After a year of searching we found our best friend

My husband and I would go to HSHV every weekend looking for our first dog together. We met so many sweet babies but they never were the right fit. After a year of searching we met Coco. She had come from Alabama on the Love Train a few days before. She was one of the only adult dogs on the train that week. I couldn’t believe she hadn’t been adopted yet. Looking down into the kennel at her in the puppy room, she looked back up at us with these huge brown eyes. We could tell she had been through

Senior kitty with so much to give

At the height of Covid in March, we found ourselves without a cat in the house for the first time in my entire life. My husband and I decided to just go get a cat. We didn’t have an idea in mind of what we wanted. But we wanted a cat who would blend with our dogs. We got that and more from the lovely 12 yr old tortie named KitKat (Now Freya). She adores our dogs and attention from humans. She will eat literally anything, and loves to sleep under the covers with us at night. She is the

Thank you for our sweet girl!!

My boyfriend and I came to HSHV in September to look for a cat to welcome into our home. I’ve always wanted a tortoiseshell cat and my boyfriend wanted a fluffy cat – so of course we immediately fell in love with Poppy, a sweet long-hair, tortie diva. It took her a week or so of finding all the hiding spots in the house and getting a feel for our life at home before she started to come out of her shy shell. Now a couple of months later, you can find her running zoomie laps, taking cozy naps on

A Senior Pit’s Forever Home

While living in Denver, my husband and I volunteered at a shelter and saw first-hand how much longer it took for senior dogs and pitbulls to be adopted. As renters, we were unable to add another dog to our family, and until recently pitbulls were banned in Denver. But we knew that once we moved back to Ann Arbor we would rescue, ideally a senior and a pit. Summer 2019 we made the move, and went through dog walking training at HSHV. As the year went on, I became more serious in my search for an addition, and in November,

Piper: Our Best Friend

Originally I was looking for a cat a little older to be a companion. I was concerned about having a kitten when moving back to school and working, but it just had to happen. My boyfriend and I were at Tiny Lions the day she was brought in. She had just been fixed and was very mellow, hiding in a box, in a crate, in a corner. I went over to see her, reached out my hand, and she dropped her whole body into it. The second she did that I knew she was mine. My boyfriend looked at me

Best Addition Ever!

We knew we wanted Lunchbox right away, once we saw his adorable video online. Since bringing him home in August, he has really come into his own. We love watching him gently saunter through the house, and he takes the cutest naps ever. This guy is one-of-a-kind and we are so glad he has chosen our home for his own.

Our Saving Grace- Phoebe!

Growing up, my family adopted all of our pets from HSHV. My Fiancé and I just bought a house with a little one on the way. We lost our pregnancy and were heartbroken, as well as in a home with no one but ourselves. We decided to go look at the Love Train puppies. We waited hours for our turn, but it was so worth it! We had our eye on a few and asked to visit a little German Shepard/Husky puppy that was sitting all alone in the back of her crate. Upon visiting with her, it quickly became

An Unlikely Pair

I adopted Warren, the big gray kitty (previously known as Ziggy) in 2017. I was looking for a cat and was hoping to find an older one who would be a little tougher to adopt out. When I entered the communal cat room he immediately came up and sat next to me. The entire time I was in the room he purred continuously. I wandered around the shelter some more, but I knew he was the one. He’s roughly about 13 years old now and developed some health issues along the way, but he is living his best life now.
