Whoever writes the Facebook posts for the HSHV should get a raise! 🙂 In October 2018, a post was put on facebook about Sydneny– a 15 year old “pit mix” who was surrendered by her owners, and had been at the shelter for 6 weeks. Her adorable face broke my heart, so our family decided to adopt her. After attending to some medical issues, Rosie is a totally new dog. It’s been a pleasure seeing her true personality come out! She loves to play, and bounces around the living room like a rabbit. She loves her family, and is especially

The Kirk Chronicles
My first experience with HSHV started long before Kirk joined our family – as a child with a debilitating fear of dogs, adopting a dog was never in the picture for me. Enter Abby, a sweet black lab/terrier mix whom my parents adopted from HSHV when I was in 5th grade as a gift to my brother and the final “push” to get me over my fear of dogs after successfully completing dog therapy (yes, such a thing does exist). Abby was the textbook definition of “the perfect dog” and, long story short, she turned a young girl who previously

Mocha Espresso Latte goes home
My husband and I always talked about getting a dog. We decided to put in an application and heard back the next day about coming and and looking for a dog. We came in to the humane society the next day to just look. We looked at all the dogs, and I saw this puppy that was sleeping and was like, “I want to see and hold her.” My husband went and asked one of the volunteers and she got Honey (the name given there) out for us and put us outside with her, and handed her to me while

My mellow Mallow
My fur baby and I found each other one Saturday two years ago at HSHV, in the kitten room. As soon as I saw him climbing all over the other sleeping kittens, begging to be played with, I knew he was special. He’s playful and outgoing, but also cuddly and sweet. I never thought I could love a cat so much, but here I am, with him lying on my feet, totally smitten with my best buddy. Goldfish now Marshmallow

Kennie’s bestfriend
Our son is 1 year, 9 months old. We have two dogs (not including Grizzley) who are 10 and 11. Though we are blessed to have them in our son’s life, unfortunately they won’t be there when he is an older boy with a friend… So we decided to add on to our family. We saw Chidi (now Grizzley), and we could see the desperate love in his eyes. We knew he was the one. Especially with the fact that he is so young, he is perfect for our little man. He has become more than just our son’s friend.

A hole in the heart Is filled
First, the setup to put it in perspective. Our eldest daughter, single mother, was one of the early casualties of the recession in the mid 2000’s. She and our grandson, age 10, moved back in with us. We repeatedly heard “I want a puppy.” Our neighbor across the road bred Golden Retrievers. They had a litter. I kept telling our grandson that having a dog came with a lot of responsibility. Who would clean up after? Who would give him food and water? Who would teach him how to be a good housemate? To make a long story short, we

Adopted cat Kairi helps bring home missing older sister
In November of 2017, my world was turned upside down. My sweet 6-month-old kitty, Gibson, was missing. My boyfriend and I spent hours every single day searching for our precious missing baby. I cried myself to sleep night after night, wondering where my girl was and why she hadn’t come back to me. In January of 2018, Gibson was still missing. My boyfriend got this idea of going to HSHV “just to look.” I was working until approximately 3 p.m. that day and had received a text from my boyfriend to meet him at HSHV. I told myself the whole

One Year of Magic
On March 17, 2018, my husband tricked me into visiting the Humane Society of Huron Valley. He lured me in by saying we would go, take a stroll through and purchase a toy for our dog at home. Upon taking our stroll, I laid eyes on Thunder Lizard, a 4-month-old Australian Shepard mix (we later determined that he is not an Australian Shepard but more of a Brittany Spaniel mix). I immediately fell in love (how could you not). My husband saw me losing my mind over this dog and suggested we meet with him. The picture shown is my

He found us
My daughter and I came to HSHV to look at a kitten that we saw on the HSHV website; we had decided that we wanted to get a short-haired kitten. We walked around the different cat rooms and found the cat we came to visit. While we were waiting to visit with the kitten, we saw a cat who hadn’t been named yet, who was meowing and sticking his paw out of the cage door. We went over to say hi and instantly fell in love! He was an adult, very long-haired cat… not at all what we thought we

Little sister Luna
One year ago, my husband and I went to HSHV to “just look” at the puppies who came off the Love Train. That’s when we saw “Aeries” a.k.a., Luna. We immediately fell in love with her “baby blues” and could not resist. We brought her home where her big fur brother, Stitch, was eagerly waiting. Long story short, he was not very fond of the bouncing puppy. She even has a small scar to prove it. We told ourselves that we would give it 2 weeks, and if it still didn’t work out, we would have to face the unfortunate.
