You can never ‘just look’ at HSHV

Four weeks ago, my boyfriend and I came to HSHV “just to look” at the dogs they had. As soon as we came up to his cage and saw Sam (then Lassen) for the first time, we fell in love. He came right up to us and rested his head in our hands. We took him for a walk and played with him for awhile before leaving, and then all night could not stop thinking about him! I was so sure he was going to get adopted by someone else before we were ready to take him later that week.

Oreo’s crazy Ideas

About four years ago, my family and I went to HSHV. When we went past the cat communal rooms, I saw a cat who made me stop walking and look into the window. The cat was bone-thin, all his ribs showing. According to his kennel card, he had just arrived at the shelter. He looked scared. My parents agreed to let me go in the room with him to see if he would be our new cat. It felt like forever when the HSHV staff opened the door. I walked over to the window seat. The cat came over, curious.

A hand full

I was looking around for a support dog. I stopped and chatted with Chloe, and then I went on my way. I looked at a couple of other dogs, and then I was walking back past Chloe when she let out this yowl like, “Wait!” I told the lady, “I’ll take ‘er!” and she’s been here ever since, with her two siblings– cats Henry and Nonna. She likes to chase them, so they basically stay in the room until they come out at night when they know she’s asleep. Chloe sleeps in my bed every night. She hogs the covers.

Tim Horton’s kitty comes home with his rescuers!

It was around 11 PM when I saw a white and grey cat in a Tim Horton’s parking lot while my friend was driving us home. I gasped, “Oh my god, that’s a cat!” My friend sighed. “Do you wanna stop?” After roughly two hours of talking to the cat, befriending them, feeding her, etc. we sent her home with my sighing friend for the night so we could bring her to HSHV the next day. Our sweet and fluffy friend stayed at HSHV for barely a week; she was dubbed Quigley, and we were all laughing about how she

Nick Furry says, “There’s a place here for you!”

It’s been over 20 years since I’ve had a kitten or a puppy, and as my daughter gets older and comes closer to finishing high school and going off to make her own way in the world, I decided it was time to open my heart again. After losing my 4 long time pets in the past 5 years, it was really difficult to even think about it. But this past summer, I house-sat for a family that had three cats and I found myself missing that companionship after my house sitting duties were done. So, I went to HSHV

Our missing piece

It’s hard to believe that we only adopted Otis (formerly Legs) only 6 weeks ago because he feels like he’s been part of our family for years! I know he was meant to be with us. I had begun searching for a partner to my other puppy because she had more energy than my older dog could keep up with, but I also had that nagging feeling in my heart that I needed another dog… You know, it’s like when you know you’re ready to have kids and you find yourself so anxiously, impatiently waiting! For me, it has been

Rosie’s One Year!

It has been a full 365 days since we adopted our sweet Tiny Lion Rosie and we could not be happier. She is the sweetest, cuddliest, most loving ball of fluff we could have ever imagined and then some. Since she came home one year ago, Rosie has celebrated two human birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, a human graduation, and a move to a bigger, more kitty-friendly apartment. She has also gained one pound, putting her at a whopping nine! (She swears it’s not because of the kitty treats.) Rosie has been purring non stop since she came home (with

Happy Scrappy

When I saw this girl she looked so sad and lost. Well, I was sad and lost because I had just a month earlier had to put my fur baby down. I cried every day, didn’t do much, and was really depressed. I brought Kyla (Formerly Scrappy) home, and and she has been a challenge but in a good way. She keeps me busy because she loves belly rubs and going for walks and playing ball and cuddling. I love this baby so much. She doesn’t get along with my other dog all the time so she has taught me

Once shot, now loved

My dog came on the Love Train from Kentucky. After we adopted him, we found out that he had heartworm which we had him treated for. During the X-Ray portion of the treatment, we found out that he had previously been shot (shrapnel shown on X-Ray) in addition to a fractured ankle. We have had him for over a year now, and he has proven to be the best dog we have ever had! We are retired and have adopted many dogs in the past. This dog is so loving and obedient, that it brings tears to my eyes. I
