Koko Needs a Foster

Age: 4   Sex: Female   Breed: Pit Mix  Weight: 58lbs   Restrictions: No Dogs. No Young Kids.  Koko would love to get out of the hectic shelter environment and back into a home. This lovely lady needs to be the only dog in the home and would benefit from continuing reactivity training to reinforce calm behavior when seeing other dogs out on walks. She lived peacefully with the cats in her previous home, but would still benefit from a slow introduction to any cats if living with them in foster. She would do best with older kids, as she can be too jumpy for kids

Happy Gotcha Day, Nigel!

It was a cold day in late January 2024 and I talked my husband into going with me to HSHV to look at dogs. We were down to one dog and he seemed lonely after losing his buddies over the years. We didn’t plan to go home with a dog that day (or my husband didn’t), but that’s not how things played out. I was out “test driving” another dog and my husband was back in the kennel. When I came back in, he said, “I found our dog.” Apparently, as my husband knelt down next to the kennel, Nigel

Friends for Life Provides Winter Dog Walking Support for Senior Pet Owners

When HSHV launched Friends for Life in the spring of 2023, the goal was to provide services and resources that could help protect the bond between people and their companion animals, particularly for senior pet owners. As word about our newest program spread, one thing was clear: there was a need for dog walking support, especially during Michigan’s colder months. In winter 2025, Friends for Life launched our first winter dog walking program at a local senior apartment complex in Ann Arbor, and due to its success, the program is back for 2026!  This year’s program kicked off in mid-January. HSHV’s Friends for Life Program Coordinator, Kate Holcomb, LLMSW, and Karen Patterson, Vice President of Volunteers and Humane Education, first met with canine enrollees to learn their needs

$1,000 Reward Offered to Help Identify Man Seen Striking, Dragging Dog

Ypsilanti, MI (January 15, 2026) — The Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) continues to investigate the alleged abuse of a dog captured on a doorbell camera in Ypsilanti during the last week of 2025. An anonymous donor is now offering $1,000 cash for information leading to the filing of criminal charges in the case. The video, recorded on Ypsilanti’s South Street, appears to show a man running onto a porch, grabbing a dog with light-colored fur, striking the dog several times, then lifting and dragging the dog by the neck while walking down the steps off the porch. In the

Naveen Needs a Foster

Age: 6   Sex: Male Breed: Pit Mix    Weight: 81lbs    Restrictions: No Dogs. No Kids. Naveen is a shy dog looking for some respite from the shelter havoc and would love to show somebody who he is in a quiet environment. He does well working with staff and volunteers while out for training sessions (Naveen is currently on our Headstart team getting one-on-one training sessions to help build confidence and is typically treat-motivated) but can take some time to warm up to unfamiliar people and would benefit from slow introductions. Due to his cautious nature, he should not go with dogs or kids under 5 and
