Our Love Train transports animals from overwhelmed shelters to HSHV, where they can find loving homes. We assist shelters throughout Michigan and beyond, and regularly partner with a rescue called HARTT (Hardin Animal Relocation and Transition Team) to bring puppies up from Tennessee. This not only saves pups who face little chance of adoption, but also provides our local adopters with an option to rescue instead of purchase from a pet store or puppy mill.

Here is what helping out with the Love Train entails:

• The Love Train arrives with puppies from Tennessee on select Wednesday nights. You will arrive at HSHV at about 8pm, and line up with other volunteers beside the van. We will hand you a puppy to carry through Intake for their initial exam, dewormer etc, then you will place them in their kennel for the night. You’ll be done by about 9:30pm. Please note: sometimes the Love Train faces delays due to traffic, weather etc, so you will receive updates throughout the night if the schedule is pushed back.
• You’ll want to dress for the weather as you will be outside while waiting to be handed your puppy
• As a precaution, if you are concerned about the possibility of disease transmission to your animals at home, we recommend washing any clothing, jackets, gloves, etc using color-safe bleach once you are home. It is advised not to participate in Love Train if you have unvaccinated puppies, immune compromised dogs, or are fostering puppies at home.
