Our Hero, Thumper!

Our family adopted Thumper on St. Patrick’s Day 2010. He was 2 1/2 yrs old so he really is an old man now, getting close to 16 years old. We knew right away that he was for us! He has his share of physical challenges but he still wants his 2 walks a day, although he needs quite a bit of help. We are happy to help, as you only live once! When we brought Thumper home, he already had such a beautiful personality. We did the dog training classes at HSHV and he passed his canine citizenship test. We

My Ginger Boy!

I have been a rescue dog serial adopter, many from HSHV. With my senior dog Rocket’s health declining, I decided to take a walk through to check on available pups – to be a part of our household and for our other dog Jax. Well it was love at first site with this 5 month old, who is a wonderful addition to our home and “pack”. Maverick now Alfie

Happy Jacks

I had a dog and a cat at the same time. The dog was 13 1/2 years old and the cat was 20 1/2 years old. I had to make the decision to let my dog go. He was in very very poor health, and his back legs gave out on him. I’d had him since he was eight weeks old. Before I could bring another dog into the house, I had to wait till my cat died. My cat died about six months after I had to put the dog down. I buried him in my flower garden in

April Fools!

A month before our wedding, we were searching for a pet. I signed us up for the Love Train emails just in case one of those cuties would steal our hearts. My favorite flower is a tulip; it was the only flower in my bouquet and every centerpiece. When I saw a puppy named Tulip I just knew I had to have it. I sent my husband the picture and highlighted the name with a big please?? The Love Train came on April 1, so when my husband sent me a picture of a puppy saying “meet the boy named

Stevie stole our hearts!

I lost my elderly dog in early 2022 and was absolutely heartbroken. The house was too quiet and lonely without him, and I missed the energy dogs bring. A couple months later I saw Stevie’s picture on HSHV’s website and immediately drove over to see him. He was brought in with their Love Train program. When I got there he was jumping all over his sister trying to get my attention, whining and “screaming” at me when I pet his sister. When I got to meet him separately from the puppies, he immediately started giving me kisses, jumping everywhere, just

Finding Love

Glitch found me during a rough patch in 2019. I traveled to many shelters and HSHV was the last stop of the day. The moment I saw Glitch’s sweet face I knew I wanted to get to know him. I admit I was very hesitant at first, as he is blind and has cognitive complications, and I was a 20 year old working college student. With a little push from a friend, I took Glitch home. The rest is history. He’s my best cuddle bug and companion. I think he’s helped me grow through love and I like to think

Keno has changed our hearts forever ♥️

April 2010 we adopted Keno, a pit bull mix, from HSHV. At the time Keno was 7 months old. We fell in love with him almost immediately. He came into our home and has brought so much joy, love, cuddles and laughter, he is a part of our hearts forever. We were originally told that Keno loves toys, and you were right, till this day he loves toys! We have given Keno the best life we can offer, with home-made dog food, comfy beds and blankets, plenty of toys, nice fenced-in backyard, healthy treats and a ton of human friends!

Passing of Dear Donut

With heavy hearts we notify you of the passing of our dear Donut. We adopted him in September 2019. He was approximately 10 years old when we adopted him and had the beginning stages of kidney failure. He had been at HSHV for some time. Donut was a wonderful little boy and brought great love and joy to our home. In turn we were able to provide him with love and a quality of life in his remaining years. We will miss him dearly.

One in a million chance.

In July of 2022, my dog Buddy (Love Train alumni) had to be put down unexpectedly at two and a half years old. After four hours at the HSHV vet, I went home without him. Weeks later, I took my niece and nephew with me to pick up his pawprints. We decided to look around and cheer ourselves up before the ride home. We entered one of the cat rooms and noticed an adult cat sitting at her kennel door. She put her head against the door, I put my hand in, and she rubbed against me. Something just clicked.
