3 years ago I adopted 2 8-week-old littermate brother kittens, Dusty and Cinder. They loved each other and had so much fun playing together. In January of this year, Dusty was diagnosed with a urinary blockage and despite care and treatment from the Emergency Veterinary Hospital, I had to let him cross the bridge 😪. Cinder and I were very sad and miss Dusty so much. In February I started to look for a friend for Cinder. On March 8th, I agreed to foster a pregnant kitty. I named her Opal. After suffering an upper respiratory infection just before giving

Feeling at Home!
Queen Pepper has now been with us for over a week and it feels like she’s always been a part of our family. From day 1, she’s been the sweetest cat who has been giving us and everything around her happy paws and smizing eyes. Her favorite things are belly rubs, playing with all the cat toys, and the cat water fountain. She discovers a new napping place every day and she always greets us when we come home from work. She is such a cuddly love! Queen Pepper

Nori – stealer of socks <3
We went to the HSHV this last Saturday looking for a new addition to our family. We found 3 nuppins that seemed like our kind of dogs and that might mesh well with Kona, our one and only spoiled, old and grumpy wuppins nuppins. Sunday we returned for a PJ party pick up with Nori, 1 out of 3, but after 3 days with this beautiful girl we knew she was meant to be part of our family. She is loving, attentive, protective, playful, soft and kind to our old grumpy Kona, is curious about the cats, but doesn’t have

Repeat Offender
We adopted Dallas (now Drasek) back in 2015. We were told he was a “repeat offender,” having been in and out of HSHV several times. He has a destructive side that proved to be challenging for many owners. This was to be his last adoption, and when we brought our dog Chloe in to meet him, they immediately bonded. The first few years were rough. He broke out of every kennel he was ever placed in, tore up some drywall, ate all the food in the pantry! But eventually we came to an understanding, and with a bit of training

Bruce is welcomed to the pack
Bruce, now Haunter, was so scared and pacing so much when we brought him home. We’re unsure of his story, the guy had probably never been in a home before. The first many nights he slept between us and would wake us up in the middle of the night with kisses. He fit in right away, my husky loves having a brother. So far he loves to get in rivers and we bring him to the skate park where he likes to follow us around and try to herd the skateboards. Also loves cuddling and acting crazy with his brother

Amber’s journey
We adopted Amber (formerly Maggie) Sept 1, 2008. She turned 17 on 2/29/25. We’ve had a great life together. We still walk 2 miles daily with our pal Niles. We’ve camped together all over Michigan and Ontario. Everyone we meet still thinks she’s a puppy. Even though her eyesight is failing she still brings joy to us and everyone she meets along the way. Maggie now Amber

A Gold Medal Dog
It was Summer 2016 and Simone Biles was the U.S.A. Olympic Gold Medal winner in gymnastics. It also was the summer that I adopted Simone, my Gold Medal dog. HSHV named her after the gymnast and I kept that name. Simone is now thirteen years old and the past nine years have been spent with the best dog buddy possible – loving, smart, receptive, funny, silly, perfect. Both of us can be considered ‘elderly’ but we still take three walks each day and we eat healthy (our favorite meal is chicken with rice). Old age for humans can be complicated

A new Pep in his step!
My husband and I adopted Cash (formerly Flint) a few months ago. He was very anxious and scared when we brought him home but quickly warmed up to us over the few days after that. He loves to run, he could run for days if you let him! He has made the perfect disc golf and hiking companion and we can’t wait to take him on his first camping trip this summer! His favourite hobbies include running, and finding sticks, and running with sticks. He loves his afternoon naps with mom, and evening playtime with dad followed by a banana!

The Void Had Me At Hello
March 26, 2025 marks half a year of us being under the same roof. I remember last September, after learning that I had to take my first test in my Honors Art Appreciation class, which was balanced with 15 other credits, I was thinking about a source of energy that could strengthen my mental health. I was excited about the idea of getting a four-legged companion, and without further ado, I did it after a few weeks of thinking about it. When I first saw him on the website, I felt a special connection and immediately decided to “summon” this
