When we adopted Lanny we were told that he was quite unfriendly and maybe even a little bit aggressive, but still suitable for a barn cat. Something told us to give this little Lion a chance. Well, we are happy to say that his description could not have been further from the truth! This man craves attention, loves every creature he comes in contact with (especially the dog!) and is a total snuggler. We realize that it is difficult to get a proper assessment when there are so many variables and changes in their lives at that point, but we

He lives up to his name
I kept the name Sweet William that HSHV so aptly gave him. I wanted a cat that would be gentle with my infant grandson. Not only is he gentle with the baby, he is so calm and affectionate that he serving as a hospice volunteer. He snuggles with patients and brings smiles to everyone he meets.

Love Carina ❤️
It’s been two months since I adopted Carina. She has taken over my second bedroom as her room. She is still a bit shy around the other animals. Its great to see her becoming comfortable and exploring the entire house. The vet has her on a special diet which has improved her overall health and actually has gained a little weight. She is so precious. 💕 Thank you.

Jet man finds his forever home at 9 weeks old
Jet was a little baby when we first picked him up. We originally stopped by to check out a German Shepard.. but he wasn’t able to come home with other dogs:(. We then saw “Tezos” along with a couple other puppies around him. He caught my eye as soon as I saw him and now we’re forever best friends. I will always be grateful that I got such a good boy at such a young age and I thank you guys. Tezos now Jet

He made himself right at home
I had a blue pit named scooter who I had to put down around six months ago. He was 13 1/2 years old. I wanted to get a dog right away, but I had an elderly cat. I waited until my cat passed away at 20.5 years old. Less than a week later, I came and adopted Jacks. I don’t have a fenced-in yard so I have to take him out on a leash. As you guys know, he is strong as a bull! I purchased a training collar that I haven’t started using yet. The day I brought him

The Last Kitten on Earth
I really love Dinah’s adoption story because it all felt like a whirlwind of fate. My husband and I wanted a second cat to join our solo-cat, Tinker Bell. It was eighth after Christmas in 2018 and we decided to go to some shelters to look around. The first place we went to was closed for the holidays and the second place we went to, all the way in Pontiac, had no kittens. Before driving around more I decided to call some places. Most places had no kittens (because it was so NOT kitten season). I also had a picture

Doc blesses us twice
When I was much younger, I tried to adopt a cat to become my companion through being sick with lyme disease. My first attempt turned out to be sick as well, and HSHV asked for me to return her. While this made me sad, I found Doc that day. He came with challenges – he had been found in a garbage bin, dumped with the trash. Whoever had him before my sister and I clearly didn’t care for him. When he came to our home, he completely forgot how to. use the litter box or eat on his own. We

HSHV’s “outdoor cat”
I had lost my beloved orange barn kitty and I was checking in weekly at HSHV. While touring the cat condo I heard outdoor meowing! The staff told me that was their “outdoor cat.” Surprised, I went to see a very vocal Siamese mix. I talked to the supervisor and found out that they were trying to bring “Frodo” in. I explained that I had lost my 2 barn kitties at 19 and 20 years. That they wanted for nothing, had heated beds and heat lamps plus heated wet food. He said that he’d keep trying to bring in the

Tiny Teen Mother
I was checking out the kitty room and found this tiny teen mother. She only weighed 6.5 lbs! A kind person had brought her and her month-old kittens in. I asked staff if I could pet her. They said yes but to not take her out of her cage. I said ok. I opened the cage door and tiny kitty leaped onto my chest! Well, that was that and she came home with me. Winter now Minuet

Senior dog finds a home
I had been looking for a cocker spaniel to adopt, since my last one had passed away 6 years ago. The time was right and I was ready. My niece worked at HSHV and called me one day to say a cocker had come in. I jumped in the car with my sister and drove down. What I saw was a senior cocker spaniel in bad condition. He had been matted so his hair was shaved down in various parts of his body with tufts of hair sticking up. He was quiet. Never barked even though the kennels were full
