Third Time’s the Charm

Raleigh ( a 6 year-old American Bulldog/Pit mix) was surrendered to HSHV through no fault of her own, but due to unfortunate situations in her people’s lives. We lost our much-loved 16 year-old boxer mix Zoe over a year ago, and weren’t sure we could ever love a dog that much again. Finally we were ready to start looking, having no travel plans for the next several months. Raleigh popped up on the website just as we were finishing our last trip. Luckily, she was still there when we got back. It has been 6 weeks now, and Raleigh is

Toast’s Adoption

I found a very frail and dirty cat walking around in the rain outside my apartment complex one night – I assumed he belonged to someone in the complex, so I made him a dry place to stay outside on the patio with food and water. One day passed and he was still there, begging for attention from literally anyone that would walk by. It was heartbreaking to see people shoo him off like an annoying nuisance. I made the decision to take him in to a vet in the area to see if he had a chip – and

Pancake’s Story

Just under 2 years ago I stopped at HSHV – we were thinking about adopting a second cat. We walked past a room and I saw this little terrified cat that appeared to be a ragdoll. I fell in love instantly – we asked if we could see her, but we couldn’t because the situation was under investigation. This group of cats were seized from an exotic hoarder and weren’t cleared for adoption yet. We went back probably a total of 10 times over a month to wait for her to be cleared for adoption – then that day finally

Harley finds the perfect home

We adopted Harley as a puppy off the Love Train in 2016. She has a very sassy, loving, and energetic personality, and she definitely runs our household from her throne…the couch! She loves walks, chasing squirrels, and chewing bones! She added so much love and energy to our house, where we have another older dog and 2 cats. She unexpectedly ruptured a disc in her spine in 2019 which led to paralysis of her back legs before it was diagnosed (a period of 24 hours, so very quickly!). We promptly took her to a neurologist who recommended surgery with a

Rainee travels to the last frontier

I adopted Rainee almost 10 years ago from HSHV while I was living in Ann Arbor. Now, we’ve been in Interior, Alaska for the past 5 and she’s living her best, retired life. She is a constant in my life, and I couldn’t imagine a life without her. She will be 13 this summer, but she’s still got it. She spends her winters mostly indoors, napping by the heater, and summers outdoors with myself, my partner and our 2 year old Red Heeler, Maximus, camping, swimming, fishing and hiking. We love her so much! XOXO Rainee now Rainee

Terrific Toys

William is awesome! He loves animals and wanted to ensure that our animal residents were happy! So, he worked with friends to make some terrific dog toys. William also went above and beyond to collect donations from his friends and family. In addition to his handmade toys, William donated blankets, towels, food, pans, and funds to HSHV! We are so grateful for William’s compassion and generosity. Thank you so much, William!

Our Ray of Sunshine

We originally adopted our Charlie from your facility. He was such a love, and brought us so much joy! Unfortunately Charlie had underlying congestive heart failure, and passed away at 2 years young. We were absolutely devastated, but also incredibly thankful to have the time with him that we did. 2 months later, we found our Lola. She is a Maine Coon and HSHV rescued her from an exotic breed hoarder. She was the most frightened, skinny, matted new momma. After a few months she started coming out of her shell, and today she is the sassiest, most lovable and
