Ann Arbor, MI (December 20, 2021) — Where’s the biggest and best animal shelter in Michigan? You might be surprised.
Recently published annual reports on licensed animal shelters in Michigan show Ann Arbor’s Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) took in more animals in 2020 than any other shelter in the state.
5,472 dogs and cats came through HSHV’s shelter doors last year—though that number doesn’t include owned animals serviced by HSHV’s nonprofit veterinary clinic or the thousands of wild animals, other small domestic and farm animals also helped through HSHV.
The report also shows that in 2020, HSHV’s 97% live release rate was the highest of any shelter of similar size and type.
“These numbers tell a story about HSHV and about 2020. Throughout the pandemic, we remained steadfast in our commitment to serving the community, animals and people in need. We kept our doors open and continue to do so. We take in not just owner-surrendered animals but also lost and stray animals and those who have been abandoned, orphaned and victims of cruelty,” says HSHV’s CEO, Tanya Hilgendorf.
“This same year, we achieved our 10th straight four-star rating from Charity Navigator, putting us among the top 3% of evaluated charities in the nation. Despite all our success, we spend part of each day thinking about how we can do better or more. We’re always challenging ourselves,” says Hilgendorf.
“Many people think humane societies are funded through state or national organizations, but there is no umbrella group. We’re all independent organizations with unique services, approaches, and philosophies. Our mission is to save and protect as many animals as possible. But it’s not just about keeping animals alive. It’s about providing the absolute best care available to our animals and needed support to the people who love them.”
So far in 2021, HSHV has taken in over 7,000 animals, including over 5,700 dogs and cats.
