Turn scared sun conure

After reaching out to them, we were told they had a history of being biters and unable to be handled. I spent 5 minutes talking softly with them and telling them they were okay.  In the first minutes of my opening the carrier, they decided to climb up my hand and up on my shoulder…   Rocky and Norman now Sunset and Sunburst

Winnie has found her forever home!

My partner and I had been wanting to adopt our own dog for quite some time now, and we decided to bring in the new year with a new pup! We came to HSHV to find the right dog for us, and after going on one visit to the shelter, no one caught our eye. Upon our second visit, we saw (TiTi) Winnie. She was circulating her crate while holding a stuffie in her mouth and wiggling her butt from side to side (things she still does every single day). We really wanted to give her a forever home after

What’s Next for Animals in 2025?

As you may know, the 2024 Michigan legislative session closed with a wail of despair. Near the end, the State House was unable to vote due to intentional member absence, leaving hundreds of bills to die — including a long list of important animal protection bills such as: Pet license plate (funding for spay/neuter and support for shelters) Cat declaw ban Animal Bond and Forfeiture (allowing a better process to get cruelty case animals out of shelters and into loving homes) Queenie’s Law (ending painful experiments on dogs) Veterinary telehealth expansion (to better help people and pets) Ban on pet

Laying it out there – Why eggs are expensive

The current egg shortage and skyrocketing prices have left folks confused and upset. While some blame inflation or humane farming practices, the primary cause is a bird flu outbreak, exacerbated by factory farming practices. Bird Flu and the Egg Crisis Since early 2022, the H5N1 strain of avian influenza has devastated U.S. poultry farms, resulting in the culling of over 130 million birds, including many egg-laying hens. This sharp decline in production has caused prices to surge. Yet, the poultry industry’s response has been baffling. To save costs, the agriculture industry has reportedly resisted implementing effective biosecurity measures, allowing the

Regarding Milan’s beloved wild turkey

On December 10, 2024, our Animal Cruelty Investigation and Emergency Rescue team responded to a call from the Sheriff’s Department asking for assistance with a wild turkey. There were concerns that this turkey, living in a busy parking lot, was in danger of being hit by a car, and there were also complaints from community members about aggressive behavior. HSHV assisted in this situation with only one intention — to help with relocation — and had the ability to do so immediately. However, unbeknownst to us, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) was already on scene, as were several

Sweet girl choses me when i needed her most

I lost my cat the night before, which was so hard I instantly folded the next day and needed a buddy to spend my life with. So I showed up with my family to try and see if any of the cats at the shelter would take to me, or simply show interest in me. When going around I noticed a kitty who was sitting at the back of her cadge, and she started to chirp at me. Once I came over she jumped down to rub up against the bars. I asked to visit with her and the first
