I wasn’t sure I would ever get another. But something about Remy just kept calling to me. The next Friday, I came right over after work and asked to meet him. He leaned his head right into mine, and I knew he was mine. I came to pick him up the next morning. He’s

Went for one kitten & came home with two!

My children and I came in to look at the kittens and instantly fell in love with little Dorito and Tostito (now Leo and Oreo)! We had the intention of only getting one kitten but couldn’t separate these cuddly brothers 🥹💙🖤 The process was fast and easy! (Fill out the application online before going in!) They are loving their new forever home! Thank you HSHV for helping us find our new family members! Dorito & Tostito now Oreo & Leo

Anxious Girl Finds Her Forever Home

We adopted Mishmish (formerly Apple Bloom) on February 19th, 2023 from HSHV, hoping to find a friend for our resident cat, Yeimy! Very quickly, we realized that Mishmish had anxiety-induced aggression, severe territorial issues and lacked proper socialization. While this was extremely stressful, we worked with the vets at HSHV over the last 6 months to try and make this work for her, our resident cat and our family! This meant we tried combinations of anxiety meds, arthritis shots, (re)started cat introductions multiple times and anything you can imagine. I’m happy to share that 6 months after adopting her and
