Ava becomes Lady Marmalade

My husband and I said goodbye to his sweet, 17 year-old cat Peaches and we felt a definite hole in our hearts. We go to the shelter often to visit the animals, and waited months for our perfect old lady. When we saw Ava’s (now Marmalade) picture on the site, we knew we had to have her. The next day, we went in and fell in love and brought her home that day. We were notified of Marmalade’s health issues, poor vision, no teeth, and lesser kidney functions. We took her to our vet and have been giving her subcutaneous

Senior to Senior

As a HSHV volunteer I would periodically visit the animals. That is when I met Donut. He had been at HSHV for a long time and was 12 years old with early stage kidney disease. My husband and I decided to adopt him (Sept 2019) and give him an enjoyable life for what ever time he had left. We are approaching our one year anniversary with Donut. He is so sweet and is always at our side waiting for us to sit down on our lap. This dear senior cat continues to provide lots of love to us seniors. ❤️

Henrietta’s New Oasis

Our family has always had a love for amphibians. We recently built an outdoor pond area and were looking for the perfect turtle to rescue as we know so many outgrow their small spaces in tanks. She’s now living her best life in a 150 gallon pond with lots of space to explore. She really loves her new basking spot. We are already in the works to recreate this space in our basement for the winter months.

Got a great dog and wonderful friends

I rescued Carina August 2017 while living in Ann Arbor. I also met her foster and volunteer at HSHV, Tom, that day. Since then not only have I had an incredible dog by my side but Tom and I have become good friends. He and his wife and dogsat Carina a number of times and have hosted me overnight when our flight was canceled. Since the adoption, Carina and I have traveled across North America, living in New York, Vancouver and Mexico. She travels so well and everywhere she goes she breaks hearts. Every day people stop me to tell

The Beagle nobody wanted

Poor “Sammy” had a tough first year. In 2009, at 3 months old, a man with 2 tearful kids brought him to HSHV as a “stray.” Soon after he was adopted, but returned 2 weeks later because he was “too rough on the Lab at home and dug moon craters in his yard.” His third family included 2 small kids and a newborn – he was adopted just before closing and was back waiting at the shelter door when they opened the next morning, because he was too much to handle. This little boy had been rejected three times by

Philo finds his home with me!

I adopted Sailor AKA Philo in June of 2020. I have to say he is the perfect kitten! He is a talker, so lovable, he loves to knead and suckle on my blanket at night. He is funny, confident, and a brave little boy. Needless to say he has stolen my heart. He adapted so easily to his new home. I kept him seperated from the other animals for just a few days, and he was ready to meet the rest of his new fur siblings! Easiest introduction I have ever done. Thank you for all you do for the

Runner keeps on running!

I went to HSHV looking for an energetic and outgoing dog, and I found just that in my Pitbull/Boxer mix named Runner! He’s an amazing, lovable, and certainly energetic doggo who loves being by my side at any and every moment. I couldn’t be happier with him, and thanks to the simple and efficient adoption process offered by HSHV, I’ve now got a new best friend.

We gave him exactly 15 loving years

We adopted “King” on July 15, 2007. We had just lost our previous cat to old age and wanted another buddy for our one cat. We took our two girls to pick out another baby ,and we got King (known as Beckham now). We miss him so but we will be adding another feline to our family very soon! HSHV is the one of the best places we adopt 🥰 ❤ King now Beckham

The puppy who had heart surgery

I remember the day as a 17 year old, when I was in my study hall at school and looking at HSHV’s website. My chocolate lab had passed away a few days before Christmas. I was just looking because my family loves animals. I saw Gabby (Ellie) and fell in love, and I called my parents that second while I was in class. Once I’d begged my parents, I called HSHV. Gabby had a long list of people waiting to meet her. She’d had heart surgery just a few weeks prior. I finally got the call because people were too

Unexpected Adoption

Our family had decided to look for a friend for our boxer, Bella. We had just happened to walk into HSHV (not thinking we were even going to be adopting anytime soon) and came across a litter of puppies that had just been rescued. “Ford” was the chubbiest puppy with the biggest belly and as soon as we saw him we fell in love. We instantly knew he was the one to make our family complete. “Ford” now renamed “Buddy” is an 80 pound boy full of love and cuddles. His favorite hobbies include eating, chewing on sticks, sprawling out
