Love at First Sight

When my dog Tank was about 1 1/2 we lost our older dog Remy. Tank grieved a lot longer and worse than we ever could have imagined. Tank stopped eating, his allergies couldn’t be controlled and he was just so sick all the time, so I thought I’ll go to HSHV and see if they have any dogs who would be a good match. I was worried because Tank got along with my 2 daughters’ dogs but not enough, so I was worried Tank would get worse due to jealousy. I looked at a couple of the dogs, but when

The Best Dog Around!

I adopted Molly on September 2nd 2021, and it was easily one of the best days of my life. Molly had only been at HSHV for six days when my mom and I showed up to look for an ESA (emotional support animal) to help me with my depression and anxiety. Molly was laying down in the last kennel in the hallway, looking up at us with her beady little eyes. She pawed at me through the kennel door and I knew she was the one. I was able to take her back to the dorms with me and she

Kitties get their forever home

Almost 2 years ago, my husband and I decided we wanted to bring a kitten into our home; we already had two loving dogs. We went to HSHV and did not make it much past the front desk before we met a kitten I knew would get her forever home that day. So starts the story of Persephone, Eris, and Pugsley. Persephone was an abandoned kitten who was left in a box with her mom when some kind soul found them and brought them to the shelter. Eris and Pugsley were fortunate not to have had a traumatic experience prior

Bear’s (Corn Fritter’s) Forever Home

It is hard to believe it has only been two weeks since we adopted Bear (aka Corn Fritter). He settled into our home immediately and started sleeping in bed with me his first night home. Bear is very friendly and loves to be around “his” people. He comes running to the door when I get home from work and greets me with a chirp. We all love him and are glad he is now a part of our family! Corn-fritter now Bear

Stevie’s doing great!!

I visited HSHV with my mom without the intention of finding a kitty of my own. I was visiting with some cats in a different room from my mom when she came and told me I had to come see this cat (Stevie) right away. The moment I saw Stevie, I instantly started crying. His markings resembled my childhood cat that had passed about a year prior and I was still having a difficult time coping with that loss. However, it wasn’t only the resemblance that drew me to him. I instantly felt a connection and knew I had to

Dally is in his forever home!

We adopted Dally a couple of months ago. He was owner surrendered due to aggressive behavior. It turns out, he is all bark and no bite. He is just very protective of those he loves. His number one job is patrolling our fence line to make sure no danger is lurking. He takes this job very seriosly, alerting us to the slightest commotion, noise, the wind blowing… 😄 He has settled in nicely, loves his brother Georgie and his new sister, Rue. He likes my husband but loves me fiercely. We all adore him and are happy he’s home!! Thank

Suki is doing great!

I went into HSHV knowing I wanted to adopt an older cat, and when I met Suki I knew she was the perfect kitty companion for me! (I may have sobbed at the front desk when I brought her adoption card up). When I brought her home, she immediately started strutting around the house, meowing at everything, and even joined me on the couch for some cuddles on our first day together! It’s been a few days now and Suki has really made herself at home. She loves to sleep in bed with me at night and we have lots

Two shy girls found their furever home

I recently went through big changes in life and found myself living alone and feeling very lonely. I went to the Humane Society to look for a bonded pair, and I found these two girls. They are wonderful. They were very shy at first, every sound and movement scared them. They used to growl any time the neighbors opened their doors. But now, a month later, they are so happy and comfortable. They make cuddle piles all over the place, and they have favorite spots and blankets now. If I don’t cuddle them for at least half an hour every
