Adopter beware:  The word “rescue” may not mean what you think it means.

Recently the Washington Post investigated the alarming practice of so-called “rescue” groups buying puppies at auction from commercial breeders, known as puppy mills. Here’s what we know about the puppy mill industry:  Nearly all pups that come from a commercial breeder are the result of emotional and physical torture. Breeder dogs are kept in cruel conditions: tiny, dirty, wire-bottom cages, where they are treated as machines of production, churning out litter after litter. Lindsay Reasons, DVM

Shelter Veterinarian Companion Animals – Michigan State University Dr. Reasons is a career changer. In her previous life, she worked as a CPA for a small firm in Michigan. But the veterinary field has always been her calling.  She earned her DVM from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2019. Her special interests include integrative and behavior medicine, and how she can incorporate those into a shelter setting. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with her husband, daughter and two “foster fail” cats.

Emery: Storytime participant gives back

Callan: Animal love

Callan loves dogs and cats, so instead of asking for gifts for his birthday this year he asked for donations to HSHV. He was able to collect food, towels, dog shampoo and dog beds! Thank you Callan for your generous gifts!

Lauren: For the love of puppies

Lauren and her family adopted their puppy from HSHV, but Lauren wanted to do even more to help out the homeless animals of her community. She held a bake sale and donated the money to the continued care of all the animals still looking for their forever homes. Thank you so much Lauren for your awesome donation!

Dakota & Chelsea: Recycling for animals

Elsa: Pawsitively great donations

Elsa and her family are regular visitors at HSHV. They love to stop by and see the cats and dogs available for adoption. For Elsa’s 6th birthday she wanted to give back to all of the animals so she collected pet food, toys and gift cards in lieu of gifts. Thank you so much Elsa for your wonderful donation!
