Koko Needs a Foster

Age: 4   Sex: Female   Breed: Pit Mix  Weight: 58lbs   Restrictions: No Dogs. No Young Kids.  Koko would love to get out of the hectic shelter environment and back into a home. This lovely lady needs to be the only dog in the home and would benefit from continuing reactivity training to reinforce calm behavior when seeing other dogs out on walks. She lived peacefully with the cats in her previous home, but would still benefit from a slow introduction to any cats if living with them in foster. She would do best with older kids, as she can be too jumpy for kids

Happy Gotcha Day, Nigel!

It was a cold day in late January 2024 and I talked my husband into going with me to HSHV to look at dogs. We were down to one dog and he seemed lonely after losing his buddies over the years. We didn’t plan to go home with a dog that day (or my husband didn’t), but that’s not how things played out. I was out “test driving” another dog and my husband was back in the kennel. When I came back in, he said, “I found our dog.” Apparently, as my husband knelt down next to the kennel, Nigel

Generous Troop #40977

The members of Troop #40977 are so kind! They love volunteering and giving back to their community, so they choose to visit HSHV.  Members created fleece blankets for the cats and dogs, then attended a Scout Program at HSHV.  Thank you so much, Troop #40977!  We greatly appreciate your creative donation, and we know the animals will love the blankets you made for them.

Spyro Needs a Foster

Age: 1   Sex: Male   Breed: Pit Mix    Weight: 78lbs   Restrictions: No Dogs. No Kids Spyro is a very fearful dog who is looking to decompress away from the shelter environment. He can be slow to warm up to new people, though is food motivated and a huge cuddle bug once he decides you are his pal. He will need someone comfortable working with him on building his confidence around novel objects and environments and slow introductions with new people. Due to his nervousness around new dogs he will likely be most comfortable as an only dog. We do not have history with how he does with

Kodak is Seeking Foster

Age: 5   Sex: Male   Breed: Retriever, Labrador   Weight: 63lbs   Restrictions: No Kids. No Dogs (at this time) Kodak struggles with confinement and has been very stressed in his kennel here at the shelter. His surrender profile indicates that he is a fairly well rounded dog who used to go to the dog park and is able to warm up to new people with a little bit of patience, but his stress levels here have resulted in him struggling with interacting with other dogs and unknown people. We are hoping we can see more of his true personality in a foster environment where he can

Friends for Life Provides Winter Dog Walking Support for Senior Pet Owners

When HSHV launched Friends for Life in the spring of 2023, the goal was to provide services and resources that could help protect the bond between people and their companion animals, particularly for senior pet owners. As word about our newest program spread, one thing was clear: there was a need for dog walking support, especially during Michigan’s colder months. In winter 2025, Friends for Life launched our first winter dog walking program at a local senior apartment complex in Ann Arbor, and due to its success, the program is back for 2026!  This year’s program kicked off in mid-January. HSHV’s Friends for Life Program Coordinator, Kate Holcomb, LLMSW, and Karen Patterson, Vice President of Volunteers and Humane Education, first met with canine enrollees to learn their needs

$1,000 Reward Offered to Help Identify Man Seen Striking, Dragging Dog

Ypsilanti, MI (January 15, 2026) — The Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) continues to investigate the alleged abuse of a dog captured on a doorbell camera in Ypsilanti during the last week of 2025. An anonymous donor is now offering $1,000 cash for information leading to the filing of criminal charges in the case. The video, recorded on Ypsilanti’s South Street, appears to show a man running onto a porch, grabbing a dog with light-colored fur, striking the dog several times, then lifting and dragging the dog by the neck while walking down the steps off the porch. In the

Ube Would Love a Foster

Age: 1   Sex: Male   Breed: Pit Mix    Weight: 47lbs   Restrictions: No Kids. Ube is a sweet but nervous guy. He came to us as a stray in emaciated condition. He is still working on gaining weight as well as confidence! He would benefit from a foster experienced with reactivity training, as he typically alarm barks at unfamiliar people he sees on his walks. He would need to meet any potential dog siblings before going to foster. We do not have any history on whether he has experience with cats, so would need the ability to separate and slowly introduce if living with any
