I adopted Roxy on 2/2/20. She is doing SO well! A few snippets: – Her walking has improved immensely. She topples over much less often but I’m still getting it looked at, to be safe. – She’s become more friendly with her fur siblings, the canine ones at least. I think she’s taken a particular liking to Benji (formerly Junior at HSHV). She is not fond of the cats and barks at them whenever she sees them. It’s a work in progress. – After several days of trying, I finally got her to take a Minty bone. She loves them

My best friend in the whole world
I went to the shelter to look at cats with my roommate 3 years ago, and Nebula caught my eye right away with her big blue eyes. As soon as I reached through the crate, she ran up to head-but my hand and started purring like an engine.

Levi Finally Finds His Forever!
Levi had a rough first year of life starting off as a Love Train puppy. He was brought back with minor injuries before his first birthday, and was adopted again right away only to be brought back shortly thereafter because he was so afraid he refused to eat and had lost at least 10 pounds. This is when we met “Teddy.” He was anxious, especially with my husband, but there was an instant connection between all of us. So on a rainy Saturday afternoon, we brought him to his new forever home. It has been a month now, and he

From Reactive To Rescuing Others
At the shelter, “Silas” was evaluated as needing to be the only pet in a home. As a pit bull mix, this made it even harder for him to get adopted. I’m so glad that the staff at Humane Society of Huron Valley were willing to consider my rescue experience and consider not just how he interacted with Ragnarok when we visited, but how I managed their interactions. It was far from a fairy tale meeting of dogs destined for brotherhood. They were growling, a little nippy, aggressive postures. By the end of the visit, the staff felt confident that

A senior ❤ story
Two years ago I went to HSHV to look at some puppies with a friend. My old dog had died months earlier, and I was beginning to think about a new one. In the last pen of the puppy area was a small, ragamuffin with a crooked underbite and a slightly off-center button nose. His name was Paploo, and he was a stray, estimated to be between 8-10 years old. As we were visiting, an employee told me about their senior-to-senior program. This fabulous program waives the adoption fee if a senior human adopts a senior pet. ❤ As luck

We found Joey…and we weren’t even looking
Late on the Friday before the Martin Luther King Day long weekend, I was scrolling through the HSHV app and saw the intake picture for 12-year-old Chloe. I am a volunteer at HSHV and have taken dogs for overnight shelter breaks in the past, so I texted my husband and told him we would likely be having a guest for the weekend. I went to pick Chloe up the next day, and for the first time in 18 months of volunteering, I burst into tears when I met a dog at the shelter. Chloe was huddled in the corner of

We found the best family cat ever!
We met Pete (a.k.a., Woodstock) on our second visit in January 2020 at HSHV. He is such a handsome boy, and we love his character even more. He needed only couple days to adjust with us. Now he loves to explore the house, cuddle with everybody (including our guests), bring the girls to bed, wake us up very early in the morning, sit in the window and watch squirrels. He is super friendly and has good manners. We are very happy we adopted Pete, the best family cat ever 😺 Woodstock now Herr Peterson (a.k.a., Pete)

He stole my heart
I can not even begin to describe how much I love Louie (a.k.a., Polar) My husband and I adopted him right before Christmas, and he has been the perfect fit into our family. He’s goofy and ohhhhh so loveable ❤ He runs crazy laps around our big back yard (LOL!). He is such a cuddle bug–ahem– and a bed hog 😂 I just want to say thank you for letting him come into his forever home and complete us. Polar now Louie

Sweet Sisters Live Happily Ever After
In 2015, I had been dreaming of adopting a kitten to add to our family. On Thanksgiving day, I was browsing the HSHV website and found a picture of 2 sweet sister kitties. They were all black fluff with gorgeous green eyes. I was hooked! The thing is that they were only offered as a “perfect pair” adoption because they were bonded and could not be separated. Not exactly what I was thinking, but the next day my husband and I went to visit the girls. I put my hand in the kennel, and Violet jumped off of her perch

Chevy – a high octane couch potato
In 2014, I had to say goodbye to one of my childhood dogs. I still had his brother, who by then was half blind, deaf, but had never been alone. He desperately needed a buddy. I came to HSHV looking to bring home a companion for him, and found Chevy. He was so wiggly and happy in his kennel; he shoved all the toys up against the fence, begging someone to take one and play with him. Chevy rejuvenated my older dog, and made the last years of his life some of his best. He’s a solo pup in the
