my daughter’s favorite being in the world

We were crushed. Our puppy gave our old dog two playful years more than we ever expected, yet she was 16 years old and the day came when she died. We agreed to grieve before adopting another dog, yet our puppy Peanut had other plans. We had been a two dog family and he moped around our home for weeks. One day the kids asked to visit the humane society, the same place where we had adopted Peanut (Bronco) two years earlier. We said we were going to just look. The Love Train would be coming in a week or

My first time adopting

Back in 2019, I adopted my cat from the Humane Society of Huron Valley. I specifically wanted her, and was happy to know she was still available. When we first met, she swatted at me and was not in the best mood. I was worried she was not going to like me. She had previously been surrendered by another family who likely felt the same. But as weeks passed, she slowly started opening up to me, and we became best of friends. She still has some attitude in her, but she loves traveling, Squeezables, and snuggling up next to me.

Nova finds her forever home

Me and my mom went to just go look at the puppies not knowing we’d bring anybody home. After looking at the puppies I begged her to go see the older dogs. We fell in love with how sweet this girl was. We took her home and she fit right in. Rarity now Nova

The best boy

We adopted Chase 3 years ago. He was a single ferret someone unfortunately had to surrender. He was so cute. The staff explained that he was a bit shy and not big on lifting his body to play. With his age we figured it was just going to be how he was. When we got him home he was a completely different ferret. He was so playful and just a joy. Always getting excited for us to come home and be out to cuddle and give kisses. Eventually we adopted another ferret from another shelter so he had company and

Happy Gotcha Day, Nigel!

It was a cold day in late January 2024 and I talked my husband into going with me to HSHV to look at dogs. We were down to one dog and he seemed lonely after losing his buddies over the years. We didn’t plan to go home with a dog that day (or my husband didn’t), but that’s not how things played out. I was out “test driving” another dog and my husband was back in the kennel. When I came back in, he said, “I found our dog.” Apparently, as my husband knelt down next to the kennel, Nigel

60 pounds of sweetness

Zoey was adopted on 12-30-25! She is so sweet and smart! Already housebroken, knows sit, down, stay, crate, and loves to play and cuddle! She made herself at home the minute she walked in the door. She has welcomed all visitors with serious tail wagging. Neptune now Zoey

The Best of 2025!

Best thing that happened to me in 2025 was this beautiful creature. He was described as “spicy” and “food obsessed” and was an owner surrender. His tail is oddly short and has a permanent kink in it (doctor said it is fine). He had to be isolated in his own cat condo. But he was one of two cats at the shelter who was known to be good with dogs. Ozai took his time to warm up. He was stand offish. He ate a lot when he got here. He shed so much I took him to get checked out-

Our Princess has departed ❤️

In 2023 I adopted Baby (Princess Piggy) from HSHV. I saw how well loved she was by all the staff there so it brings great sadness to share that she passed in the fall of 2025. After her adoption she struggled a little to adapt to having cat siblings in the house, but fortunately we were able to find her a loving home with a man who took wonderful care of her and even adopted a baby sister for her named Lola. He renamed her Baby after adopting her and she had the most wonderful life with him, staying right

Ethel – Worth the Wait

I first met Ethel in February 2025, shortly after she arrived at HSHV. I volunteer in an area where dogs sometimes are a little more anxious and need to be away from the public. She and I hit it off from our first walk. My wife and I had an older dog who we knew was at his end of life, so there was no way we could bring home another dog. After Artie passed in May, I started to look more at Ethel as a potential addition to our home. Fortunately for us, she lasted until August when we

A forever home for Lando

When my best fur friend of 12 years, Dakota, (HSHV alumni) crossed the rainbow bridge in early November 2024…my heart shattered. As a volunteer dog walker at HSHV, I found myself spending more and more time at the shelter with the dogs. In April 2025 a handsome, senior dog named Lando came to the shelter. Right away I felt a connection to him. I walked him daily at the shelter, then I took him home for shelter breaks, finally realizing he’s the one, and I adopted Lando on May 8, 2025. We celebrated Lando’s 12th Birthday in August. We spent
