The Last Kitten on Earth

I really love Dinah’s adoption story because it all felt like a whirlwind of fate. My husband and I wanted a second cat to join our solo-cat, Tinker Bell. It was eighth after Christmas in 2018 and we decided to go to some shelters to look around. The first place we went to was closed for the holidays and the second place we went to, all the way in Pontiac, had no kittens. Before driving around more I decided to call some places. Most places had no kittens (because it was so NOT kitten season). I also had a picture

Doc blesses us twice

When I was much younger, I tried to adopt a cat to become my companion through being sick with lyme disease. My first attempt turned out to be sick as well, and HSHV asked for me to return her. While this made me sad, I found Doc that day. He came with challenges – he had been found in a garbage bin, dumped with the trash. Whoever had him before my sister and I clearly didn’t care for him. When he came to our home, he completely forgot how to. use the litter box or eat on his own. We

HSHV’s “outdoor cat”

I had lost my beloved orange barn kitty and I was checking in weekly at HSHV. While touring the cat condo I heard outdoor meowing! The staff told me that was their “outdoor cat.” Surprised, I went to see a very vocal Siamese mix. I talked to the supervisor and found out that they were trying to bring “Frodo” in. I explained that I had lost my 2 barn kitties at 19 and 20 years. That they wanted for nothing, had heated beds and heat lamps plus heated wet food. He said that he’d keep trying to bring in the

Tiny Teen Mother

I was checking out the kitty room and found this tiny teen mother. She only weighed 6.5 lbs! A kind person had brought her and her month-old kittens in. I asked staff if I could pet her. They said yes but to not take her out of her cage. I said ok. I opened the cage door and tiny kitty leaped onto my chest! Well, that was that and she came home with me. Winter now Minuet

Senior dog finds a home

I had been looking for a cocker spaniel to adopt, since my last one had passed away 6 years ago. The time was right and I was ready. My niece worked at HSHV and called me one day to say a cocker had come in. I jumped in the car with my sister and drove down. What I saw was a senior cocker spaniel in bad condition. He had been matted so his hair was shaved down in various parts of his body with tufts of hair sticking up. He was quiet. Never barked even though the kennels were full

Best Kitty Friends!

My partner and I noticed our 2 year old black cat wanted some companionship and a friend to groom and play with, so we decided to check if there were any cats she might get along with. We fell in love when we saw Bluey – he was such a ham and had the same temperament as our resident cat. For the first week they didn’t get along very well, but after a while they were chasing each other up and down our hallways, grooming each other, and sleeping together. We’re so glad we adopted him! He was the best

The Blues Kitties

We adopted Jake and Elwood, aka The Blues Brothers, on 12/11/22. These “shy” brothers quickly became princes of the household and enjoy a busy schedule of eating, playing, napping, watching birds and squirrels from the front window, and snuggling in their heated blanket. Our family is so thankful to have these little guys in our home. Zed & Zemo, now Jake & Elwood

Odie-Wan Kenobi is my buddy

It took some time for him to settle in, but now he rules the house! He’s playful, extremely smart and has a very quirky personality. Odie’s learned lots of commands (sit, shake, lay down, wait/stay, let’s go) and knows how to get what he wants! He loves treats, especially cheese and ice cream. He’s a cuddle monster, a momma’s boy and my best friend. We go to the dog park often and he has lots of friends, even a few girlfriends. We learned that he’s 100% Treeing Walker Coonhound and was still a puppy when we got him, not 2.5

Thirteen, three-legged and thriving!

Millie was adopted on January 11, 2010 from HSHV. My husband and I walked past her kennel and noticed that she only had three legs, and instantly fell in love. She was full of wiggles and kisses. We didn’t know what to expect adopting a three legged dog, and thought there would be some limitations to what she could do. From the moment we brought her home and she ran up a flight up stairs and jumped straight into bed for cuddles – she surprised us! She ran faster and jumped higher than her four-legged brother ever could. She will
