A hand full

I was looking around for a support dog. I stopped and chatted with Chloe, and then I went on my way. I looked at a couple of other dogs, and then I was walking back past Chloe when she let out this yowl like, “Wait!” I told the lady, “I’ll take ‘er!” and she’s been here ever since, with her two siblings– cats Henry and Nonna. She likes to chase them, so they basically stay in the room until they come out at night when they know she’s asleep. Chloe sleeps in my bed every night. She hogs the covers.

Baking Sisters

Anna and Lily are two sweet sisters who love cats!  In addition to loving cats, they like to bake, so they decided to host a bake sale in their neighborhood and collected donations for HSHV.  They even collected donations in a jar that they decorated as a cat!  Thank you, Lily and Anna, for your generosity!

Rosa recently celebrated a birthday!  In a super act of kindness, she decided to ask for donations for animals in need instead of gifts for herself.  She also sold some items and donated the proceeds from her sales to HSHV as well!  Thank you, Rosa, for loving and helping animals!  HSHV’s residents are so grateful!

Resolution for Humane Pet Acquisition Ordinance unanimously passed by Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners

Ann Arbor, MI (September 19, 2019) – HSHV and Puppy Mill Awareness of Southeast Michigan applaud the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners for unanimously passing a resolution to encourage local communities to adopt a Humane Pet Acquisition Ordinance, as introduced by Commissioner Andy Labarre. It is well-known that commercial breeding facilities, known as puppy and kitten mills, are incredibly cruel, creating unnecessary suffering and financial and emotional hardship on consumers who are usually unaware of where the animals come from and often deal with lingering health problems. This ordinance would ensure that our pets come to us only by way of humane

Sympathetic to Surgery

Ashley is a Junior Volunteer at HSHV, so we already know how much she loves and cares for animals.  But when she saw a puppy that was in need of a special surgery she wanted to go above and beyond.  Along with her brother, Matthew, she raised money to donate to this dog’s special surgery fund.  We’re so grateful for Ashley and Matthew’s kindness, and are happy to say that the puppy received the care she needed!  Thank you Ashley and Matthew!

Tim Horton’s kitty comes home with his rescuers!

It was around 11 PM when I saw a white and grey cat in a Tim Horton’s parking lot while my friend was driving us home. I gasped, “Oh my god, that’s a cat!” My friend sighed. “Do you wanna stop?” After roughly two hours of talking to the cat, befriending them, feeding her, etc. we sent her home with my sighing friend for the night so we could bring her to HSHV the next day. Our sweet and fluffy friend stayed at HSHV for barely a week; she was dubbed Quigley, and we were all laughing about how she

Nick Furry says, “There’s a place here for you!”

It’s been over 20 years since I’ve had a kitten or a puppy, and as my daughter gets older and comes closer to finishing high school and going off to make her own way in the world, I decided it was time to open my heart again. After losing my 4 long time pets in the past 5 years, it was really difficult to even think about it. But this past summer, I house-sat for a family that had three cats and I found myself missing that companionship after my house sitting duties were done. So, I went to HSHV

Our missing piece

It’s hard to believe that we only adopted Otis (formerly Legs) only 6 weeks ago because he feels like he’s been part of our family for years! I know he was meant to be with us. I had begun searching for a partner to my other puppy because she had more energy than my older dog could keep up with, but I also had that nagging feeling in my heart that I needed another dog… You know, it’s like when you know you’re ready to have kids and you find yourself so anxiously, impatiently waiting! For me, it has been

The Kindness of Beatrix
