Amazing Annika

Annika is one kind kid! Annika celebrated her birthday at HSHV and wanted to to give back to the animals for her special day. To do this, she asked for donations to the shelter in lieu of gifts for her birthday. She helped to donate towels and other items that are important for keeping our animals safe and comfortable. She also helped to fundraise for Walk and Wag as well! Thank you so much for your incredible kindness, Annika! We all wish you a very happy birthday, and the animals do as well!

Birthday Boy!

Puddles now Boogie I adopted Boogie in November 2021. On April 22, 2022, Boogie turned 2! The reign of the terrible twos begins! He was celebrated all weekend, receiving lots of love, gifts, snacks, and snuggles from his family. Of course, half of the fun was just playing in the box that his presents came in! Boogie has been enjoying life since I adopted him back in November. He travelled with me all the way from Michigan to Houston, Texas, where I am spending the semester working at an internship for school. His hobbies include helping me prepare and

How to talk with children about pet loss

Wording is often a real challenge. Here are some prompts that may help you plan what to say to your children and/or children in your life. Remember that there are rarely “the right words” and that planning ahead, though difficult, may help you feel more prepared to discuss pet loss. On explaining death: “His/her body stopped working” or “his/her heart stopped working” and that means that he/she is dead and won’t ever wake up. For very young children: When a pet dies it means they stop moving, they don’t see or hear us, they don’t wake up again. On talking

Our Amazing Girl

Gamma, now G Money Sparkles We adopted G (for short) in September 2021. When we adopted her HSHV said she had a heart murmur, and so many people loved her but no one wanted the responsibility. But when we brought her to a vet, they said she doesn’t have a heart murmur and she was so scared and shaking that it only sounded like one. Now April 2022, she is a perfectly amazing dog and I couldn’t have asked for better.

Piper Finds a New Home from the Love Train!

Bat now Piper My family wanted to adopt a new puppy, because my other dog was battling cancer and we knew her time was coming 🙁 We adopted piper a day after we put our other dog down. KONADOG! – The Missing 5th Child

We adopted our 5th (and only fur) child in January. She had been returned multiple times to HSHV due to her reactive nature/anxiousness/separate anxiety issues. She is loving and gentle, and although she is still reactive, she has greatly improved with a little time, effort, understanding and love. Most importantly, she is so wonderful and tolerant of our son who has ASD. It’s like she just knows he is different and even if he annoys her, she’s very patient and kind with him. It truly is heart warming. We love her so very much. She is not just our “dog”-

The Tiny Cat With Many Names

The moment I first saw pictures of this tiny gremlin, my heart was completely won over. She was a tad under 2lbs and choc full of personality and spunk. Cheese (aka Bubby, Bubbins, Bubberino, Mary Bubbins, BubBub, Bubbedy Bub, Baby Cat, Bubby Cut, Bubberly, Bubberino Flash, etc.) loves to talk to everyone, watch the birds and squirrels from her cat tree, and roll on dirty floors. She enjoys playing with her favorite toys called “string-string”, “bun bun”, and “squidly”, can’t get enough of toilet paper and paper towel rolls, will drop everything for salmon treats, relishes in snuggles and belly

Caring Classroom

Ms. Scheurer’s first grade class at Beacon Elementary is full of kind kids! After participating in a virtual field trip with HSHV, this first grade class was inspired to give back to the animals. They worked hard to make persuasive commercials to convince others at their school to donate items. Their commercials helped to donate a large assortment of great items for the shelter, such as food, toys, towels, blankets, and litter. Thank you so much to Ms. Scheurer’s first grade class for your kindness and creativity. We appreciate you and all of your hard work, and the animals do

A New Companion

Tippy now Reese Peanut Butter Cat It was the fall of 2020. Besides the pandemic, many things were not well. Isolation was really taking its toll and I had been thinking about getting a cat. But it seemed tough to get in somewhere to even look at cats. A friend told me HSHV you could just walk in. So I went after work, and Tippy was super excited to see me. Although I had originally planned on getting an older cat, she was so excited. How could I say no? She was 8lbs and would barely eat, but once
