Lucy opens up with us!
Lucy (now Jiji) was surrendered to HSHV because she didn’t fit well with her previous family’s situation. When I saw her on the website, I really wanted to meet her. Once we went to HSHV we asked for her and found her in a kitty condo sleeping. She was very thin and tiny and didn’t seem very happy, but was purring when we pet her. She did swat at us, but I still knew I wanted her to come home with us. We were warned that due to past indicated behaviors she likely wouldn’t ever really want to cuddle or

Say Say is The Best Dog Ever
We adopted Say Say (Sadie) after abruptly losing our dog of 13 years. Sadie was listed as a senior even though she didn’t act like one. As soon as she put her little feet under the cage, I just fell in love. Someone must have loved her at one point. She knew all typical commands and was nothing but polite. Three years later, and I have no idea what we would do without our sweet baby. Luckily our vet thought she might have been around 6 when we adopted her instead of 9. She loves the snow, hates water and

New name, same Meow
I adopted this cat last August, when she was named Meow. I renamed her Jasnah, but she is just as vocal as ever! I left her home with a cat sitter for a few days at Thanksgiving, and when I came back I could hear her meowing for me through the door. Last year, she was so happy to get out of the shelter. She walked around my whole apartment within hours of opening the carrier. Nowadays she’s enjoying her life as a single cat in a quiet apartment with lots of toys and attention. Thanks to HSHV for bringing

Blood doesn’t make a brother, love does
I adopted Jack (formally Gad) in July of 2017. Previously, I had never owned a cat. But good news: Jack had never been anyone’s cat before, so we figured everything out together. I was told he was brought in as a stray, no mom, no siblings. He was considered a cautious kitten and need a little extra time to adjust. Jack learned to enjoy going for walks on his leash, make new friends with the neighbor dogs, and travel to relatives’ houses for the holidays. After a move to a new home, it felt like something was missing. At the

Molly and Emmie, sisters from different misters
When Our 13 year old Yoshi died from cancer ,we were so heartbroken that it took another year for us to look again. We went to HSHV to look at puppies from the Puppy Train (a.k.a., Love Train). Instead of a puppy, we found River (now Molly). We decided to walk her, and before we took five steps we knew she was the one. We all were floored by how much she resembled our Yoshi and we were more shocked to see that on her paperwork her estimated birthday was the day that Yoshi passed away. It was like she

Daughter Wore Us Down
Our daughter has asked for a dog since she could talk. She has had fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, and hermit crabs, but we did not want a dog due to my husband’s dog allergy. Every Christmas and birthday, “dog” was at the top of her list. She walked other people’s dogs to be near them, visited pet stores and played with dogs, and would go on rescue sites daily. When the TV is on, there is a dog show on such as Pitbulls and Parolees. Well a week ago, on a whim, I told her we could visit a dog
