Uno and his siblings arrived at HSHV in April 2025. Orphaned and struggling, they needed urgent help, and we quickly got them into the care of one of our amazing fosters. Thanks to an incubator, syringe feeding, and plenty of love, the kittens now had a fighting chance.

But as Uno grew, his breathing became labored. He had “funnel chest,” a condition in which his sternum and rib cage curved inward, leaving little room for his heart and lungs to grow. This is often fatal and requires costly surgery. Thankfully, due to the kindness of HSHV supporters like you, Uno was able to have his life-saving surgery in July.

Uno had his post-surgery check-up just last week, and we’re pleased to share that his outlook is good! While he’s not out of the woods yet, additional check-ups over the course of his first year will monitor his progress and healing.

Uno’s foster can tell he’s feeling much better and wanted to share this update:

“Uno is doing amazing! He is like a whole new cat after his surgery. Prior, he would act like he wanted to play but would give up after a few pounces. Post surgery he is running around, jumping, and playing nonstop. His personality is really shining through now that he can breathe more comfortably again. He is trying to catch up on all the kitten play time he missed! ”

For now, Uno will continue to recover in his foster home, and soon he’ll be ready for adoption. We’re so happy Uno has a second chance, and we can’t wait for him to find his forever family!

Heading into August, we have over 250 kittens in our care! Without our incredible fosters, we couldn’t be a safe landing place for these little ones who are relying on us for safety, nutrition, and medical attention. From providing continuous care to vulnerable newborns, to making space in our shelter for new kittens in need, to giving scared strays a chance to blossom in the safety of a home environment, fosters are a crucial part of our life-saving work. As kittens continue to come through our doors, we could use more fosters to keep successful outcomes like Uno’s possible. Please spread the word or consider becoming a foster yourself!
