Age: 1  Sex: Male   Breed: Pitbull Mix  Weight: 73 lbs   Restrictions: Must Meet Dogs; No Kids Under 12

Derby is one of our more nervous guys at the shelter. He prefers to spend his time in quiet areas and is quite overwhelmed by the goings on at the shelter. Over time he has shown social behaviors to our staff here, often quietly coming up to them for pets and leaning in. Derby has met dogs while in our care and can be initially very fearful, though with time and patience has warmed up to playing with another dog. He should meet any potential dog siblings prior to foster. We do not have history with cats so discretion and separated introductions should be followed. He should not go with kids 12 or under due to his nervousness. Due to his fearful behaviors, Derby does some behaviors some might call odd. When he walks on leash, he often trails right behind his handler, almost like he’s hiding behind your legs, and he doesn’t seem to prefer when you hold eye contact with him (he will back up/retreat if you stare at him). Despite being a nervous man, Derby is making steady progress with both people and dogs and we would love to see how this guy settles into a quiet home environment.

How to Foster Derby:

New fosters can take the first step by learning about fostering and signing up to become a new foster. Veteran foster parents can email fosters@hshv.org to schedule a pickup appointment.
