Healing a Broken Heart

Back in February this year, my 2 year old cat, Ellie Rose, suddenly passed away from a heart tumor. I was devastated and heartbroken for her loss. My other cat, Nala, was sad also, as her behavior changed. In early July I decided to go to HSHV and look at the kittens. Right in the main lobby I found a calico kitten. Once our eyes met, I fell in love. After snuggling her, it was a done deal. A few days later she was ready to go home. I named her Dinah, after the kitten in Alice in Wonderland. Dinah

Myotis Would Love a Foster

Age: 1  Sex: Male   Breed: Pit Mix  Weight: 59 Pounds Restrictions: No Cats. No Small Animals. Myotis has been at the shelter since the beginning of August, so we would like to get him into a home environment. He is likely house-trained, as he keeps his kennel very clean. He was nervous at first, but has become a favorite of many staff members. He also loves carrying his favorite toys with him on his walks! He would need to meet dog siblings at the shelter before going to foster to make sure they are a good match. He needs a foster home without cats or small

Silas finds a happy home!

I came to HSHV in early August looking to adopt a kitten. As a first time adopter, I wasn’t really sure how the process worked. Luckily the staff was very kind and helpful and after doing some quick paperwork, I was able to go meet the cats. I went into one of the communal rooms with multiple cats, and there was one who wouldn’t leave my side. He wanted to play, cuddle, and stay by me. I took a photo of him and told HSHV that he was the one. After adopting him, Silas did take a few days to

I was looking for Julien, but found Ricky instead

My mom wanted an orange kitty & I’ll admit, I was secretly looking for a big gray kitty that I wanted to call Julien after a character in Trailer Park Boys. Mom saw Ricky backed up in a small corner of his cage & that was that. Sure the sign said in essence this guy was bite-y. But, we didn’t think that would be a big deal since our other cat Pounce de Leon would nip us from time to time. The friendly folks at the front desk helped us adopt Ricky & they were so pleased we picked him.

Ruby’s Home

The first dog was too wild I couldn’t even visit with her. Then I went back to see the puppies again and visited with Ruby (Currach). I was on the floor with her when they fed the dogs and the other dogs were barking and Ruby was shaking. I knew I had to take her home with me. My family loves her. Currach now Ruby

We love our fish!

When we were introduced to Moira at the shelter, she was grasping the cage doors on all fours to play, and when we opened to the doors she ran into our laps and began to purr. We knew then that she was our cat. She is the most energetic, sweet and vocal cat and she is so loved! Moira Rose now Fish

Where Do You House 126 Rescued Animals?

In early September, we rescued over 120 animals from neglectful conditions. With our shelter already full, finding foster homes for these new guests was critical to be able to take in other animals in need. In this Q&A, our Foster Care Manager, Kaylee Baker, sheds light on how we found safe spaces for 126 animals, including reptiles, bugs, and goats!      Quick 101 about fostering at HSHV:  Fostering is when an animal stays in the home of an individual (instead of the shelter) for a fixed period or until they are adopted. Fostering is critical to our mission: it frees
