Petey is the best dog!
Everyone thought we were crazy for getting a puppy when I had a baby, but I wanted them to grow up together. We were told Petey (formally Chucky) was mouthy and loved to nip at hands. That didn’t deter us because we are experienced dog owners. He was all the way in the back and was the last of his litter. I knew I wanted him coming in, but it was set in stone when I met him. We got him that day, and with lots of training and patience, he has become such an amazing dog. He’s good with

What would your dog’s note say?
Recently a news story about an abandoned puppy in Michigan “went viral” because of a sad note attached to that pup. The note told a story of an owner who had a stroke and a puppy needing a new home because of it. While this is a heart-breaking situation, it is also very common. This easily happens hundreds of times a day in Michigan alone. The reality is that our companion animals get stuck in the crosshairs of our messy lives. The part of the note that bothered me was at the end, it read “Please don’t take me to

My Dear Mutt
On February 28, 2004, my family was told that we were to expect four female pups the next day as foster parents for HSHV. The pups were part of a litter of eight who’d been abandoned. We arrived at the Humane Society of Huron Valley the next day, and we were supplied with a cage, supplies, dog food and four little pups about six weeks old. We took the pups home. They were quite active, and we bought a baby gate to keep them from running rampant through our house. They were Suzy, Jade, Kyra and Abra. After a couple

Duke’s Forever home
We adopted Duke October 6th. He was from the Love Train, and had already been adopted once, then returned. We were looking for a Labrador-type of dog as a companion for our German Shepherd who is a year old. After a couple hours of excitement and seeing new things, we realized he was a perfect fit for us and for Callie. Callie and he play relentlessly all day, and Duke even gets to go to work with me sometimes to get some socialization! He’s doing great! Shadow now Duke

Rosie in Full Bloom!
Former Tiny Lion Rosie came home with us (myself and my boyfriend) in August after an arduous trial of certification and recommendations and verification to get an emotional support animal, but it was worth every single bump in the road to have her with us. She who started out as a shy kitty is now the queen of our household who doesn’t hesitate to tell us what’s on her mind. She has us wrapped tightly around her little thumbs, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Rosie works tirelessly day and night to keep me emotionally supported (see the

We always have room in our hearts
After a grieving period following the passing of our senior dogs, we were ready for a new family member. We fell in love with Evie’s Love Train photo, and hoped she would like us. As we waited in line on a snowy Friday morning in February, we were so excited to meet her! When the HSHV volunteer brought her to us, she was a little anxious, but immediately wriggled up into our laps and snuggled close. She liked us!!! We love her!! Some tears of joy were shed as we opened our hearts to this bundle of cuteness. She is

Love at first sight
My boyfriend and I adopted Nibbler a few months ago. When we first met him, he was so shy around people and was hiding from them. We walked by him, and he came running out to us just, wanting to play. It was love at first sight. He wasn’t what we were looking for when we walked in, but when we met him there was no way we couldn’t take him home. He’s our baby boy now. He turned a year old in June and is just becoming more himself with age. He’s spoiled rotten and well-loved. Nibbler brings joy

Bailey Grace says gracias
Have you ever spoken out for the voiceless? Thank goodness someone did for Bailey Grace! Animal Cruelty Investigators received a video of her abuse. A puppy on a leash being kicked over and over. Investigators addressed the situation and Bailey Grace left with them. Her life changed in that moment. People no longer kicked her…they loved her! We examined Bailey Grace for injuries – luckily she was okay. She walked around the shelter, ears dragging on the ground, accepting belly rubs along the way. We’re so happy to share that Bailey Grace was recently ADOPTED! As for her previous owners,

Dennis now loves my couch
Saw a beautiful picture of the dog Dennis. Read up about him, filled out adoption profile, next day met up with the foster parent. Dennis took to me the moment I walked in with my other dog, and they bonded instantly… and so did I. We love our new buddy… so we changed his name to Buddy. He is funny and leaps like a kangaroo, barks at the big dogs next yard, plays in the backyard, and I take both of my dogs for a walk when it isn’t raining. Buddy loves to go places in the car with my
