I adopted Baby on a whim while at the HSHV during a difficult period of my life. I was only 19 and studying at the University of Michigan. In 2020 we lost our beloved cat Bublik. Bublik was abandoned at a gas station back in 2016 (not in the U.S.). I had been wanting to adopt another dog a few months after adopting our first boy from HSHV, but my boyfriend and I agreed we’d wait 2 years before doing so…unless by some far-fetched chance a dog came through who looked identical to our current dog, Benji. My boyfriend and I had been talking about getting a dog for a while, so one day we decided to go to HSHV to visit with the animals. I was specifically looking for long haired, fluffy, medium sized, female dog… and then we saw Benji (formerly Sudo)! We adopted Ruse from HSHV in December 2019 after losing our cat Ginny (also adopted from HSHV) to acute kidney disease in November. Ruse was right at home very quickly and the perfect addition to our home. In February 2020, I saw Mari pop up on HSHV’s page, and her story made me so sad. She had lived in a shelter for 7 years – her entire life – and had just been moved to HSHV in hopes that she would be adopted. Our son was 7 at the time, so I kept saying “Seven years! Jack came to our family from HSHV in 2013, as an energetic puppy. He had endured 4 previous adoption failures (not through HSHV). Over the years, our family has flourished with him in it. We recently celebrated Long’s 1st birthday! That marks over 8 months of having the best cat in the world. He’s absolutely blossomed into a lovely and affectionate cat from a rambunctious kitten, even if his paws didn’t really grow with him! Here’s to many more years with my best furry friend 🙂
