This was my first experience adopting a dog from a shelter. I’ve always seen these stories on TV and social media where the process is romanticized, and how “you just know” when you see them. We went specifically to look at Mocha, a dog we had seen posted on Instagram (my husband’s dream dog is a chocolate lab). When we entered the dog area, I heard this incessant, continuous barking. I muttered something to my husband that it was probably her, and I was right. There she was, barking nonstop, refusing to make eye-contact with anyone walking by, and refusing

Sidd comes Home
After my Buddy Holly passed on, I felt Peggy Sue needed another cat companion. Now this was in the old building. As I walked down the tiled hallway to the cat area, I heard a cat meowing quite loudly out a side door. Here was this orange tabby in a small cage. We started a “conversation.” It turns out he was a five-year-old who had just come in. So I waited the requisite days. I brought him home, but it took him some time to get adjusted to Peggy Sue, and he would freak out seeing other cats in my

Senior siblings find new home
I was looking for some new animal companions and came across Shadow and Princess (14 years old) while looking through the available cats online at HSHV. I just fell in love with the way that they looked and knew I had to meet them in person. Once I did, I knew right away that I would have to be the one to take these beauties home. These guys have filled my life with love and companionship since the day that they came home. Shadow loves to cuddle within the minute you sit down, and Princess will jump up to scare

My Sweet Baby
We went to HSHV to find a cat a year after our Baby died. We went into the common room and saw a post for a calico female. We looked around and this mostly white kitty, with a few spots and and orange tail wandered out. My husband asked, “Are you a calico kitty?” She ran up to him and head bumped – still to this day does the same – and that was it. She was two. Chey is 13 now. Still head bumps and sleeps on my head Casey Cheyanne now Cheyanne

A fantastic Love Story for Hazel
My husband and I wanted a sibling for our beautiful boy Bentley, a Lab mix. We were looking at many rescues and had a disappointing experience with another rescue until we found the Humane Society of Huron Valley’s Love Train! I was working, so my husband attended alone. He fell in love with Paxil, and we brought her home. She needed a new name, and we decided on Hazel. She is a very happy, funny, kooky and energetic girl, and she completes our home! Thank you so much for rescuing our girl so that she can be a part of

Setting Yourself up for a successful trapping: Pre-scouting an area
August 10, 2020 – Before you begin trapping in a new area, a great way to set yourself up for success is to do some pre-scouting to understand the environment in which the community cats you are helping live, and to create a trapping plan. Pre-scouting can help get a better sense of how many cats are actually in an area. As we all know, estimating the number of cats around is always difficult, and often people asking for help don’t have a true sense of the scale of their community. This also gives the cats in the area a

How to get your dog to trim his own nails (Part 1)
Do you and your dog both dread toe-nail trims? Then why not give your dog the opportunity to give themselves a pedicure on their own by making it into a simple trick? By taping some sandpaper to a plywood board or something similar, you can create a canine nail file! It is easy to train a dog to swipe their paw on the sandpaper, and as they do so, they will end up filing their own nails. Doing a few swipes a day a couple times a week can keep nails from getting unmanageable, and reduce how frequently you need

How to get your dog to file his own nails (part 2)
(Did you miss Part 1?) We show you how to train your dog to file their own nails by swiping at a sandpaper board… and while it is often relatively easy to teach the dog to file their front paws, teaching them to swipe with their rear feet can be a little more challenging. So we like to introduce a little environmental help! Sit on a chair, couch, footstool, etc. and prop your nail file board up at an angle in front of you. Have your dog in front of you and the board. Use a food lure to have

Why we use the training method we do
HSHV has long been an advocate for positive reinforcement-based training methods, and new research continues to support that this is the most effective approach. A new study has found that dogs trained from a variety of cues – including coming when called when off-leash – responded more reliably and faster when trained using positive reinforcement than when dogs were trained the same behaviors using aversive devices, such as shock collars. Ann Arbor, MI (July 30, 2020 — On Monday, July 27, Augusta Township Supervisor Brian Shelby and his wife Tammy, were sentenced two (2) years’ probation for animal cruelty.
