Who’s our community’s Most Humane Youth? HSHV launches first ever local award

“Young people inspire us daily,” says Karen Patterson, director of humane education and volunteering at the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV). “They donate their birthday gifts to animals, take time to read to and calm animals in shelters, and ultimately teach all of us adults to be more compassionate people. The Humane Youth Award is a way to celebrate that.” Celebrating youth who are making a positive impact on the lives of animals in Washtenaw County, Plymouth and Northville, HSHV is launching their first ever local award. “There are few things more beautiful than the bond between young people

Brownie’s new home

When my family of four lost our old man Basset Hound when he crossed the Rainbow Bridge, it took us time to be ready for our new furry family member. When it was time, I headed to HSHV intending to adopt a young adult dog. Brownie sure changed my mind. He was polite and calm for a little puppy, and I thought, “Why not play with him a little?” Well, that was it. Stole my heart. He has been wonderful — from potty training to sleeping through the night and basic training. He is smart and willing to learn. I

Making Memories with Milly

3 years ago my daughter attended her friend’s birthday party at HSHV, and we wound up coming home with Milly! She’s an adorable Black Lab mix that came on the Love Train. She loves belly rubs, Milk Bones, and long walks with our family! We are so glad we found her! We can’t imagine life without our precious pooch, Milly!

One way to pick Michigan politicians: See how they treat animals

Gubernatorial candidate, Shri Thanedar, recently received some negative publicity regarding lab animals (beagles and monkeys) used at his former research facility.  The company filed for bankruptcy and the animals were abandoned, locked in the building with no care.  They were saved by former lab workers who broke into the building to provide food and water, and rescue groups who found placements in homes and sanctuaries.  The candidate claimed he was an animal lover and blamed the bank that foreclosed on the property. Political candidates face much public scrutiny to help voters understand their ability to lead.  Though very occasionally an inflammatory

Family of 7 become family of 8 after bringing Elese home!

We have been talking about getting a new dog so we decided to go to the Humane Society of Huron Valley and look. We got there, went through, and saw Elese. We took her for a walk. Our 19 year old wanted to walk her and the minute she was told to sit and she gave my son her paw, it was over: we knew she was the right one for us. We brought our other dog up to see how they interacted. We took Elise home for a Pajama party for 3 days, and that Friday, we signed her

The fabulous Denny Dog

We adopted Denver so that our girls could grow up knowing and loving a dog, and Denny delivered! At the beginning she was very rambunctious and did need a lot of devoted training and exercise to teach her how to behave around our small children. We are so happy that we didn’t give up on her and were devoted. Now she is super protective of her human sisters and is a great family pet. She gives my girls kisses all the time! We love Denver as a member of the family!   Minnie now Denver

Extra Help for HSHV Animals!

Emily and Ashley are an animal lovers who know that the animals in their community could use some extra help. Both girls decided that a great way to help out would be to hold a lemonade stand and donate the proceeds to HSHV. We are so grateful for her hard work and were so happy that they support our organization. Thank you to Emily and Ashley for showing so much compassion!
