Older fur babies are fur babies just the same

Dear HSHV, In September of 2021 we came to the shelter looking for a kitty friend to adopt. Well, while we weren’t expecting to fall in love with two older cats. They have completed our family perfectly. I can’t imagine life without my fur babies, they are my best friends and I absolutely adore them. Peanut is almost 13 and still runs around wanting to play all day long. Violet is almost 11 and follows me around the apartment, yelling at me to pick her up and give her attention. They are the most gentle, loving and easygoing cats I

Welcome Home, Zelda!

We were lucky enough to meet Zelda (formerly Snow Pea) the day she arrived at HSHV. She is a lovely addition to our family, playful and cuddly with an enthusiastic purr. She has been very gracious with our toddler (who adores her) and gradually charming our 10-year-old cat. Snow Pea now Zelda

Willow fills our family’s heart

Today (2/18/2023) is Willow’s 1 year anniversary in her forever home. Our family had just lost our senior boys a handful of months earlier, within 2 months of one another. Both Kovu and Spencer were between 15 and 16 years old. My daughter and I pushed my wife hard to check out the Love Train. We didn’t get to it earlier in the day but went after all of the other adopters, and in the room there were about 8-10 cages with puppies left from earlier in the day waiting for new homes. We spoke with the very pleasant staff

Crazy Carlton

When we first got Carl we were told he likes to hide, you probably won’t see or hear from him much but just know he loves you from a distance. Well, by day two I had just the sweetest most talkative boy following me around the house and telling me everytime he could see the bottom of his bowl. After setting up some boxes and a cat tower he has blossomed into a very social boy. Even brave enough to greet guests on the occasion. We learned he’s a simple man and likes chicken flavors only, and his toy of

Nallie is now loving life

We adopted Nallie (now Kartoshka, which means potato in Russian) at the beginning of November 2022 after losing our young female cat to lymphoma. She was surrendered to the shelter with 6 other cats, yet she instantly became friends with our two dogs. She spent her first two months with us bullying our other cat, but they are finally coming around to each other and I think they will be good friends in no time. We named her potato because she was a bit portly when we adopted her, but she has since lost some weight after her long periods

Lion turned teddy bear!

When we adopted Lanny we were told that he was quite unfriendly and maybe even a little bit aggressive, but still suitable for a barn cat. Something told us to give this little Lion a chance. Well, we are happy to say that his description could not have been further from the truth! This man craves attention, loves every creature he comes in contact with (especially the dog!) and is a total snuggler. We realize that it is difficult to get a proper assessment when there are so many variables and changes in their lives at that point, but we

He lives up to his name

I kept the name Sweet William that HSHV so aptly gave him. I wanted a cat that would be gentle with my infant grandson. Not only is he gentle with the baby, he is so calm and affectionate that he serving as a hospice volunteer. He snuggles with patients and brings smiles to everyone he meets.

Love Carina ❤️

It’s been two months since I adopted Carina. She has taken over my second bedroom as her room. She is still a bit shy around the other animals. Its great to see her becoming comfortable and exploring the entire house. The vet has her on a special diet which has improved her overall health and actually has gained a little weight. She is so precious. 💕 Thank you.

He made himself right at home

I had a blue pit named scooter who I had to put down around six months ago. He was 13 1/2 years old. I wanted to get a dog right away, but I had an elderly cat. I waited until my cat passed away at 20.5 years old. Less than a week later, I came and adopted Jacks. I don’t have a fenced-in yard so I have to take him out on a leash. As you guys know, he is strong as a bull! I purchased a training collar that I haven’t started using yet. The day I brought him
