We found our best friend

Maisy drew us in right away. She welcomed our attention so she seemed like a good fit for the kitty we already had who was in need of a best friend. She was estimated to be 3 years old, but we weren’t so sure because of her small size. We took her home and it’s safe to say she grew.

From Skittles to my Mia Bug

My boyfriend at the time knew I was really wanting a to adopt a kitten. So one day, we went to HSHV to check out what they had. I originally was looking for a white cat, but then my boyfriend spotted Mia. When he handed her to me I said, “My heart just melted,” and I knew I was taking her home. I’ve had her 5 years in June and I can’t imagine life without my Mia Bug.   Skittles now Mia

Happy Hammy!

During the Polar Vortex, I could not get my mind off adopting a dog. Thinking about a poor dog shivering in the cold just didn’t sit well with my mind. So, the day where it snowed about an inch an hour (& school was closed!) we put on our boots and hats and made the 45 minute drive in the snow to the Humane Society of Huron Valley. My boyfriend and I looked up and down the halls and both immediately fell in love with Max. He sat on command and killed us with his beautiful eyes! Within an hour,

Milo and Otis become the cuddliest brothers!

When I walked into the kitten room, Milo (then Linus) jumped onto the bars of the crate, and I knew he was coming home with me. Otis (then Reedus) was a bit more shy, but I thought Milo could pull him out of his shell. Boy, was I right. Now, they are two brothers who wrestle and cuddle all the time and just had their first birthday! Milo has never met a person he doesn’t like (he even tries to help the maintenance man!), and Otis is afraid of basically everything. But together, Milo helps Otis overcome his fears and

The Happiest Dog Ever

We adopted Pepper about a year ago. We already had two dogs we loved, but there was a slight mismatch in their energy level. Pepper came in and was super playful with our younger dog and super sweet and reassuring with our older, more nervous guy. Plus, she is the happiest dog ever! Honestly, her little tail is so waggy, and she is just excited about everything! New toys, dog biscuits, a squirrel on the porch, a chance to sniff a cat tail, a piece of cardboard to chew up, a walk, a dip in the river — Pepper is

Dottie’s Happy Ending!

My fiancé and I were looking for a low key, older dog, but we saw Dottie’s puppy picture on the Huron Valley website and fell in love! Dottie has pretty bad separation anxiety, but we are working with her and our trainer, and she’s becoming a happier and healthier puppy every day. We love her so much! She adores EVERYTHING! She wants to lick and play with every person and dog she meets. She loves our kitty, Penny, and Penny is getting used to her, too. Dottie has added so much love to our lives and we are excited to

Forever Friends

On our first wedding anniversary in October, we decided to get a friend for our cat Oliver. Oliver is a nine-year old slightly grumpy orange tabby, and spends his time alone during the day while we are at work. We thought he might like a friend to keep him company, and we were ready for another pet to love. We thought we wanted an older male cat, but the helpful volunteers at the Humane Society helped us realize that a kitten was the best fit for our family. We went home with Tippi that day! She was so tiny, just

Josie falls in love

Josephine was adopted by my mom, Tina Smith, months after her beloved husband and soulmate died. We were an animal family: cats, dogs, horses and the assortment of rodent-type pets. Josephine replaced a former version of herself who died from jaw cancer, causing heartbreak to my mom and her husband. So when 2013 became lonely, my mom was talked into going to the humane society with her granddaughter to pick out a cat. Josephine’s last 18 months had been in the shelter. She hit pay dirt with my mom, and I doubt it took her long to figure that out.

Love train puppy missing a foot

Patrick was brought in with the Love Train in March 2019. My husband and I have put off owning another dog…Casey, our first dog adopted from HSHV and lived 15 years. But we were sent a pic of Patrick and his disability and immediately my husband said, “YES!” He is now named Oliver and has adapted so well living with his 2 cat brothers Kramer and Bailey. Missing a foot has NOT hindered him in any way. He has play dates with Luka and Maxwell, his cousins, and keeps up with them with no problem. We are thankful that Oliver
