We’d Like to End Breed Discrimination in Michigan.

A new set of bills have recently been introduced to prohibit discrimination of dogs based on breed (HB 503950405041). This is especially important as local communities continue to develop ordinances that prohibit certain breeds of dogs, including Grosse Point Shores who just enacted a breed ban in September.

Banning or restricting certain breeds is a well-meaning but ineffective attempt to promote safe communities. There’s no evidence that such bans enhance safety for people or animals. Instead, resources are used to punish responsible owners of well-behaved dogs, rather than protecting the community from reckless owners and unsafe dogs. For instance, one could have the sweetest pit bull of all time, that has no history of aggression, but it would be considered dangerous simply because it is a pit bull.
