The Best Miscalculation

We adopted our beloved Alba in 2015. She was rescued from a hoarding situation and was an anxious but endlessly sweet dog from day one. We were told that she was 2 years old, and her youth factored into our decision to adopt. We wanted a young dog who would be with us for many, many years. Alba settled into the family perfectly. She loved walks and had the adorable habit of climbing onto the kids’ piled up blankets or stuffed animals when she wanted to nap. When Alba was about six, she developed some minor health problems and

Incredible Ian

Ian is a very kind kid! He loves animals and the youth programs HSHV offers, such as Sensory Story Time. Ian wanted to help HSHV, so he collected bottles and cans to return along with monetary donations as part of a class project. Then, Ian donated the funds he raised through donations and bottle returns to HSHV. Thank you, Ian! We are so grateful for your kindness and thoughtfulness, and we know the animals are too!

Life is better with 2 kitty buddies

Calista & Mary now Layah & Winnie I adopted Winnie (tuxedo cat, formerly Mary) in early December. After I saw her playing with her reflection every day, I knew she needed a buddy and a friend. Back to Tiny Lions Café I went in January, seeking that friend. I adopted Layah (black cat, formerly Calista) who is one month older than Winnie. It took a few weeks, but now they are very comfortable together as you can see in the photo. They keep each other busy with daily play-wrestling matches and window watching. And house exploring. And lounging. Who knew

Luna experiences life with us

“George’s Girlfriend” now Luna It was the winter of 2017 and I was a college student in need of emotional support. I saw Luna (“George’s Girlfriend” at the time) on HSHV’s site. She had only been in the shelter for a few days, but she was 6 years old and shy, so I knew she wouldn’t get scooped up as quickly as a kitten would. I went to adopt her the same day I saw her picture, because I knew she was mine! When she saw me, she crawled out from the back of the kennel and came right onto

Ann Arbor, MI (February 17, 2022) — Ann Arbor, MI (February 18, 2022) — Thanks to donations by concerned individuals, the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) is offering up to $500 cash reward for information leading to the prosecution of the person(s) responsible for the dead dog found in a cage frozen to the ground near Ypsilanti’s Village Grove Apartments on Sunday. Pets in Cold Weather

When temperatures drop, of course you’ll want to keep your pets inside as much as possible– to keep them safe and warm. Just like us, our pets are vulnerable to frostbite and hypothermia, especially in places on their bodies where they have no fur. And also just like people, our elderly and very young pets are the most vulnerable! Here are some additional tips:   Wipe those bellies and paws. Salt, antifreeze, and other ice-melting chemicals can get on their undersides and feet; be sure to wipe it off before they have a chance to lick it off and make

Kind Classrooms

Heritage 5th Graders are so kind! The students researched different dog breeds for a school writing project. Afterwards, they celebrated their writing by asking the community for donations to HSHV because they believe giving back to the community is important. The 5th graders collected food, blankets, towels, and toys for dogs and cats. Then, they donated their items to HSHV. Thank you, Heritage 5th Graders! We appreciate your kindness, and we know the animals do too!

Community Cats and Property Management

The relationship between community cat colony caretakers and commercial residential complexes (in particular, apartments, condos and trailer parks) can be difficult if not managed properly. The managers of community residences are in a tough situation – they get heat from people who don’t like having cats around, but they also know that upsetting colony caretakers can create angry residents and bad press for themselves. One of the most important things to keep in mind is that it helps significantly to keep community colonies “out of site and out of mind.” The less obvious your colony is, the easier it is

A Tale of a Healed Tail

Stella now StellaLuna de La Peiu Peiu I had often frequented Tiny Lions Cat Cafe and would see wonderful kitties, but none caught my attention like Miss Stella. On meeting her, she did a purry figure 8 around my legs as if to say “you will do.” A few days later I visited to be sure, and we had a couch moment. She had hidden behind one of the couches, I pulled the back of the seat back far enough to see her and yet still let her be in the dark. I whispered that she would soon not have
