First, the setup to put it in perspective. Our eldest daughter, single mother, was one of the early casualties of the recession in the mid 2000’s. She and our grandson, age 10, moved back in with us. We repeatedly heard “I want a puppy.” Our neighbor across the road bred Golden Retrievers. They had a litter. I kept telling our grandson that having a dog came with a lot of responsibility. Who would clean up after? Who would give him food and water? Who would teach him how to be a good housemate? To make a long story short, we

Adopted cat Kairi helps bring home missing older sister
In November of 2017, my world was turned upside down. My sweet 6-month-old kitty, Gibson, was missing. My boyfriend and I spent hours every single day searching for our precious missing baby. I cried myself to sleep night after night, wondering where my girl was and why she hadn’t come back to me. In January of 2018, Gibson was still missing. My boyfriend got this idea of going to HSHV “just to look.” I was working until approximately 3 p.m. that day and had received a text from my boyfriend to meet him at HSHV. I told myself the whole

One Year of Magic
On March 17, 2018, my husband tricked me into visiting the Humane Society of Huron Valley. He lured me in by saying we would go, take a stroll through and purchase a toy for our dog at home. Upon taking our stroll, I laid eyes on Thunder Lizard, a 4-month-old Australian Shepard mix (we later determined that he is not an Australian Shepard but more of a Brittany Spaniel mix). I immediately fell in love (how could you not). My husband saw me losing my mind over this dog and suggested we meet with him. The picture shown is my

He found us
My daughter and I came to HSHV to look at a kitten that we saw on the HSHV website; we had decided that we wanted to get a short-haired kitten. We walked around the different cat rooms and found the cat we came to visit. While we were waiting to visit with the kitten, we saw a cat who hadn’t been named yet, who was meowing and sticking his paw out of the cage door. We went over to say hi and instantly fell in love! He was an adult, very long-haired cat… not at all what we thought we

Little sister Luna
One year ago, my husband and I went to HSHV to “just look” at the puppies who came off the Love Train. That’s when we saw “Aeries” a.k.a., Luna. We immediately fell in love with her “baby blues” and could not resist. We brought her home where her big fur brother, Stitch, was eagerly waiting. Long story short, he was not very fond of the bouncing puppy. She even has a small scar to prove it. We told ourselves that we would give it 2 weeks, and if it still didn’t work out, we would have to face the unfortunate.

The Lucky One
On St. Patrick’s Day three years ago (3/17/16), my boyfriend and I came in to just look around. We had no idea a Love Train had just come through. I was determined to find a dog. He, on the other hand, wasn’t sure if he were ready to adopt. Then, needless to say, we both saw Bosco (formally Major), and our hearts melted. We took him out into a private pen, and he was all about snuggles. Its been 3 years now, and he is the sweetest, most loyal, and smartest dog I’ve ever met. I’m pretty biased though. He

Bowser helped mend our family’s broken hearts
Our story begins a little sad. We lost 2 of our 3 dogs, within a month of each other. One very suddenly with no real reason why, and the other due to old age. We didn’t feel ready for another pup yet, but decided to go see the Love Train one Friday evening, thinking all the puppies would be adopted, but we would get a feel for what to expect and ask all the questions so we would be prepared for the next Love Train. We got there and were directed back to the puppies, to find out there were

He asked, “Are you SURE you want a puppy again”
We were his second family having been a surrendered the day before we came in that fateful Valentine’s Day. He was the quiet one, lying on his bed chewing one of his toys. No, we weren’t his previous family coming back to get him, but we were the ones taking him home. Fred, his older dog brother taught him to be a good dog, and his kitty siblings taught him how to play nicely and to be gentle, and our whole family taught him how to be the best dog we’ve had yet! He brings joy to us every day

Well-traveled Pup Retires in Southern Florida
My husband and I adopted Frank on Black Friday in 2014. (Black cats were on sale that day, but we ended up with a dog!) He originally had been brought in as a stray. He was adopted by another family before us, but returned after a year. He had been back in the shelter a few weeks, and he wasn’t doing very well – he had rubbed the skin off the top of his nose. Frank is the most loving, loyal dog in the entire world. He has to be touching or looking at us at all times. His absolute

Pupdate on Bambi!
My boyfriend and I came into HSHV to look for a dog to adopt with no intention of falling in love with Bambi, but from the moment we saw her, we knew she was ours! She was a Love Train puppy who had been adopted and returned. Her name is Frankie now (a.k.a., Li’l chicken nugget, li’l boo, Frankie Pankie Poo), and she has the biggest personality as you can see from the picture. She’s so relaxed and funny; we really couldn’t imagine our lives without her! Bambi now Frankie
